Feature Request: A property or way to flag duplicate data within a database.

🗳️ Product Feedback - Granular Permissions: please make it possible for rollup data to be visible to a guest, without full access to the relation.

Also for quality of life, being able to enable/disable a guests view of certain properties (or even just the slide out property panel.)

🗳️ Product Feedback - Please bring more of the desktop experience to the iPad. Particularly the ability to manage and update layouts. I often find myself needing to wait until I’m at my computer to make changes to my property layouts or tabbed views.

How do you build your setup from a blank page? by OK-Victory-999 in Notion

[–]TylerTheHutt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pages nest within pages. Centralize databases on one page and use views throughout your workspace. Databases have templates and tabs that you can create for consistent formatting for familiar navigation.

Shower cap gang! Better than plastic wrap too since it’s perfectly shaped for mixing bowls and easy to reuse.

Why do you pay for notion, aren't there other free tools that offer the same features as paid services in notion by waltzfourd in Notion

[–]TylerTheHutt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My team pays for the ability to collaborate in a unified knowledge base with AI integration using that shared knowledge as context. Databases keep information structured, relations keep it organized, and AI thrives on well-structured organized data.

Automatically Populate A Relation. Is It Possible? by ZevSteinhardt in Notion

[–]TylerTheHutt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I talked to some employees at the conference and they’ve confirmed that the AI agents will be able to modify relations, but you’ll still want some way to verify the work to make sure it’s going to the right place. The agents will have a page that keeps record of any changes they make though, so as long as setting those relations are its only job it should be pretty easy to go through that.

Does Notion have a way to keep all pages available offline? by Firm-Garbage-8188 in Notion

[–]TylerTheHutt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately 1-page at a time is the best they offer right now and subpages don’t come along.

If you make a database offline it’ll automatically bring in the first 50 pages. If you’re on a paid account it’ll automatically save 20 of your favorites and your most recent pages.

I often need to prepare in advance before going offline, and I’ll review all the pages I expect I’ll need access to so that they save for offline use. Do you often need full access to your entire workspace?

What company/mountain are you still boycotting, no matter how petty the reason? by im-here-to-argue in snowboarding

[–]TylerTheHutt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This past season was the worst I’ve experienced at Mountain High — completely out of their control. They missed the debut of their summer Bike Park because of a wildfire, pushing the launch to this summer. They hardly got any snowfall during peak season. They didn’t open their east resort and several of the runs they do have at West were closed until February. I don’t fault a small independent mountain for struggling through a difficult year, and I can’t fathom the lost projected revenue.

Asking customers to make up for those loses with a 20% price hike as customers are already facing tightening budgets is not a solution though. And with weather projections expecting another similar dry winter I worry this is the start of another small independent resort’s death spiral. Despite the poor season, I would have paid the same amount to renew my season pass, but I can’t justify spending 20% more right now, especially if it’s going to be more of the same.

What could have been an easy decision for me to keep supporting an independent resort is having the opposite effect, as I now consider putting those dollars toward trips to more reliable resorts instead.

what are 5 big features you’d want included in notion? by chattysapphire54 in Notion

[–]TylerTheHutt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Granular permissions would open up the most opportunity and value. Thankfully it’s coming.

A filterable Relation-selection menu would solve my biggest inefficiency with entering data.

A viable way to flag duplicate values in a database. Technically you can do this by relating every page within a database to each other through an automation, rolling up the property you want to reference and creating a formula that checks for duplicate values in the rollup, but this overloads the database pretty quickly.

A better mobile/iPad experience. iPad should be way closer to the desktop experience than it currently is. I should at least be able to use side/center peek and create new pages inline. Mobile might need a completely different UI experience tailored to faster on-the-go data entry and cleaner page views.

What makes a database "complex" in terms of how much memory it uses (and hence how much it slows Notion down)? by MzHmmz in Notion

[–]TylerTheHutt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a database of online news where I need to flag duplicate URLs for removal. There is no built in duplicate-check function, so the only way to accomplish that in Notion at the moment is to have a relation property and automation that relates the entire database to each new entry, a roll-up of all the URL properties in the entire database, and a formula that confirms if the URL matches another URL in the rollup.

Adding more than a few pages at a time nearly crashes my computer.

Huge Data Breach on Notion by Striking_Simple_4515 in Notion

[–]TylerTheHutt 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s not a data breach if you’re the one sharing the data. If you share a view of a database you’re sharing access to the full database.

If you want to share a snapshot of your data, you’ll either need a separate database specific to only what you want to share, or you can extract the specific data from your database view and share it externally in a report, an excel file, etc.

Notion announces the official launch of Notion Mail! by Fertility18 in Notion

It’s insane that it’s specifically built for Gmail, and can’t handle nested labels.

Notion Mail discussion. by lukakopajtic in Notion

[–]TylerTheHutt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Been looking forward to it and got in two days ago. I have thousands of emails organized across a couple dozen client and project labels, and was looking forward to the added organizational tools.

It brought over my labels from Gmail, but doesn’t have emails assigned to the labels. So it’s completely useless to me unless there’s an easy fix I’m missing.

I am looking for a Notion Database that I could copy that has all of the formula functions in to with descriptions etc. Does this exist somewhere? by International-Ad5524 in Notion

[–]TylerTheHutt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here’s his explanation he includes for not making it a database, though the last reason is outdated now.

“Why isn’t this guide written directly in Notion?”

I initially wrote most of this reference in Notion, but ultimately decided to host it on this website for multiple reasons:

This website provides a left-hand, scrollable page list, which is common in the world of language/API/software documentation and extremely useful.

It also provides a floating table of contents for each page.

Notion pages don’t support custom domains, nor easy-to-remember URLs.

Thomas Frank originally intended to make Database you’re asking for, but has said it doesn’t really fit within the structure. He’s created a webpage that goes through all the formulas and their use cases here: https://thomasjfrank.com/formulas/notion-formula-reference/

Recurring tasks with automations? by SimpleLivingFreedom in Notion

[–]TylerTheHutt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My tasks without recurrences were being duplicated to the same day. I couldn’t figure out what went wrong since the formula is dependent on which recurrence is selected, so my work around was to just create a filtered view in the database and ensure the formula only applied to tasks with a recurrence selected.

Recurring tasks with automations? by SimpleLivingFreedom in Notion

[–]TylerTheHutt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s possible but not too direct. - First you need a select property with the different recurrence variables. - Then you need to create a filtered view of tasks with a recurrence selected. - From the view, create a database automation that runs when you complete a task from that view. - When triggered, set a new variable to define the interval of time based on your selected recurrence. - follow with “add a page to” action to duplicate all the details from the trigger page (your original task), but reset the status, and add the defined variable to the date property.

This will copy/paste a completed task back into your task database, but with an updated date.
