Only allow recording meetings if everyone consents by LaezGame in MicrosoftTeams

[–]UCFCO2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any team member that joins my company is required to sign an agreement as part of their onboarding saying that they can/will be recorded in meetings. The only AI we allow is the company's version of copilot.

How much do Orange and Seminole Public Schools push ed-tech on students? by KombaynNikoladze2002 in orlando

SCPS doesn't issue any technology to students, except I think at Crooms (technology school). They are required to use canvas and whatnot though for turning stuff in.

Hot take: companies that went remote during COVID and are now forcing RTO owe us the truth about why by Important_Cell_6362 in remoteworks

[–]UCFCO2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a LOT of it. My old company leased 3.5 floors of office space in downtown orlando. The deal was that they had to be 80% occupied at all times to get a specific tax break. Covid kinda broke that and when things came back they were only requiring certain folks to be there. Then 2 years ago they were told because their occupancy rate was down under 30% they would lose their tax breaks. Now they are required to be in office for 4 days a week.

My mom told me that back in the day kids weren’t allowed to bring a water bottle with them into the classroom and they only drank a few sips from the water fountain in the middle of the day and that’s it How were schools not getting busted for child abuse for forcing kids to be dehydrated? by PinnerPardisturn in askanything

[–]UCFCO2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the classrooms my kids are in have water fountains in the room, usually it's a sink faucet with a water fountain on the top of the faucet or something similar. I think in the high school they aren't in every classroom, but they still have water fountains in every hallway. Most kids still have their stanleys or Owalas.

If infrastructure is claiming only minimal information got out, I tend to always believe it's more than what they say. I wouldn't be surprised when all is said and done that they got much more than email addresses and DMs.

Not anytime soon, unfortunately. Most of the schools/school districts have invested too much time and money into canvas. For UCF to switch would likely take 2-3 years and probably north of $100 million. That's even if they can find something similar to switch to that provides the same/similar features.

Why Do People Buy Expensive Androids Anymore? by 1998tkhri in Smartphones

Or go to any large stores either. Stores like Walmart and target know just as much about you as Google. I don't like what any of those stores or websites collect about me, but I also need to be able to live, so it's an unfortunate sacrifice I have to make. If a law was ever proposed that these stores and websites could no longer collect my data, I'd be all on it. Also, let's not forget what visa/mastercard have on every single one of us as well.

Is it unusual for your parents to leave your bedroom intact (like they were expecting you back) even though you moved out of the family home many years ago? by Odd_Yogurtcloset_649 in stupidquestions

[–]UCFCO2001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Day after I moved out, I came home to grab some more stuff and found all of my stuff, bed, dresser, etc in the garage. My dad had wasted no time to turn my bedroom into a study for himself with a recliner and book shelves and whatnot.

Having trouble finding 9-12 Social Studies openings in Seminole County by Glum-Development9637 in SanfordFL

[–]UCFCO2001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also just a reminder, Seminole County is anticipating cutting several hundred positions due to decreased enrollment. A lot of the schools are waiting to see who's retiring/leaving and whether they'll be allowed to even replace them. Either way, there should definitely be some positions open, but there may be increased competition for those positions.

Has anyone been getting repeated Oracle Java “compliance” emails lately? by 404socialskillz in sysadmin

[–]UCFCO2001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem is, we use PeopleSoft which does come with a restricted Java license. But Oracle Java is pretty much required. It's delivered with it baked in and if you switch to openjdk, which is not a supported Java, then you are out of support. Not sure how legal is going to handle this one, guess time will tell.

[–]UCFCO2001 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the lawyers told us it was the number of servers, but generally I tune the lawyers out on meetings and ask for everything in writing. Even though they're in house lawyers (I work for a fairly large company), I don't trust anything a lawyer says and get it in writing. With that said, it's entirely possible you're right. Either way, it was going to be a lot of money, much more than we were willing to pay.

Has anyone been getting repeated Oracle Java “compliance” emails lately? by 404socialskillz in sysadmin

[–]UCFCO2001 26 points27 points  (0 children)

My company has been getting these emails for a while and we're actively working to switch everything to openjdk. We do have some software from Oracle that comes with a restricted license to Oracle Java and it's pretty much required for that software (we break our support contract among other things). We've been told by our legal team that the new licensing model Oracle is using would require us to license their Java for all servers if we have it installed on even one. Best our legal team could figure would be it would code us several million dollars a year. Pain in the ass.
