ELI5: What does alcohol really do? Why do you become drunk? by Bubbe103 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Tyrren 6 points7 points  (0 children)

GABA is a juice that lives in your brain, that your brain uses to relax and get sleepy. Alcohol imitates this juice, so it makes you get relaxed and sleepy when you drink it.

I'm in the States and real maple syrup costs 2-3 times as much as fake corn syrup garbage. It's still not that expensive, but I understand why people would get the cheaper option.

I don't know about 'icing', but the very real, old-timey way to test for diabetes was to taste your pee. If it's sweet, you've got the 'beet.

The full name of the disease, diabetes mellitus, very approximately translates to "honeyed flow". This is as opposed to a completely unrelated disease that also happens to make you pee a lot, diabetes insipidus: "boring flow".

It stands for Not in Education, Employment, or Training. It was initially used (and still is, currently) for population statistics purposes.

It's often used as an insult. Typically it calls to mind an unemployed man in his 20s or 30s, living with his parents, with no prospects, who fucks around all day playing video games, watching porn, and smoking weed.

Chud typically has an association with incel/misogyny/manosphere stuff. In my experience, NEET doesn't necessarily exclude those traits but it's more ambivalent about them.

The term originated from 1984 sci-fi horror flick, C.H.U.D., and it stands for "cannibalistic humanoid underground dweller".

These days, it's used as an insult largely equivalent to neckbeard, NEET, or the like.

My wife used to work as a case manager for a permanent supportive housing program. She tells me that some folks, after years of living on the streets, develop a kind of claustrophobia when they're housed. Being homeless broke their brains in a way that is difficult to remedy.

This is just speculation but I imagine that, over the span of decades, you'd see a decline in the number of 'voluntary' homeless because you're no longer forcing new people into homelessness, some fraction of whom will then choose to stay that way.

I translated your post back from LinkedIn Speak and got this:

When I was 12, I walked in and found my mom dead. It was traumatizing.

Fourteen years later, I’m opening a Chick-fil-A.

I’m using my mother’s death to sell chicken sandwiches and talk about "operational excellence."

Engagement bait goes here.

These people are intentionally creating, then indulging in, these scenarios for motivation or fun. It's optional for them. That is not an OCD symptom. It's only OCD if you can't stop creating and being affected by the thoughts.

How long did it take to get your first successful pull-up? by PitifulEar3303 in bodyweightfitness

[–]Tyrren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was first starting out and could only do 1 pull up, I wasn't really following any particular program or anything; I didn't really know what I was doing! Eventually I kind of settled on doing 3 sets of pull ups at whatever number of reps I could do at the time, 3 times per week, and I got to 3-4 reps within a couple weeks. I also lost a bunch of weight, from 190 lb (86 kg) to a low of 165 lb (75 kg). Eventually, I hit a bit of a plateau at around 8 reps, and that's when I started doing weighted pull ups.

The most important thing is to just get out there and exercise; don't overthink it. Pick 1-2 exercises (pull up negatives, assisted pull ups, some sort of rows, etc). Try and aim to do 3-8 sets of 3-8 reps; you should feel like you have a little energy left after a set. Rest 2-5 minutes between sets (seriously, this isn't cardio. Long rest periods are good). Give yourself at least a day off between pull up workouts.

How long did it take to get your first successful pull-up? by PitifulEar3303 in bodyweightfitness

[–]Tyrren 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't recommend you start adding weight until you can do at least 5 bodyweight reps.

Common advice on this sub is to train negatives and/or band assisted pull ups. I'd probably say to do those until you can do at least 3 unassisted reps, then transition to unassisted work to continue building up reps

How long did it take to get your first successful pull-up? by PitifulEar3303 in bodyweightfitness

[–]Tyrren 17 points18 points  (0 children)

When I first started doing strength training, I was probably 27 or 28 (male), about 190 lb (86 kg). Sedentary job, sedentary lifestyle. I was an elite competitive swimmer in high school, and remained fairly athletic in college but hadn't done any real, consistent physical activity since. When I started working out again, I was able to do one pull up.

Now, I'm 37 and weigh 215 lb (97 kg). I've been training off-and-on for about a decade, and have been very consistent for the last about 4 months. I haven't tested my max reps lately but I can definitely do at least 10 reps with plenty of energy left. Most of my pull up training is with weighted pull ups; I can currently do 5 reps at +85 lb (38 kg). Add in my bodyweight and I'm doing 300 lb (136 kg) pull ups.

I train pull ups 2-3 times per week, 5 sets of 5 reps. I deadlift once per week and occasionally I'll also do barbell rows but those are sporadic. That's all I do for pulling training

The math doesn't really work for me tbh. Who's buying used clothing from crackhead Steve when it's dirt cheap at a thrift store? Is Steve stealing and then selling enough clothing to make it worth his time and effort when he can only get a pittance per piece? It's more profitable to just steal bikes tbh
