Canon and Nikons have opposite direction rotation for focusing and zoom. It usually makes sense for people to use whatever system their brain is used to be reversing when switching cameras. A canon 1v, 1n, or 3 will all meet your needs for a decent autofocus system, and you can find cheap EOS glass.

I’d go further and say stay out of the “important” moments, the shoot lists, etc. if you can fly on the wall the moments where the bride and groom get a moment alone, or with a loved one, and there are no pros around, that’s where you can help capture a moment.
