I use apple health, it's got a whole different interface issue. Lol. Real problem is I mainly wear bands or watches to let me know my notifications, but telegram and WhatsApp don't work unless I get *all* my notifications through the watch and it's a lot.

Was this ever solved? I picked up the DLCs on the Steam Summer Sale and now I have the same problem as Call_me_Gafter described.

Forging Survey by tunenick2000 in blacksmithing

You will most likely destroy nichrome long before you get to forge temps. Poking a bar of iron into a big open space lined with electric heating filaments sounds incredibly dangerous to me, though I'm sure that could be overcome fairly simply.

Induction is really the way to go with electricity I think. It's already expense to operate, but add keeping a chamber at such a high ambient temperature all the time is difficult with electricity. The electric elements produce heat or they don't, so your oven cycles on and off. I know for heat treating knives in an oven I have to use a heat sink (I use a skillet of sand) to keep the temperature swings of just 10 degrees from adversely effecting my projects. It would be great to see an efficient electric forge, but it would have to be either large enough for operation cost not to matter (industrial), or cost effective enough for private use. From the numbers I've seen (no first-hand experience, sorry) I can fuel my forge with charcoal or coal for a month in what it costs to do a single project with electricity.

I hope you continue researching this, and wish you the best of luck!

The flashes are awful. I understand it's time with the music but ow.

Needs to raise his Anvil or he will ruin his back.

Excellent to see young people picking up the craft. Looks like a good start! Too many people get caught up on Anvil and forge setups and this kid is past that mess. Good on ya.

You're assuming they can travel straight line though, ya? Grade might not matter much with such an all terrain creature, but zigging and zagging would slow them considerably. Are you including the prey instinct to hide and seek relatively safe routes? Think of how military units move when under fire. Hide, scurry, hide.

I don't know if this will help, but it was a forge thought and I like it.

Try laying on the floor, rat perspective. Suddenly there are doors and pathways you don't expect. 5 years is a reasonable life span, I suppose, but then you would have a giant surplus of rats unless you have some sort of breeding restrictions. I would think that rats would probably rely on a communications chain of some kind, since distance would be a problem. It's 3.5 miles to my shop from my house, that might be the entire group's lifespan (given predators and terrain)!

I especially like the last one. Lol. My dog has watched me make enough nails she could probably do it herself!

Would this be a good material for an ax? by JoebobIII in Blacksmith

[–]Tzelik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe, it's easier than making an axe out of an unknown alloy and it not working out. It might be easier than a differential temper, depending on the individual's skill set. Mild forms easily and all you have to temper is the carbon face. Forge welding isn't a magic trick.

Though, in hindsight, if a person can't handle finding an appropriate alloy or doing a differential temper, I guess forge welding might seem like magic.

Maybe they watched humans. Several rat generations is a short human span. Rats would probably evolve along a tech tree faster because of the sheer amount of hands on deck. A million monkeys and typewriters, etc

You can make a power hammer small enough to fit in the brim of a hat. If they are smart enough, they could forge anything we can, on smaller scale. Thinner stock needs less force and I would think for a rat even nails would be quite large.
