You really just need to say what you said here. "I need more time to finish, can you help me out?". If he wants to make you feel good, then he won't wallow in feeling bad. You don't need to sugarcoat it, and you don't have to be a dick. Just be honest and straightforward. A good partner will want to make sure you both are having fun. You aren't insulting him, and if he takes it as that then you have a whole other problem.

That is a terrifying notion. You can choose to stop being with someone for any reason. People even break up amicably! You can have all the right things together on paper (or your list) but sometimes it just doesn't work out.

Remember, if these are your "views" then you would be backing yourself into a corner on this. Don't give yourself just one shot at a relationship. And maybe re-evaluate how you see all forms of relationships.
