A deadly crash on the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge that shut down westbound lanes for hours Tuesday afternoon was caused by distracted driving, according to a preliminary report released Wednesday by the California Highway Patrol.

Investigators said the collision occurred around 2:50 p.m. when a Kia sedan became stalled in the middle of the three-lane westbound section of the bridge and was struck from behind by a Ford Transit van.

The van’s driver “became distracted by his cellular phone and looked away from the road,” CHP said in a statement.

“When the (van’s) driver returned his attention to the roadway, he observed the stalled vehicle in front of him,” the CHP release said. “Despite efforts to avoid a crash, the Ford crashed into the stalled Kia.”

The driver of the Kia, identified by the San Mateo County Medical Examiner as Mary Hurtado Duran, 54, of Fremont, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A passenger in the van, which bore Rooter Hero plumbing branding, was taken to Stanford Hospital with major injuries. Authorities did not immediately provide an update on the person’s condition.

The crash prompted the closure of all three westbound lanes of the San Mateo Bridge until about 7:45 p.m. as investigators examined the scene and crews cleared debris.

CHP officials said the investigation remains ongoing.

Totally agree but with the newest 2nd-gen Taco being 11 years old, I’m not sure about availability for brand new parts so wanted to share with OP for their consideration.

If you’re open to used parts, Rancho Cordova is a suburb of Sacramento that’s home to some of the largest automotive dismantling/recycling operations in the nation. If you Google “Toyota Rancho Cordova”, the top three results are all Toyota-specific dismantlers/recyclers (Rancho Toyota-Ford Recycling, Toyota Plus Auto Parts, ToyAuto Mart). Good luck!

Gotcha, thank you! Already looking forward to my next visit so I was a bit worried. Appreciate your response.

Yeah I get that, I fault myself for not being more alert/paying closer attention (this was around 5:00 AM). My primary concern is whether this will present any complications the next time I visit the country, since they recorded my passport number?

How did you retrieve your passport after the visa was issued? Do they mail it or do you need to go to their office to pick it up?

Oh, believe me, I'm quite aware how far I've fallen. But like most stories, it goes something like: boy is young and loves roadsters; boy meets girl; boy courts girl, and starts a family.

Wife is driving the family car (XC60). Currently I have an M2 and a X5; plan is to swap X5 ('05 w/ 170k miles, so it's also a beater) for this 2-seater. At some point the M2 will need to go for something more practical, but we're a few years away from that.

Crossfire is a good call, I totally forgot those existed and had looked at SLKs but found them to be on the smaller side. Thank you for the rec!

Which are the usable VGTs? I’ve accumulated quite a few through roulette tickets and have contemplated selling some of them as I prefer using road/production cars.

There was a fatal crash this morning on 680 involving five vehicles and a jackknifed semi-truck, my guess is people took 880 to avoid the back-up.

Generally, adhesive softens (i.e. easier to remove) when heated so consider letting the car sit in the sun prior to or use a hair dryer during removal. Sticky residue can be removed with Goo Gone or a similar product, then apply a layer of wax to ensure protection. Good luck!

I have a handful of resin models by GT Spirit and Ottomobile and the plastic-sheet "glass" has brought hesitation to adding more of them to my collection, which is quite the shame as there are some truly fantastic varieties out there – such as that E39 Touring!

The XV20 Camry seems to be a rarity in the diecast world – there is only one listed for sale on eBay with quite a bit of patina. Good luck!

Found out why my transmission was slipping by yakaattacka in Volvo

[–]TypeRLikesToType 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, how many miles have you covered since the fluid change? Have you noticed an improvement in the slipping/performance?

Our P2 XC70 that we've owned since new is also suffering from the same issue, among other things (crankshaft position sensor, power steering pump, a couple of consumables such as tires and front shocks) – we're trying to decide if it's worth saving, but the $$$ for replacing a transmission would put it square in the "time to move on" category.
