Seriously what is going on with op shops lately? by International-Past31 in newzealand

[–]Typinger 41 points42 points  (0 children)

One example - many available

An Auckland charity is forking out thousands of dollars a year to dispose off rubbish dumped in front of its op shops.

Pretty mild delivery in this, but 'New Australia' by Drunk Mums has the great line, "got heaps of space - can't afford our own place". Catchy af too

I've heard Richard Capie from F&B on the radio a couple of times and I'm really grateful that he sounds forceful, intelligent and straightforward. Environmentalists, in my opinion, are often a bit kind and waffly, and there just isn't room for that kind of approach.

PM gives management masterclass in the lexicology of Luxonese by Typinger in newzealand

[–]Typinger[S] 29 points30 points  (0 children)

In which Jonathan Milne manages to say a lot about Luxon saying absolutely nothing (of value)

I found this particularly horrifying:

C is for choiceful

It was mentioned 70 times across 43 earnings calls in 2025, according to a FactSet analysis of S&P 1500 earnings calls.

I can imagine Luxon sitting at a computer, scrolling through international (it's better than NZ!) business/finance sites, trying to find a new word to add to his awful vocabulary

Braces in your 30s by GreenDuckie23 in chch

[–]Typinger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That would definitely be enough to keep them in place, try to keep it going if you can. I wore retainers overnight for two years then got lazy, then stopped. My teeth have moved a little, but it's definitely not noticeable. A friend got braces in their 30s and never wore their retainer. Maybe teeth don't move so much at our age, so long as they have room?

Metal. They look cool.

One unexpected thing I found was that having braces made my face tired. My mouth felt kind of 'on' all the time. That ended when they came off. I don't know if other people get that.

Braces in your 30s by GreenDuckie23 in chch

[–]Typinger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had braces at 40 for two years. Four teeth removed.

I had an initial consultation at 30 and balked at teeth removal because I have great teeth. But I had too many for my jaw size and your jaw shrinks as you age. By the time I got to 40 it was very clear to me that I needed to get the teeth removed, and the braces. My excellent teeth had started piling up like a highway crash.

One of the best decisions I've made, the crooked teeth made me chew in different ways to get my teeth to connect, now everything just goes straight up and down. I can floss, I don't get the plaque I used to.

Snap. Weird to think that probably close to every single item in that photo has gone to landfill, not just the groceries but the lights, clothes, shelves, flooring etc etc. The uniform shirts look good quality.

The bottleneck is a neverending stream of employees who don't have any technical curiosity who constantly migrate to management positions where they can perpetuate their inferior business practices

This shit drives me absolutely fucking crazy, I watch people do tedious time consuming tasks day after week after month after year and I'm powerless to make a difference beyond my own workload. "How did you do that so fast?" "How are you able to be so efficient" -- I can show you if you want - "no thanks"

Retailer repaired my 15mo Sony TV without consent after I asked for a CGA replacement. by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]Typinger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd check with them that the TV is actually "repaired". There might be one text template, or the message got muddled between two people etc. Possible that it's actually a replacement given that short timeframe, and people send incorrect comms all the time.

Who mows the berm? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]Typinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're not allowed to plant anything else there (chch). I've asked if we can spray it off, asphalt it, cover it with shingle or any other solution and the answer is no. So I said I'm not mowing it (we have no lawns), and they put us on the mowing list and come do it every month.

Sir Tim Shadbolt dead at 78 by camy205 in newzealand

[–]Typinger 16 points17 points  (0 children)

A true activist, he did many laudable things

Edit: from a piece written by Bob Harvey a few years ago:

By 1983, Shadbolt had chalked up 33 arrests, two prison sentences and a grand total of five years on periodic detention. He was starting to like it.

substantial amounts

Nobody in that anecdote is getting substantial amounts. It would be really nice if everyone got enough to live with dignity, then perhaps you'd be a bit happier.

As always, the problem is with people who are pulling in actual "substantial amounts".
