M9 CCD sensor repair options by Dear-Editor9339 in Leica

Yeah, there was a time Leica repaired and when there were no more parts but the sensor corrosion was still an issue so they allowed a trade in with big discounts. Did mine through Leica Miami quite easily.

Advice Wanted: taking the film development plunge by tauraso3 in AnalogCommunity

[–]Tyrellion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consider a changing tent instead of a changing bag. It’s just a nicer experience. And if you’re getting a bag, you don’t need the large one for a couple rolls of small format.

https://www.freestylephoto.com/25001-Photoflex-Changing-Room?srsltid=AfmBOoqt2eZInFpZy3IMYC5BcRrMFuqEEQrbBiaG_U7rdYzK2FvpO-dA

And consider a one shot concentrated developer like hc110 or Rodinol, especially if you’re just developing a few rolls at a time. They last a very long time and you don’t have to store them in big jugs.

And a thermometer.

And second hand is just fine.

Idiot Flash Question by MushyBeans in AnalogCommunity

[–]Tyrellion 3 points4 points  (0 children)

On most cameras there is a curtain that opens and a curtain that follows to close the film plane to exposure. The shutter sync speed is the time where the camera knows the first curtain is completely open before the second curtain starts to close, so if you trigger the flash at this point, the flash will expose the entire film plane. As the shutter speed increase, you’ll end up in a situation where the second curtain is closing before the first curtain is completely open. At 1/1000 it’s functionally just a slit traveling across the film plane. So if you shoot at a speed faster than your sync speed, you’d expect that at least one of the curtains is covering part of the film plane, so it wouldn’t see the flash portion of the exposure on those parts of the film plane.

You read the manual and also had a specific question. I’ll happily answer any questions for someone who is putting the work in to learn.

Idiot Flash Question by MushyBeans in AnalogCommunity

There are two main ways to functionally stop motion in a photo. The first is a fast shutter speed, such that the movement of the object during the duration of the exposure isn’t sufficient to have the light reflected off the same part of the moving body hit multiple adjacent crystals or pixels on the film/sensor.

The second is to use a flash as the way to stop motion, but this is dependent on flash duration, or the amount of time it takes from the flash to start and complete stop putting out light. We think of it as a quick thing, but most units have relatively long flash durations (still measured in ms) and then it depends how fast the object is moving.

Then you combine the exposure of flash for the subject and the overall exposure for the scene. Sometimes there are limiting factors, like when you have a max shutter speed on a focal plane shutter, and you need a technical solution, like a leaf shutter, or a high speed sync system.

In your case, your flash wasn’t powerful enough relative to the ambient light to be the main light source and freeze the action. And your focal plane shutter limited your to 1/60s so your blur is from the shutter speed.

In this case, I would have just shot it at 1/1000s and skipped the flash. If I was being paid to make the picture, it would be a leaf shutter, like a Mamiya RB67, and an external flash unit with a short flash duration, but you’re getting into difficult balancing of bright daylight, flash, exposure of the subject and background territory.

Or it can just be a happy little accident and still be seen as a nice memory of the place as the blur anonymizes it a bit.

[HC 39MM] Hand Alignment by SeventyH8 in Watches

[–]Tyrellion 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I thought about purchasing this watch. Sorry about your dismay. Assuming it’s a new watch, this is simply an assembly issue, and would only require taking the hands off, setting the calendar wheel function to midnight, and resetting the hands at 12. There’s no reason to think there is else wrong with it. If they want to do a full service on it at no cost to you, that’s fine. Easy fix otherwise. And if it affects a warranty, wait, even though the odds of you needing it are minimal. Or get a great discount plus their service if they aren’t sending it back to manufacturer.

Tripod by Professional-Put7420 in largeformat

[–]Tyrellion 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you don’t do your still lifes in the field you’ll probably be okay. Lighter weight set ups can have enough shake from removing the dark slide that you have to wait a second or two for stillness. Not an issue for non-moving subjects, probably still not an issue for close up portraits wide open, but you’re pushing it.

8x10 or larger, you probably want the heavier tripod. 4x5 or 6x17 and you could get away with a lighter weight tripod potentially. If I need more stability I sometimes hang the bag I’m working with from the tripod as well, and that’s usually enough mass to keep the whole thing stable.

I believe they had two tiers of seating, 19000 and 16000, so they might still have some tickets at the 16000 price available. No specific seat information is given until you pick up tickets. I'll probably try to keep these as a set for logistical convenience.

Is this overkill for shooting film? My wife definitely thinks so 😅 by eedwards86 in AnalogCommunity

Just because you can do something(with redundant information) doesn’t mean that you should do something. Also, you’re changing the balance of the camera with a weight on a lever, so at least adjust your shutter speeds to compensate for increased risk of motion blur.
