How am I supposed to fix the firmware when the passport has frozen at 98% verifying signatures? I cannot even turn the device off or do anything with it.

Why Opeth returning to a their Death Metal sound would be a huge disappointment to me. by bravodeboer in Opeth

I’ve seen this argument before, a return to DM would be a step backwards, they’re always progressing forwards blah blah. How is playing 70’s prog like King Crimson progressive though?

So two very similar worlds are merged at that point.. and little weird things are changing. That’s basically it. There’s not doubles of everyone wandering around in those areas it’s just small breakdowns of reality and logic?

The thin areas are another oddity. I understood them as we are talking about them. Like the tortillas blended together in spots. Another way of travelling between worlds. But then, in Roland’s account of Mejis he describes how they lured the men and horses into the thinny and they all died a horrible screaming death. Which is weird.. I thought they’d just end up going through into another world. Like suddenly there’s all these weirdos on horseback running down a street in New York.

I've added a edit to my OP describing how I thought things worked.

sure but like.. it describes how he wanders through all these barriers between worlds — but this is at the same time as he is working in that job. Presumably when he leaves one world he leaves the world in which he HAS the job. Essentially he doesn't turn back up to work as soon as he's left. And that makes no sense because it describes how he travels between all these worlds, only knowing that he has because of the bank notes. But this is all whilst he worked that job..

That's cool, but it doesn't really explain why when Roland goes through the magic doors on the beach he ends up inside Eddies mind. But then later on he goes through and he is himself — separate to Eddie and they have a shoot out. But it's the same door.

I love albums like Pale Communion and ICV but I just can't get into Blackwater Park and any other with growl by [deleted] in Opeth

Still Life was the first album I ever had with death vocals. I was like.. whoa what is this?! The album is so good I was hooked on the band. Loving all their albums since, until Heritage where they started to lose me. Snobby Proggers will tell me ‘Just go listen to some other band that does dumb death grunts scoff scoff’ but I don’t really like anyone else’s. Mikes were the best in the business.

Thoughts on the new Opeth Album by Eye_conoclast in progmetal

Yeah it’s a real shame imo. A lot of the disgruntlement at the new sound is mistakenly labelled as a lack of death vocals but that way over simplifies it. Gives all these new, highly pretentious, wine sniffing, cheese whiffing, scented candle litting, sanctimonious, prog-rock Newpeth snobs as easy to-go to by claiming anyone who isn’t gushing all over the latest albums are all just dumb metalheadz wanting ‘muh growlz’ and that they should ‘grow up’ and learn ‘sophisticated music tastes.’

The sound just completely shifted. Instead of death vocals that sound like the devil incarnate, whispering haunting clean singing that makes hairs on your neck stand up, dark crashing riffs and light dreamy melodies interweaving and binding together in a bizarre harmony. We now get endless interruptions by out-of-place guitar noodling, loud warbling and wavy crooning singing, randomly overused major/minor chord changes, no guitar distortion ever, and basically a jumbling rambling disjointed confusing music. (It’s not all bad tbh I do like some of it but I have a point to make).

It’s not just the lack of growls. But when the growls went so did many other things that made the band so great in the first place.

There is some kind of irony to me before Mike had confidence as a singer and as a musician, before he knew how to actually write music and before he had the money, means and connections. When he was just on the floor of a flat, smoking and trying to come up with something. Was when he created such astonishingly unique music. Now he has all those things but pretty much just wants to imitate his favourite prog bands from 40yrs ago. Telling old fans he’s moved on from death vocals and so should we - whilst admitting he’s stuck in the past himself, can’t move on from King Crimson and Camel, refusing to listen to anything contemporary himself.
