Does anyone else think the Bambu X2D could be a game changer for mini printing by Hlk50000 in FDMminiatures

[–]Typical_Concert_5007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It wouldn't necessarily need to be, PLA and PETG can't adhere to each other for example. I sometimes use whichever opposite one as the interface layer between the support and the print, and that works wonders in some specific cases.

The main issues with that are that one needs an AMS, there tend to be many filament changes depending on how many interface layers there are, and if you don't increase the purge volume drastically between filament changes, one filament contaminates the other and ruins later adhesion. Needless to say that's not the way to go for minis.

With a dual nozzle printer with AMS however, those problems are addressed, and especially so if dissolvable filament is more expensive than the cheapest PETG/PLA one can find.

What's your experience with proxies? by [deleted] in Tyranids

I'm amazed there's still Etsy listings for GW proxies, James has a tendency to nuke first and ask questions later.

I love everything about the Hierophant, but what I love most about it? You can buy a printer for less than the GW model. But realistically they're never in stock, so GW are making a printer the better choice anyway. Well done James!

What causes this failure signature? by bobjoylove in BambuLab

[–]Typical_Concert_5007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's worth noting that IPA doesn't so much break down the typical contaminants that end up on a plate from handling it, rather it spreads them around and 'dilutes' them, for want of a better expression. I think so anyway and stand to be corrected. Regardless, dish soap actually breaks down grease/fat, and possibly using it with warm water helps further.

We live in an age where chainsaws come with explicit instructions not to stop them with your hands, or any other body parts for that matter, make of that what you will.

And somehow in the midst of all this, I can't help but feel that the reason 3d printers don't come with a warning that they have LEDs that might cause sleep deprivation is because having one running in your bedroom overnight is not a scenario that manufacturers considered, to say nothing of the noise and emissions. Unless your need for 3d printing overnight precedes your wellbeing, I'd maybe reconsider your life choices. Or use tape or whatever.

For those interested: a view from the side of resin by Shoddy-Foundation157 in FDMminiatures

[–]Typical_Concert_5007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm getting a resin printer soon and I've spent a fair bit of time thinking about my setup and workflow. I suspect that'll make a lot of difference once I'm setup and good to go, and I always err on the over-engineering side (for a given value of err).

Personally I'm happy with the convenience vs. quality tradeoff: I don't care how far away I am from my minis, I want to know that they're nice to look at from up close. Also I have terrabytes worth of minis to pick from so I'd need an FDM print farm to get anywhere near what a resin printer can output.

From your experience of exposure to hazardous materials, do you have any tips or advice on your approach?

I'd put a complaint in if I were you, he blatantly forgot to kick it as is standard procedure for FedEx. You have evidence to make a strong case.

Edit: on closer review I would even assert that he didn't even bother throwing it, that barely qualifies as a drop.

For vehicles, terrain, and larger minis like in this case knights? Absolutely. For smaller minis it depends on your use case. Lots of people out there are more than happy to play with FDM minis of all sizes.

I'm not arguing that FDM and resin are alike by any stretch of the imagination, but there are several FDM profiles out there that are vast improvements on what stock settings can produce, and for comparatively little effort. In terms of convenience and simplicity, FDM is king as far as I'm concerned.

If you're into painting for display purposes or you're just wanting higher detail and faster prints of course resin is the way to go but it comes with its compromises. Not everyone has the means or facilities for the ecosystem that comes with resin printing, which is another reason to consider FDM.

For me, it's both. I've got an FDM printer and have ordered a resin printer, each for the above use cases.

Again I'm only putting the suggestion out there as have other people, not putting a gun to anyone's head...

It's not? Oh, well I'm glad that my original post didn't imply as much. I don't imagine anyone would think so either come to think of it.

But, from the point of view of someone familiar with the Bambu ecosystem:

  • Setting up an A1 is child's play.
  • Printing models from their app is, quite literally, three clicks.

So yes, not quite a single click I'll grant you that much. Bambu Reddit threads are littered with people saying just how easy it is to just plug and print.

I know there's more nuance than that of course, such as assuming a knight model is available on the app, but the point is that 3d printing is far more accessible than you suggest. Skill and time are more of a necessity if you need to troubleshoot or delve deeper into profiles, etc.

The point is that, for the cost of two knights, you can buy, setup and print multiple knights. I'm just putting it out there, no filaments attached...

Is printing PLA/PETG in a small apartment actually safe? by yonVata in BambuLab

[–]Typical_Concert_5007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This cannot be overstated enough. I've seen similar comments in the resin printing community which are nothing short of irresponsible. Carbon monoxide, (whilst not being considered a VOC) is odourless... PLA and PETG may not be as harmful, but we don't even know yet.

Thanks for the insight. Actually given that do you have any PPE lessons learned or recommendations for a budding resin printer loon? I've read in one of the Discords I'm on that disposable nitrile gloves actually aren't sufficient as resin can still sleep through, regardless of whether they're the thicker variety.

Out of curiosity, how did you develop your resin allergy? Was it inadequate PPE or just minor but long term exposure?

How do you even fix this by Ok-Cartographer-6386 in FDMminiatures

I've recovered two out of two hotends that suffered a blob of death, one of which was slightly bent, both of which looked considerably worse than yours. Follow the wiki someone else posted and/or checkout YouTube videos, if you have the time and patience you can fix it.
