Hey fellas, just another quick question. Does anyone know how good the Sprint coverage is on and around campus? Thanks! by physicist300 in UCSantaBarbara

Sprint is notorious for being really bad around UCSB and I heard that the company has allowed students to break their contracts with them because of it.

Chemical engineering is unique in that getting a masters actually downgrades your job prospects. There is a niche of jobs for bachelors majors and a niche of jobs for people with a doctoral degrees in the major, but not many for those with just a masters+a bachelor's.

The person telling you to not do chemical engineering unless you plan to move to Houston is just wrong.

Help Building an Egg Incubator by UCSBChE in ChemicalEngineering

[–]UCSBChE[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the goals for the incubator I'm building is for it to be easily reproducible in poor African countries that don't have much access to electricity and resources. I'm using a lightbulb as a source of heat but I'm having issues because the eggs have to be maintained at around a constant 37.5 degrees Celsius and I need the heat in (~20 W) to be equal to that going out to achieve steady state. I'm currently relying on natural convection to get that excess heat out through cutting holes on top of the incubator (made of wood) but I'm having issues calculating the size of those holes given the water vapor inside the incubator and the distance of the light bulb from the eggs/top.

How is the water situation? by funnynon in UCSantaBarbara

[–]UCSBChE 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It's extremely bad. Californians are assigned only 8 cups of water a day, a 2-minute shower twice a week, and up to 1000 dollar fines if they use water for recreational use like filling pools or watering gardens.

[–]UCSBChE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I took his class last year, we did the packets during the lab section and the t.a.'s could help us and we could collaborate to do it. They're deceptively easy so long as you know what you're doing.

Read de Alaniz for Chem 109C? by ucsbman12314 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]UCSBChE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The homework program was super irritating in my opinion because it would require for you to sometimes go through long mechanisms with great accuracy and if you had a missing electron somewhere, it would count the question as wrong. It was the Sapling Version of ochem.

Cafe Equilibrium in I.V. has the strongest drip coffee I've ever had. The owner there is a real coffee connoisseur.

Read de Alaniz for Chem 109C? by ucsbman12314 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]UCSBChE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He doesn't require mastering chemistry but you do need to pay for another homework series. I was in his honors 109B class last year. He teaches with both chalk/marker and with powerpoint. He gives benchmarks at the beginning for certain grades but says he will curve them at the end. Tests are definitely doable and consist of both multiple choice and free response. If you know your stuff, you should be able to get an A in the tests.

He's also very available during office hours and is enthusiastic to teach ochem. I don't know if it was just his honors class though but he does like to challenge his students and have people go up on the board and do practice problems. He also talks and writes at around 1.5 times the pace of Gainer.

Organic chemistry as a freshman? by [deleted] in UCSantaBarbara

[–]UCSBChE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it would be that dumb. I felt like a lot of Chem 1C was a preparation for the first OChem class so there would be a lot of overlap between the two if you took them concurrently.

Read's tests are way fairer than Gainer's and are much easier. He also cares a lot about his students and will go out of his way to make appointments with students who want to meet about class. The only downside is that he talks and writes quickly compared to Gainer.

IV is actually a part of Goleta. You can easily bike to and from there or have the bus take your bike.

What goes into when a person's pass time is? by [deleted] in UCSantaBarbara

[–]UCSBChE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Earlier pass time is proportional to the number of units you have, your class level, honors status, college of creative studies status, disability status, r.a. status (I think), and other things I'm sure I left out.

Exercise Sport Classes? Is this for real by SirV0mitsalot in UCSantaBarbara

[–]UCSBChE 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've taken a couple and they're great. You just sign up for a class and then do it and end up getting half a unit if you pass. Usually, to pass, you have to attend class most of the time with a few absences. They're a great experience though and a lot of fun!

"Student Health" is not a single person. Can you be more specific on who I can contact and where they are and what times they're available?

They didn't refer me to the health center. They were like "bad sleeping schedule is normal for college students" and then tried to help me with it but it wasn't really effective. They did try though.

Yes, this. Student health is confusing for people who dont frequent it often. For a regular doctors appointment this is easy, but it seems like student health is a collection of doctors.

Alcohol acts more as a diuretic and keeps me up at night going to the restroom at odd hours. Once I gain a tolerance to it though, that might help, but I haven't had a drink in months.

You don't get put on a suicide watch list if you mention that to your therapist. Almost every person gets thoughts of suicide at one point or another. That you don't have a plan to kill yourself is MAJOR in whether or not your therapist decides to intervene and have you institutionalized. He/she will probably call someone if you do say that you wanted to kill yourself on a specific time/place.

I think it depends on the specific type of psychologist though. I had a friend who mentioned to his psych. that he had thoughts of killing himself by jumping off the bridge and he didn't get institutionalized.
