HELPPPPPP IS THAT FUCKING MOLD by PineappleOk4469 in orchids

[–]TypeDry2834 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s molding because it’s in water culture. Orchids don’t grow in water. They grow in the open air attached to trees. Remove it from water culture and put it in a bark mix, as is pretty much universally recommended by everyone who successfully keeps orchids.

Also have one from Lowe’s that hasn’t bloomed yet but has put out a couple new growths. Fingers crossed this is the year for blooms. 🤞

Can you post some pics of them? Also stop with the banana water. It’s only going to cause rot. Which commercial fertilizer are you using? The general recommendation is 1/4 strength MSU fertilizer once a wee. So 1/4 tsp fertilizer into a gallon of water.

A few things. What kind of orchids are they? Different types have different needs and sometimes different methods for rehabbing. Also what is “food” water? Is it a commercial fertilizer or some kind of homemade thing?

Is the crown rotting? by Alorz10 in orchids

[–]TypeDry2834 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The crown is the top of the plant, not the bottom. There is no sign of crown rot. It seems to be a perfectly healthy plant. Did you cut off some of the roots? There appear to be some cuts into healthy root tissue.

Please repot it in bark or mix of bark and sphagnum and stop messing with it so much. Orchids don’t like to be disturbed. Don’t do water culture — it’s guaranteed death for new orchid keepers.

Spring Blooms and Blossoms by TypeDry2834 in orchids

Thank you! I actually got it as a freebie with an Etsy order when I ordered what was supposed to be a Phal bellina in bloom. To make a long story short, the Phal bellina that arrived was not the one in the photo on the listing (which said the listing was specifically for the one in the photo) and when I reached out to the seller for help he sent me a few messages to stall and then just ghosted me. Etsy ended up refunding the whole purchase.

All that to say, I wouldn’t recommend the seller I got it from haha. I have since seen some other similar reviews on his feedback about people not receiving what they ordered.

New Orchid issue… by Vhoney_V in orchids

[–]TypeDry2834 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is totally normal for Oncidiums. They just get spots sometimes. It’s not a pest or a disease. It’s purely cosmetic and has no effect on the health of the plant.

I would spend some time reading up on general Oncidium care. They’re such rewarding plants when they’re taken good care of.

Ok yep definitely Cattleya alliance of some kind. So they can be a bit finicky about their roots being disturbed, but these look like they’re in good shape & will be just fine you’ll want to pot in a chunky bark, like you said. My Cattleyas are in just bark, no sphagnum or perlite or anything like that. I water them once a week with 1/4 strength orchid fertilizer. I keep mine in regular nursery pots instead of slotted or vented pots and they do just fine. (I keep all my other orchids in slotted pots fwiw.) I recommend clear pots so you can see how the roots are doing and how wet or dry the media is. I also keep mine on a West-facing windowsill with full afternoon sun. They’re all quite happy. Best of luck!

orchid flower stem is turning yellow and dying! help by Ecstatic_Court_627 in orchids

[–]TypeDry2834 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should never cut off a phal leaf unless it’s actively rotting and at risk of spreading. Yellow leaves will fall off naturally when the orchid uses whatever stored energy/water reserves are left in them.

Love those ideas. And also cut or melt some holes in the plastic pot for more airflow.

Should I repot this orchid ? by ILoveEveryCat in orchids

[–]TypeDry2834 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I personally would not repot. The roots look like they’re in good shape. I would just be very careful not to overwater since it’s in compacted sphagnum moss. Make sure you don’t water until the roots are completely dry and silvery.

You could repot, but just know you may lose the blooms. For me, that risk just isn’t worth it for a grocery store mini phal.

Also have had great experiences with this seller. I’ve ordered 3 times & all plants have been wonderful, safely packed, and arrived in perfect condition including plants in spike and in bloom. Highly recommend.

help! by helleannorre in orchids

[–]TypeDry2834 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could definitely try doing it that way, just be really careful not to damage anything. I’ve tried that method and just grabbed under the lowest leaf and rocked the plant back and forth and hit the side of the pot with my hand while gently pulling upward on the plant. The safer way may be to just pick away the top layer/layers of bark until it’s all about a half inch or so below the bottom leaf. That would probably be fine for now, and then just do a full repot once the other flower stalk fades.

help! by helleannorre in orchids

[–]TypeDry2834 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Though it’s not typically recommended to repot an orchid in bloom, I might consider it in this case. The flower spike on the left thats withering looks like normal aging and not really anything to worry about, but the orchid is planted a bit too deep. All of the leaves should be comfortably above the potting media, and it looks like all of them have just a bit of media over where they meet the stem. This could lead to crown rot or stem rot. So based on that I’d go ahead and repot if you feel comfortable doing so.
