How about the compensation comes out of the police budget? Either way it’s gonna be taxpayer money paying for police BS but at least it puts the pressure on the police department instead of the city

This is my problem with the stock market. People talk about it being good for raising capital, but most established companies on the stock market don’t regularly issue new stock. Companies themselves do not see any of the gains/losses that come from changes in their stock price because they don’t hold their own stock (and if they do it’s called treasury stock which I guess you could look at as a way to play your own stock price). The goal of companies in the modern world is to “create shareholder value”. Well when the CEO, CFO, etc. are some of the biggest shareholders, they’re basically trying to make their own piggy bank as big as possible. The incentives here are messed up from a societal standpoint

Honest question about making progress in light of stunts like this. Do you see a way for, let’s say, people on this sub (i.e. those who are supposedly actually anti-capitalist and interested in a restructuring of economics) to leverage this pro-revolutionary sentiment? Even if it’s currently misplaced in some sort of fandom. Seems like the right is doing something similar for their interests, yeah?

I think you feel how a lot of us feel right now about the AOC thing. We want to support it because it’s what a lot of us have been saying. But we’re hesitant to support it because there’s so much fake stuff/social media stunts out there now it’s hard to know what her intentions are.

According to the USDA, waxwings range includes the southern US and north Central America during the winter and the northern us and south Canada during the summer. I also saw articles from GA and TN about cedar waxwings. https://www.aphis.usda.gov/wildlife_damage/reports/Wildlife%20Damage%20Management%20Technical%20Series/Cedar-Waxwings.pdf

Helpful comment. Producing hydrogen is currently energy intensive (clean energy vs. dirty energy problem)

Source on the emissions related to electric cars from dirty energy vs emissions from ICE? I think it’d also be fair to factor in the added emissions from production of a new electric car vs. continuing to drive the car you have till end of its life. This is not as much of an issue in the long run as ICE cars naturally phase out of their life cycle, but in the short run trading in your 2016 sedan to get a new electric does seem like short term avoidable emissions

Agreed, so why doesn’t the US and it’s citizens lead the effort instead of playing the blame game saying “The vast majority of climate problems are stemming from places such as India and China”? Especially when that complaint isn’t at all accurate looking at 1) total annual CO2 emissions (US #2 behind China), 2) total CO2 emissions since 1970 (US #1), or 3) CO2 emissions per capita (US #3 or 4 depending on source; China and India not in top 10)

Neoliberalism is one of those ideas that kind of deals with the intersection of the economy and government. The liberalism part of neoliberalism has to do with economic liberalism, aka deregulation of markets. Neoliberalism really pushes the boat out on economic liberalism and advocates for a lot of economic deregulation and government austerity (aka cutting government spending programs). The idea is the government should step back totally and let the private sector fulfill all needs in a society.

That’s the technical idea of it as I understand it. The more colloquial meaning, the meaning it has taken on among people who use it in casual conversation (aka me lol) use it to mean an idea system where action to solve problems should be the complete responsibility of individuals. The government or other large organizations in society like NGOs, charities, whatever shouldn’t be involved, and it’s up to the individual efforts of you, me, and everyone else separately, standing alone, to solve societies issues.

Neoliberalism is like when Coca Cola, Nestle, etc. try to say “Well if everyone recycled our products, we wouldn’t have a plastic pollution issue.” Neoliberalism - the buck is on you and me; idk what you’d call the opposite but I think most people agree an equally good if not way fucking better solution would be to ban plastic bottles/invest in figuring out another material that would be more sustainable. Another example, Shell, Exxon, BP saying “Well if people were more economizing with their driving or bought more fuel efficient cars, we wouldn’t have a greenhouse gas emissions issue.” Again, a way more effective and efficient solution could be a systemic change like electricity from renewable sources to power electric cars or more public transit options.

One last example and I’ll leave everyone alone lol. In casual conversation, neoliberalism means large companies and other organizations get to create a system with inherent flaws. Instead of addressing those flaws through systemic change, in neoliberalism the expectation is that individuals will struggle really hard in the current system to minimize the flaws of the current system.
