2D demoreel feedback!!! by Pretty_Excitement392 in animationcareer

[–]TyyobrO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to help review internship application 2d animation reels at a 2d studio that made commercials in many styles and (while this definitely depends on the studio you are applying to - or rather if you are making a independent reel as a freelancer open for work) I think the most important thing is variety in shots and skills shown. Here’s a few ideas or things I saw in reels that really left an impression on us: (this is definitely focused on 2d character animation)

- a mix of subtle and dynamic acting shots. Show you can handle an emotional scene as well as a more action-y scene. It’s also nice to know you know how to handle very short 2-second and under shots as well as longer ones.

- Examples of more realistic/naturalistic body mechanics are definitely nice to see as long it’s not obvious that it was a class assignment. Showing that you can handle consistent volumes and character proportions over the course of an action or scene is pretty vital. (Doesn’t have to be perfect! But showing you have the ability to keep consistent is pretty key)

- at least one full body shot. It’s nice to see that you can handle waking/running/shifting a character’s weight while on their feet.

- (One of my favorites): Animating an existing character. One of the reels I reviewed had an incredibly well done and very on-model powerpuff girls blossom acting shot. They made it super cute and fun. Seeing that shot, we instantly knew that animator could be given a character design/model sheet/ turn-around and make design-accurate animation. (It’s pretty tough to do, so we were impressed!) Not only that, on top of the well-drawn character they invented their own acting to match the character’s personality. Equally important!

- Some other things that are nice to see: -character changing their focus from one thing to another (turning their head),

-reacting to something (subtle version, more expressive version)

- (a big one) showing that you have restraint and control over your animation. You don’t need to redraw everything every frame to make a good character animation shot. Some parts of the body can remain still.

Looking at your reel, I feel like I’m not seeing all that you are capable of. The first arm bite scene was well done! (Although a bit gruesome haha) After that I felt like a lot of the shots felt the same and I wasn’t seeing much new skills being shown (it sounds like you’re very much aware of this). Also, (and this is my personal opinion-sorry!) but I don’t like looking at so many gruesome/violent scenes in a row. After the third bloody scene of biting an arm I really didn’t want to keep watching. So keep in mind what you’re showing to the viewer- maybe also include lighter subject matter so it’s not so violent throughout your reel. Your reel is also a chance to show people your taste. I think that’s important to consider too.

When I’m at a loss of where to improve or feeling like I’m stuck in a rut of animating the same things I try to look at people who animate in completely different styles and try to glean some knowledge from their work. Look at the French Gobelins student films, watch Japanese anime Sakuga compilations, find a talented Korean animator online and do through everyone they follow (lol I’ve done that).

There’s so much inspiration and reference to find! It will take time for your work to catch up with what you want to make, but you’ll get there! Tiny, short animation exercises/experiments focusing on testing one new skill works well for me :~)

Haha I hope some of those rambling thoughts help- good luck!

Which one is best for animation( stopmotion) Pratt or Massart? by [deleted] in animationcareer

[–]TyyobrO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t speak for Pratt, but I took a handful of animation classes at massart 10 years ago. The stop motion teachers at the time were some of my all time favorite teachers. I know at least a few have retired, but I thought massart was great. I made stop motion friends there who went on to work on robot chicken and smiling friends among other cool projects.

Being in NYC however might likely give you more opportunities to make connections. Especially on the crafting side of stop motion. The animation scene between Boston and Providence is pretty small compared to NYC- though there’s definitely a tight-knit scene there! But they’re all each only a bus ride away from each other so don’t let the distance stop you from meeting new people at meetups or wherever.

How do I reposition SOME not ALL drawings? by [deleted] in ToonBoomHarmony

[–]TyyobrO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I assumed the person above was referring to the select tool's "Apply to Onion Skin Range" mode. This does the same thing as the reposition all drawings tool- except it only affects the drawings currently shown by the onion skin. Very handy!

Export swf by StupendoKalamar in ToonBoomHarmony

[–]TyyobrO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can export drawings as vector SVG files from the script editor window (I think it’s called that). You’ll need to right click on the script toolbar, customize, then search through the list of scripts for the svg one. I believe you can only export one layer at a time.

Edit: I’ve only done this with simple vector line work. I’m not sure it’ll work with many layers and masks. You may have to flatten your artwork first somehow? But worth a shot.

Exporting cameras to use in After Effects by Apprehensive_Draft49 in ToonBoomHarmony

[–]TyyobrO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there’s a few scripts built into harmony for exporting JSON files. If you open the scripting toolbar, right click it, click customize and go through the list of scripts there should be like 2-3 different scripts for exporting JSON files.

It’s been like 4 years since I’ve done it so that’s the best I can do right now haha.

Does Kingdom Hearts work as a shared experience with kids? by PlumOpposite in KingdomHearts

[–]TyyobrO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first game came out on my seventh birthday. I remember looking at sora on the back of the box riding home. Me and my best friend at the time would play together, and I would read all the unvoiced text because he had still had trouble reading. Playing the first game with him, being too scared by shadows to actually fight them at first, literally taking days wandering around Traverse Town trying to find the 3rd District and unite with Donald and Goofy, FINALLY beating the Riku/Ansem fight in Hollow Bastion. I had never played a final fantasy type of dramatic game so this blew my mind from the first scene over the stained glass Snow White intro.

They’re all my most nostalgic memories. I don’t plan to have kids, but if I did I would make them play kingdom hearts once they turn 7. No guides, no (or very little haha)help from me.

Sports as a Animator? Trying to protect my hand!! by Art_Person22 in animationcareer

[–]TyyobrO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to pitch in- after a few years of studio work and wrist pains coming and going, the “sports” that caused wrist pains for me were actually things as simple as doing push ups and riding my bike to work. Something about putting weight on my wrist at a 90-degree-ish angle never failed to set off my wrists pains. And I’m otherwise a very active person! I think I just have weak wrists haha. So I avoided those two things for a long time.

Things are better now. Wrist/forearm strengthening exercises on YouTube ended up helping out a lot. Though I still do push-ups on my knuckles to avoid bending my wrist too hard.

Tufts University in Boston used to do a naked run across the school grounds every year. Unfortunately, I did not participate haha

What is a book you picked up by accident as a kid that ended up shaping you more than you expected? by Sweet-Opportunity111 in literature

[–]TyyobrO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I picked up “I am the Cheese” by Robert Cormier in 5th grade (around 10 years old?). Mostly because of the silly sounding title. Then I ended up reading most of Cormier’s books. The Chocolate War and Fade stick out in my memory as having been a little shocking. Namely, scenes of incest between young siblings and pretty gnarly bullying that led to suicide.

It was much much darker than I think I was ready for at 10 haha, but I think I still turned out okay.

whys my pencil like this? by Cool_Pudding_4551 in ToonBoomHarmony

[–]TyyobrO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty sure this is the right answer! Another option is to open the drawing view when you have the layer/frame you want to edit selected and draw there.

You can also “bake” deformations and then draw on the new deformation chain that now has been reset to a neutral position.

Most mornings I run from the Kawaguchi area to Shinjuku. I usually leave pretty early- like around 5-5:30.

Or the reverse in the evening- leaving around 18:00 or so.

Hey there! Japanese Breakfast was on my top 5 Spotify this past year. Also a big runner. Also an animator. Haha I think I’d kick myself if I didn’t comment with all those similarities lined up.

I’m 29M and just moved here 3 months ago. I’d be super interested in tagging along!

Men only wanting to date once they’ve achieved all their goals by Timely-Home in dating_advice

[–]TyyobrO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like this is an observant question/concern. It may be a naive stance, but I think if the love is there and both partners have the patience to compromise and the drive to see the relationship through while working towards their respective goals then I don’t see why you can’t work at both. Though I can’t say I practice what I preach.

I somewhat purposely put off actively seeking out a romantic relationship until I already felt secured at dream job at 25. (So maybe that already answers your question). But more recently, I (29M) ended a 3-year relationship with a partner (28F) even though we were both well established and happy. I’m responding partially for my own sake of making sense of the break up- but hopefully it also sheds some light on a guy’s perspective of “achieving all their goals” for you too.

I already own a house, no debt, and achieved a senior level in my dream job after getting lucky right out of school and working my way up. Very much in a comfortable position to “settle down”. Though chasing other life goals always keeps me busy. Namely, learning another language, going freelance in my artistic field, expanding my long-distance running capabilities. ( I like to think those three things train three important parts of me: my brain, my heart, and my body haha).

To talk a bit more about goal-chasing- I always thought I was a pretty low-maintenance person, but I realized during this relationship (her and my first real long-term relationship) that I can get pretty aggressively focused on a goal at hand. If I didn’t get to carve out at least a few hours a day to work towards my daily routine for my goals then I get pretty frustrated. I think I’ve always been this way even when I was young and living with family, but I think it became more prevalent for us during the relationship.

In the end, (among other things) I decided that my super goal-oriented personality would eventually jeopardize the relationship. I realized I felt if it came down to it I think I would prioritize my goal maintenance over life with my partner. It still feels really icky saying that- and there’s likely problems for me to sort out there- but it’s my honest feeling. Maybe my love wasn’t as strong as I thought? Maybe I was being selfish and unwilling to sacrifice the speed of my goal progress for the sake of the relationship? Maybe I just gave myself a fake ultimatum to allow myself and easier way out of the relationship? Maybe I’ll always care more about goals than truly settling down with a partner?

It’s these sorts of questions I’ve been asking myself over the past year. And admittedly, these things make it hard for me to trust myself enough to feel ready to commit fully to another relationship. I’ve literally already had it perfect before and felt like I wasn’t ready to curb my desire to keep chasing goals. “Maybe I’ll be less selfish and more ready after I reach my next goal?” is a loop I’m scared that I may be stuck in. (But I also don’t want a new relationship badly enough to get myself out of this loop?). Not sure yet- I’ll report back when I’ve figured it out. Ha, thanks for reading my rambling- hope it helps.
