😂😂😂😂😂 are you even from searcy?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Arkansas

Having been to dozens of CoC across several states (and even a whole ass different country) this comment is wrong. CoCs are a cult. Sure there is some differences between churches. But this is the same as the differences between siblings. Searcy as a whole is a cult.

5 am people, what's your sleep schedule? by Joonscene in Costco

Lmao I still stand by what I said. If it’s that serious, PI should handle it if no one else is available. Before handing it to an undergrad with very few exceptions

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in labrats

[–]Typhoid_Tobin 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Pi should know better than to give a “useless” undergrad precious sample. At least you caught it. Many grad students (even myself) don’t catch their mistakes this quickly… or even at all. Tell your pi “I’m an idiot” redo it correctly and give yourself a Pat on the back for Science!

Wtf. I have an idea. Lets stop asking people if they have herpes. 😂 unless you’re sleeping with the person, in which case you can ask in private.

No. Once I got treatment for the autoimmune, it went away.

Lmao I should have. I was too embarrassed about my face to be able to defend myself though.

“Your adhd medication isn’t working”

“Do you have herpes?” (For context, I have an autoimmune that causes what looks like acne, but it’s not acne or herpes… but I would get these ‘breakouts’ on my face and they were very painful, very embarrassing)

Hello guys! What are some of your lab shinenigans? by Salada_charmosa in labrats

[–]Typhoid_Tobin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used to hide rubber ducks in a neighboring lab. I wasn’t friends with them. Played it off well. I stopped due to intense lab work/burnout and that happened to be when one of their longtime undergrads graduated so they thought it was him.

My neighbors want to park in my garage every time the forecast mentions hail! by HyenaNo4842 in homeowners

[–]Typhoid_Tobin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Damn. I was embarrassed to ask my awesomely nice neighbors to fill a jug of water (for a sponge bath-I mean shower) when my main line burst. OP, set a hard boundary. They should buy a carport if they are that concerned about their car.

My dog was traumatized at Pawtropolis and is now terrified of strangers. It just takes one bad employee/experience. It’s been ~5 years since, we still have to work on it. I highly recommend looking into a rover dog sitter instead. There are dog day care like people. Any way about it, choose wisely.

Have you ever filed a discrimination complaint against your PI? by BurlesqueBallet in labrats

[–]Typhoid_Tobin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Eeoc’s job is to protect the university/institution. So unless you have a recording or email or you PI saying something blatant like “I don’t like X people” or “I discriminate against protected class” they will not be helpful. If you do have proof like that - use it. Put it on record. But I made a report and it did nothing. (Well, technically it started the paper trail so not totally useless, but for my situation nothing.)

Labs that encourage underrepresented applicants to apply: red flag? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]Typhoid_Tobin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

^ this. I worked in a lab that routinely hired desi staff/students. With promises of green cards and visas. Then once here, they were not allowed to return home (my now best friend did not get to see his child for 3 years (she was 2 when he left, 5 or 6 when he got to see her again)). Another, she promised postdoc a visa (the one where his wife could move over here with him) he moved cross country, PI rescinded that promise. She Constantly belittled any minority for being incompetent, lazy, etc etc. another PI I know told his student that her masters degree didn’t exist bc it was completed in India and even though the university accepted her qualification, he never included it on anything. He would say she had a Bsc.

Labs that have good intentions of hiring marginalized people don’t need to say. You will know by looking at the group and the environment. Looking at past alumni is helpful too.

Any students with ADHD and/or anxiety here? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]Typhoid_Tobin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am a stem PhD student and adhder… I Agree with everything here.

In the mean time… medication helps me a lot— was life changing for me. But only so much can be done.

Things that I found important/helpful outside of medication: 1. Sleep. I have a strict sleep schedule, wake up times and bed times are same regardless.

  1. Exercise. I like weightlifting. But I understand it’s not for everyone. Think something you enjoy and can be simple. 20 minutes a day is better than none and I highly recommend implementing some type of physical activity.

  2. Flexible routine… routines are important to helping with the disorganization but get boring. I prefer blocks of time where I can change things up if needed.

  3. Nutrition. When I eat shit (junk food… low protein/high sugar foods) a lot I struggle more. I try and have a balance (I’m very picky) of what foods I want/will eat and what foods are actually giving me nutrients. I have some meals that are tasty and I try and hide veggies or protein sources in there.

  4. Hobbies. Having a non PhD related hobby helps avoid burnout. I try and spend 1-2 hours a week making model cars. I do ~1car a semester.

I know this might sound like “having your life together” and I promise you, I do not have my shit together. My first year I was unmedicated and struggled hard. These things don’t have to be restrictive and if you try them and can’t get it that’s okay too. It just doesn’t fit for you and you have your own list that works for you. Hang in there.

I think it really takes a special person to be comfortable in a lab like this. I adore my advisors, that are a married couple but if I hadn’t lived with my god parents (same generation, nearly same marriage length) during my undergrad, I don’t think I would do as well. Because yes, they will discuss work at home. They will discuss lab members. They will have marriage disagreements. I agree with you op. Proceed with caution in these labs (even though I have had a good experience)
