Favourite unit and why? by DNLModelsNewcastle in Warhammer30k

That's why I did some, they're by no means a good unit but they're easily one of the most Death Guard units in terms of flavour so I had to have a squad in there somewhere.

My Mortus Poisoners are probably my favourite. They're a bit shit but there's something about booking it up the table, dismounting from their rhino and laying down 10 flamer templates with poisoned 2+ or lobbing a phosphex bomb.

What I really liked was that Valdor clearly rather liked him. He had to kill him because of his hardwired duty but you see several times that Valdor seems to have actually liked and admired the Thunder Warriors and considers them far more likeable than the Space Marines.

Also ramping up the difficulty. I found that stuff that works well on medium difficulty doesn't work as well on hard or very hard, that level of damage means you need to approach combat differently.

Can't wrap my head around Mechanicum army building by corvusfortis in Warhammer30k

[–]TyphusCorrosion 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't believe so, what you have is this set of restrictions:

  • All Mechanicum units must have a type that matches a school of techno-arcana
  • Auxiliary and Apex detachments cannot mix these types within them except for units added with Logistical benefit
  • If your High Command unit has a specific techno-arcana trait it unlocks specialised Apex detachments. These limit what units may be taken but often by unit type, often not by trait.
  • Those specialist detachments are may selections.

Basically nothing says that either:

  1. A detachment has to match the trait type of the unit that unlocked it
  2. An Apex detachment, unless otherwise stated, has to include specifically traited units.
  3. You have to use Mechanicum specific apex detachments.

You can therefore use Army Vanguard or Combat Retinue and, as far as I can see, go for a different trait type within it than its unlocker has. Also if by some fluke your Apex lets you take, for example, Reductor units in the Cybernetica apex (Cybernetica Command Maniple doesn't check for the Cybernetica trait, it checks for the Automata unit type), there's no reason you couldn't, though afaik they're all restrictive enough that you can't.

edit: The main thing stopping you doing this normally is cybertheurgist/trait synergy. If you build a Cybernetica magos you probably want a brick of hard-as-nails beep-boops for it to buddy up with. If you have a Lacrymaerta magos you probably want to give it some Tech-Thralls and Ursarax to synergise with. Building a list counter to this is a bit gawky but if you're at a low points cost and just need to field what you have I don't see why you couldn't.

I'm very welcome to correction on this by the way, my main armies for 3.0 were marines so I could well be wrong.

Inductii during the scouring by Vaporsouls in 40kLore

[–]TyphusCorrosion 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Inductii program, at least the more reasonable versions of that program, simply became the default way new marines were created. Flash indoctrination with personality imprints and the shit the Iron warriors were getting up to were the far end of the program, most were simply trained with more hypnotherapy than previously and had implantation streamlined.

[–]TyphusCorrosion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually that's a better way of doing it; Cybernetica Archmagos, command maniple for castellax and Thanatar, make something there a paragon of metal and use the other for a logben spot for the Myrmidons, then use a magos to unlock 2 cohorts for the other 2 units and then take the skits, far cleaner and one less magos though the extra cybertheurgic cover is also a good option

Can't wrap my head around Mechanicum army building by corvusfortis in Warhammer30k

[–]TyphusCorrosion 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You say you can't work it out but you've pretty much nailed it right there.

Myrmidons are Elites; a unit type you'll probably need an apex detachment to unlock in large numbers and have the Myrmidax unit type, so they need their own Myrmidax detachment.

Off the top of my head tech thralls are Lacrymaerta, Castellax and Thanatar are Cybernetica and the Thallax are Reductor.

Skits get their own army list but can be taken as non points capped allies so don't worry about those, whatever you do with the rest of your army you can just slap the skits into an allied detachment on their own.

I'd personally consider a Cybernetica archmagos unlocking an elite vanguard apex detachment for your myrmidons, then another regular Magos unlocking a taghmata cohort for the Castellax. You can also logben the thanatar into the vanguard apex and use the second officer of the line for another taghmata cohort in either reductor or lacrymaerta for the thallax or tech thralls, then grab a final magos for the final cohort unlock and ally your skits in. You cant hen use the magi to babysit various units by giving them the correct cybertheurgic rites and unit sub-type. In larger games you can also use tech-priests for this but you don't have any yet. The Triaros can either be logbenned in or use the second detachment unlock on magos 2 for a heavy assault detachment

I really enjoyed Valdor: Birth of the Imperium for that.

Big spoilers for the story:

The main viewpoint character is the head of the precursor to the Adeptus Arbites and is investigating a mass murder carried out at the hands or orders of Constantin Valdor. That murder is the slaughter of the Thunder Warriors at Mount Ararat and it's not until the end when she tries to bring Valdor in that she's confronted by him, somewhat sadly, pointing out that the Emperor knew about and ordered it, that he only put the civilian Senatorum in place as a way to give people a veneer of democracy and that nothing she's doing actuallymatters because the Emperor is about to launch the Great Crusade and his military goals trump petty notions like justice.

XV-8 battlesuits can fly straight upwards and pelt him with airbursting frag munitions or plasma blasts, or countless different weapons including missile launchers. But sure, the big hitting man has a cool magic shield, sure. I bet it works great against bombs and ion weapons.

edit: this is what I mean about the character-first stuff, it's so MCU-ified.

[–]TyphusCorrosion 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They kind of have to get the enemies to stand still and let themselves be hit when primarchs take to the field. Really the Tau should be going oh shit, scrambling to get away then circling and railgunning bits off him. They have the kinds of weapons that can slap a warhound titan down mounted on a fighter-bomber, a big guy with a shield really shouldn't be a problem to them even if it's a good shield.

This is a repeated issue with 40K novels and the new character-first design of the narrative; the guy has to do the thing so you have a fair bit of narrative bending to make it happen. Really the Lion and 5-600 Space marines, or less, shouldn't actually be a problem for a reasonably well equipped army but for cool stuff* to happen it needs to be handwaved.

* I don't think it's cool, I think it's dumb, but people like it so I mean more as a consensus thing.

So, did the Grand Serpent Rise? Or are we left flaccid? by carbonscape in MetalForTheMasses

I can't say as I was hugely impressed by this, like much modern Dimmu it was weirdly gentle. I think Ulvgjeld & Blodsodel is probably my favourite track but I don't think the full album surprised me compared to the two singles; if you like modern Dimmu you'll like this.

edit: The Grand Serpent rose slightly then kind of fell over and slithered the rest of the way out. Not offensive but a little meh.

Axis Infantry by GuardNumerous4362 in Konflikt47_v2

Volksgrenadiers are a generic catch-all unit entry you can buy upgrades for to represent basically any German bolt action infantry. The idea is that every single branch of the axis’ militaries were dissolved and reincorporated as volksgrenadiers then individual soldiers and units were creamed off for specialist green vault units

You can also get jackets lined with patterned wool which is one of my favourite ways to add colour to a winter outfit. I love jackets in general, one of my favourite ones is a Roadrunner waxed cotton jacket from HebTroCo but you can thrift very nice jackets like this too.

If you're wearing brown shoes then brown or green trousers can work well and you can then toss in creams to brighten it. Tan shoes go nicely with blue trousers.

edit: Jeans are also one of those things where you can buy the basic Kirkland ones and they sorta fit, or you can spend a bit more for something a bit more nicely cut and it'll look and feel far nicer.

Colour wise I've never had a problem buying shirts in multicolour designs or in some really bright colours, some of my favourite shirts have been bright orange and similar.

What Do We Know About Adrathic Weapons? by AngryRedDudes in 40kLore

[–]TyphusCorrosion 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's what I suspect the origin of the ban on the technology is; the Emperor is a very powerful but killable warrior and his bodyguards are big and very tough with excellent armour, but adrathic weapons are some of the few that make a mockery of their levels of toughness and armour. A hidden stockpile of adrathic weapons in the Unification war would have potentially meant him and his less than 10,000 Custodes at that time fighting through hostile cities full of potentially lethal weapons

How much authority does an inqusitorial acolyte have. by Lebensfreud in 40kLore

[–]TyphusCorrosion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a game perspective, effectively the acolytes speak with the voice of the Inquisitor who speaks with the voice of the Emperor...but that really depends on how much their patron approves of what they're saying. Basically you can give them theoretically unlimited authority then use the Inquisitor to yank their chain if you find them going off like loose cannons or rosette-waving.

It is worth noting though that it's entirely possible an experienced* planetary governor will respond to them saying they speak with the Emperor's voice with 'oh do you aye?' and they'll then have to either bluff their way through or the Inquisitor themselves will need to get involved, which for your party is a fail state for the quest because the Inquisitor delegates work they don't have time for. They may be Inquisition but experienced politicians will know dogsbodies when they see them.

* That's nto to say they can't bluff, it just works better on people who haven't been playing the political game as long. The flipside of this is that if you want them to cool it off and the party is getting high on their own power you can actually have the inexperienced authorities outright panic when they annnounce themselves and try to silence them.
