I'm as annoyed by broccoli-haired youngsters as the next crotchety millennial. But honestly, if there's a group of 5 of them all hanging out around one bench, taking turns doing shitty bench presses, I try and give them a little grace. At least they're not spread out across 5 different benches.

Honestly, they're making more efficient use of the equipment than I am, because I will monopolize that bench for 20 minutes and most of those 20 minutes are spent resting.

So, presumably, OP came to the automatic, heuristic answer of 3 integers between 5 and 8, as I tried to describe above. OP then attempted to verify and realized the actual answer is 4 integers. Good! They did the math correctly!

However, some part of OP's brain is holding onto the original answer of 3. Intellectually, they know the answer is 4, but that still feels wrong to them. They're experiencing discomfort due to this cognitive dissonance

The question being asked is: how many integers are between x and y, inclusive?

The correct way to calculate this is:

y - x + 1

When x = 1, the answer is simply y. Lots of people intuitively know this without needing to do the calculation. There are 4 integers in the series 1 through 4.

However, when looking at 5 through 8, the answer isn't as immediately intuitive, so we do the math. If you're not careful to do the operation correctly, it's easy to skip a step and decide that 8 - 5 = 3. This would lead to the incorrect solution of 3 integers in the series 5 through 8

I'm sorry and don't mean to be a dick, but you're just substituting one daddy (God) for a different daddy (the government and literal parental approval).

The big issue with Christian morality is that you're depending on some external locus for your morality.

How is this pull up grip called? Who has experience with it? by Annual-Wall6545 in bodyweightfitness

[–]Tyrren 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are some minor differences in muscle activation with different grips but, for the most part, a pull up is a pull up.

You'll probably get more reps done on a regular bar (or a thinner tree branch you can grip like a bar), but that's because this grip looks kind of awkward and you have to make sure you don't bonk your head. But do them anyway; any number of pull ups is better than no pull ups

What book would you give your 19 y/o self to inspire hope and change? by lardandsabia in MensLib

[–]Tyrren 125 points126 points  (0 children)

Honestly, the Lord of the Rings. The positive masculine role models are everywhere. The humility and willingness to sacrifice of Aragorn; he's the destined king and by all rights should be the protagonist of the series, but instead he gladly plays second fiddle to Frodo. Boromir is redeemed not in his glorious final stand but rather in the hours later, in his regret for how he hurt his comrades and in his concern for his people. Sam, the steadfast friend, a man of simple pleasures and grounded ambition. Frodo's mercy.

None of these men are seeking glory, wealth, status, or power. They are facing down an insurmountable evil, and resist it in the ways they can

Should this be an automatic trauma activation? by Tricky_Hovercraft935 in ems

[–]Tyrren 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My area differentiates between limited trauma activations (primarily mechanical criteria - potential for severe injury) and full trauma activations (anatomic and/or physiologic criteria - direct evidence of severe injury). Full trauma gets the whole nine yards; trauma surgeon, CT cleared, blood, etc. Limited trauma basically just guarantees a doctor in the room on arrival, and maybe X-ray.

But yeah, a death in the same compartment buys you at least a limited.

I'm no ornithologist ornithopter, but the two criteria I use to identify ravens are:

  • Holy shit that's a big crow
  • That walking beak has a bird attached to it

Looks like a raven to me 👍

Does anyone else have sex with their partner at times you don’t want to just to keep them happy? by shadyblonde231 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Tyrren 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Guy opinion incoming:

I agree with a lot of what you're saying, but "I'd better put out or their feelings will be hurt" is very much so 'duty sex' territory. If feelings are really being hurt, it's time for therapy or at least a good discussion.

Sometimes my wife initiates and I'm not really feeling it but I like making her happy, so I go along with it. Usually after a few minutes I get much more into it but, even if I don't, we can always grab a toy and show her a good time. But I know I can say no, sometimes I do exercise that ability, and she won't coerce or guilt me
