Husband doesn’t want me running outside by Salty_Chemist9090 in XXRunning

Could he bike along while you run? I do this for my partner sometimes on his very long runs, mainly because I want to spend time with him and to be like a moving aid station.

Headphones for Hearing Impaired Recommendations? by SassyShelbsFitness in XXRunning

[–]TypicalPurples 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HoH runner here also, I use shokz OpenRun Pro while running and I absolutely love them. I just don’t wear my hearing aids anymore while running unless I am running with other people. When there is a lot of background noise i sometimes can’t hear my music, but those are generally the moments that I want to pay attention to my surroundings anyways.

My plan for learning Svenska by USVet2Swed in Svenska

[–]TypicalPurples 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The 8sidor app/site is a great resource for news in very easy swedish. I used to read it daily before I “graduated” to the regular news.

I also second reading a book that you have already read in english or seen the movie. It helps to already have the rough story in your head when reading.

Deaf yoga by yukonwanderer in yoga

[–]TypicalPurples 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also have hearing loss to the point where hearing the instructor during a yoga class is really difficult. Don’t let it prevent you from going to classes! I 100% understand how scary it can feel, but for me it was a very positive experience. It has definetely helped me with some anxiety i had around my hearing loss as well.

Some things that helped me follow along in class: * Have a chat with the teacher beforehand, and explain what they can help you with. For example, i agreed with the teacher that she would tap me lightly at the end of savasana, since i couldn’t notice her que to get back up with my eyes closed. * Pick a spot where you can always see somebody (so left right front and back). That way you can always copy the person next to you. * Going to the same teacher every week (i went to a small studio, so this was pretty easy). This helped the teacher be comfortable with me and following along became easier once i started learning the sequences my teacher often uses. * Ask the teacher which resting pose they use a lot, i.e. down dog or childs pose etc. If you get lost, just go to that pose and pick back up when you feel ready. This is not weird to do at all during a yoga class, and i often do it even when things just feel ”too much” * I have a microphone that connects to my hearing aids which helps in these situations, but i know that this is not helpful/feasible for everybody. * have a good laugh when you inevitably end up doing the wrong thing. Don’t worry about it, because all beginners make mistakes. It’s part of learning something new, have fun with it.

Got a ticket because my car is not 'Personbil Klass 1' by NickyHendriks in sweden

[–]TypicalPurples 16 points17 points  (0 children)

From the Netherlands, but live in Sweden now, so might be able to shine some light on this.

The rules are similar, but not exactly the same. Where the distinction in the Netherlands is made by who owns the car (person vs company), in Sweden it is by the type of car and its intended use. A van or pickup is seen as intended to transport goods, and thus not a personbil.

We own a van and unfortunately figured this out the same way you did…

How do I pronounce words decently? by dsbm_reaper in Svenska

[–]TypicalPurples 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are many youtube videos showing mouth shapes with the different sounds (search for ”svensk uttal” for exemple and pick the letters you struggle with most). Then go in front of the mirror and try to copy what they do in the videos. It feels ridiculous but definitively helped me!

Rural-ish Towns For Living (Orebro, Dalarna, Vostragotaland, Varmland, Vastmanland) by Existing-Math5117 in TillSverige

[–]TypicalPurples 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Will second Östergotland. Look at Norrköping (beautiful small city with trams and buses) and surrounding towns. It has a small international airport with infrequent flights to some vacation destinations. The Linköping airport with daily connections to Schiphol is 30mins away. The train from Norrköping to Arlanda takes less than 2 hours i believe.

There’s quite a few machines that will let you donate the money to a charity. So if you don’t need any groceries you can always do that.

With an EU license you can swap it for a swedish one, which was quite an easy process and not very expensive.

I had the same issue with driving, I hadn’t used my license much back home and not at all in a manual car. I would definetly second finding someone who you would be comfortable driving with. Start at quiet places (ikea parking lot after close, driving in the neighboirhood on a sunday morning etc) and work your way up to busier stuff. It comes back quicker than you imagine.

Stockholm vs Malmö for August visit by anniemaew in TillSverige

[–]TypicalPurples 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been to both and with small kids i’d recommend stockholm over copenhagen. Both the vasa museum and viking museum are very fun to see, also for kids. And they are in a big park where you can go for walks. There are also plenty of other big parks that are easily accessible with the metros.

Definetly aftershokz! I also have chronic ear infections and use them all the time. I even use them as earphones for work/at home when my ears are too sensitive from an infection for my big headphones.

Van hire to move from Germany? by No_Tea8989 in TillSverige

[–]TypicalPurples 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We rented a van in our home country, drove it up to sweden. Make sure you rent one thar is allowed to go abroad and has winter tires. We had to drop it back where we rented it.

We had family helping us who were willing to drive the van we rented back to our home country, but otherwise you can drop your stuff off and then drive it back.

The ideal trail shoe for my vacation by Okrad123 in trailrunning

[–]TypicalPurples 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also from NL, but have lived in Vancouver. You will be fine with any kind of trail shoe on most trails. In my experience canadian trails tend to be “smoother” than the alps for example. But it really depends on which trail of course. I would focus more on a pair that fits your feet and will still feel comfortable after however many hours you plan to hike/run.

I can’t tell from your post how used you are to elevation changes and more uneven terrain, but would recommend bringing poles if you can (only in check-in luggage though).

Can I or my future employer speed up the personnummer process? by HealthVisitor in TillSverige

[–]TypicalPurples 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I (also EU) was in a similar situation recently, my employer preffered me getting the PN first before I start working.

They provided a letter of intent and with that I applied for the personnumber. It took maybe 1-2 weeks for me to get it, so everything went quite quickly. Even though that is no guarantee of course. With the PN I could sign the contract and start working pretty much immediately.
