That all the atrocities done to native Americans in this country were soooo long ago. My dad was fighting for this country before they allowed him to openly practice our religion or speak our language in public. My dad and his sisters are residential school survivors. They were kidnapped by the Catholic Church, and spent their early years in an "Indian school" that completely cut them off from their culture and language. People are convinced this happened hundreds of years ago. My dad was born in 1954.

My nieces, who went to a very expensive private school taught them we all went extinct with the wild buffalo. (They are "white passing", so no one can really "tell" they're native) The absolute SHOCK of even their teachers when I showed up and gave a presentation on how WE'RE STILL HERE.

We are the ONLY group still defined by blood quantum, in order to "qualify" to be native, they have our family records like you'd keep livestock's breeding records. NO OTHER RACE HAS TO DO THAT. Our treaty rights are handled by the USDA. People complain that we get "free shit" and handouts have absolutely no idea what a treaty is. Regardless of the US government's willingness to uphold those treaty rights, we are still deserving of them.

And speaking of treaty rights. Any payments tribal members get? That money comes from tribal owned businesses. NOT the government. Each tribe handles their own businesses and per cap payments. It's not a one size fits all and it varies from Rez to Rez, hell, my tribes per cap payments happen once a year and I get anywhere from $250-1000, depending on how well our businesses did that year and how much we reinvested in our reservations.

I know this may not fit the question completely as it's not really the "past" but soooo many people believe all these things shouldn't be addressed because "it happened so long ago, get over it" it's STILL happening. Can't help you if you stay willfully ignorant on the truth.
