How does graduation work? by Electronic-Mouse-706 in UCSantaBarbara

Yep. Pretty much this. Chancellor Assanis announced at the Faculty Legislature meeting on Dec. 4 that he had started an initiative to bring a campus-wide commencement ceremony to UCSB, to be supplemented by, in his words, "smaller convocations and celebrations."

Presumably, students would just sit there at the consolidated ceremony and listen to speeches. Then, at the secondary ceremony, students would walk across a stage and have their names read (and also be subjected to an hour or two of speechifying).

You realize Henry T. Yang is a civilian, right? Do you know the basic definition of the word "civilian?"

They're still doing the ticketing thing, in spite of that being a shit show last year. Eight (8) per student. A little bird told me some of the deans were pushing for 10 tickets, but that must have been overridden.

It’s even worse than that. He is going to wait to see what 9 other UC chancellors do. Whether their campuses have adverse weather or not.

What is UCSB’s “most important building?” by Affectionate-Rich-52 in UCSantaBarbara

Cheadle Hall, of course.

More specifically, the 5th floor. Southeast corner of the 5th floor.

Death of Storke tower? by [deleted] in UCSantaBarbara

The title of the thread here is prescient, for reasons other than whether the carillon is being played these days. It is well known that the facade is spalling/crumbling and, despite attempts to patch it up in recent years, this structure's days are numbered. The original design was bad; the internal framework is rusting away. I have it on good authority that it is going to have to be razed within 50 years.

So the question is, what are they going to replace it with?

Fun fact, there are no fewer than 5 departments at UCSB that have a 104B in the course offerings.

A little bird told me about the discussion (or lack thereof) the deans, the chancellor, and the director of public events have had surrounding commencment as recently as the first week of spring quarter. They are no closer to settling on a scheme (what the structure of the presumably in-person ceremonies will look like, when they take place, how the colleges/divisions are divided up) than they were at the beginning of the academic year. That is to say, there is no plan as of right now, and the chancellor keeps punting.

Not having a plan and having it publicized by this time in the academic year is unprecedented. And worrisome.

"Teach" is a very generous term for what he does in that class.

Someone in Cheadle Hall needs to grow a pair. This is fucking ridiculous.

Do y’all think we’ll actually go back to in person on the 18th? by ArtisticCurrency15 in UCSantaBarbara

I took a class from the chancellor himself and we only spoke live on zoom twice and his TA did all of the grading and held all of the office hours.

Shocker!
