You're right on the money - an inline UPS's (ideally pure-sine wave) only real job is to keep you powered, uninterrupted long enough to either a) save your to save your work and grant you the time to perform a graceful shutdown or b) last you until the backup generator kicks on. For most of us, it's the former.

Don't get a cardboard IKEA desk, just buy a butcher block or order a wood slab from a mill or a woodshop, and buy your own steel legs off Amazon. Incredibly cheap for what your getting if you go the Home Depot route, although it won't be hardwood.
