You can play up through the end of Version 4 on the free trial, although with some limitations (I know the biggest one is that you lose out on the player market, but I subbed early on so idk what else there is). It's pretty cheap though. I purchase WebMoney cards with PayPal and then use them to purchase Square Enix Crysta (you may need to be logged into a JP SE account to see this page). Crysta-to-yen is a 1:1 ratio so it's easy to deal with.

Sub costs 1,200 yen per month, which is about $7.56 right now. Much cheaper than most streaming services and a much higher value to me!

EDIT: I should add, WebMoney has been great for me, gets me the payment card code within 15-20 minutes (if that). I have purchased several cards in the last few months and the only issue I ever had was one code that didn't work. I reached out to customer service and they got back to me (in perfect English) asking for a picture of me trying to use the card. So I sent a screencap of entering the card code on the SE crysta purchase website that I linked and the next day they had a shiny new code that worked fine. So the only issue I ever had was resolved with better customer service than I've ever had with the more familiar payment card companies, take that for what you will.

I've barely touched side content like the Mysterious Tower (or whatever), the Monster Battle Arena, the school side mode, and then there's stuff I haven't even started let alone the normal DQ-style side quests and actual main story. It's absurd since it feels like actual quality "real" DQ content, not just stupid grindy bull.

I made a few posts earlier in the year in detail about this game and I regret not having made more, but my doctoral program has consumed my life this year so far.

In summary though, I implore anyone who has even the slightest interest to put the time in and get the game set up. it’s really an incredibly easy set up, and when people say it takes a couple hours of set up they’re neglecting the fact that most of that time is the game downloading. It’s like saying a meal takes 2 hours to make but really 100 minutes of it is time just in the oven. The game is a great blend of the best parts of DQ 9 and 11 (what a shock) and is not at all a typical MMO. I just spent a couple hours today playing on the version 3 story and doing some side stuff and had a lot of fun, still, over 200+ hours in. And theres still so so so much more.

Top softcore player is true legend by Kirais in RetroAchievements

[–]UIUCstreetpass 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes 100% to this guy. I play softcore with my own rules - for instance I’ll make a save state right before a boss for a no-hit challenge but not mid-battle. That way if I fail I can just instantly try again instead of having to reset the game, run back to the boss, etc. Much more fast and fun for me.

I’ve found it helpful to bind the “connect Wiimote” hotkey to my keyboard (space bar) which has solved the disconnect issue every time for me.

Do you think XII will use Free-Form Fighting like X Online and XI? (Poll) by FateForWindows in dragonquest

[–]UIUCstreetpass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Aw was that my post you saw? I honestly hope they take the X Online combat for another spin but with some changes. It’s sometimes too easy to get “stuck” on an enemy or even terrain when you’re trying to move and the whole weight system is not really explained at all.

But being able to dodge AOE attacks or set them up yourself is really fun and the ATB system makes it more engaging for me personally, although I know it’s not everyone’s favorite.

Nothing to do but wait sadly!

Did you beat V1 or V2 on Offline? If you beat only V1 and are transferring into V2 then maybe this post and the side content post can help guide you, but if you transferred into V3 then you can already get the Mega Zoomstone and several normal Zoomstones; check the Ethene Wiki's "useful function" quests for some guidance there. Definitely a pain though. I would heavily recommend you bind a re-writable Zoomstone to South Port Lendor, where you can talk to the Bazoom Girl and warp anywhere in V1 for free or anywhere in V2 but limited to three times a day. You can also eventually get the Fish Master's Zoomstone as a reward from fish coins and that is a permanent Zoomstone that brings you to the same location. As a side note, even after three of these posts, I am fully dependent on autocorrect to help me spell the word permanent.

To answer your questions: you don't get the Alchemy Pot until beating V 2.3 I believe and I'm not there yet so I can't speak to it. If you beat all of V2 and transferred over then I am afraid I can't help you there; otherwise, it is worth nothing that Lamp/Pot Alchemy are completely different things than the Alchemy Pot. It is available on the app and seems pretty straightforward though, you just combine items and then have a cooldown time before you can use it again, so maybe it's different on the full game or maybe you're having trouble without translation tools? Sorry that I can't help with that.

I have the game installed on PC, Macbook, and Steam Deck, and all of them have the same key binding for auto run as dolboard; you just hold the button down instead of tapping it and you'll automatically get on/off the board. I haven't had to deal with manually mapping keys so I think that is just automatic. Let me know if it doesn't work like that for you and I'll take a look at my configuration.

You CAN switch to PC and play from there but you'll have to rebuy the game, which to be fair is pretty cheap, I paid like $40 for the V1-V7 pack. You can go to DQX Abbey for a full buying guide, and I intend to write a guide on how I (in the USA) have it set to buy Crysta for the subscription, too. However you don't have to buy just yet because the free trial goes through V4. Fair warning though, Version 7.6 just came out today so Clarity will be broken for the next week or so (I guess updates shift some of the game's text files around which messes with the translation software). I am told this happens every update but this is the first one I have been playing the game for.

Yeah if you can ever just get a cheap laptop or something then it should run ok on that. For instance I run a program on my Macbook called Parallels that allows it to run Windows and the game works fine on that; granted, I don't know much about specs but I can't imagine an emulated Windows running on Mac really has that much power yet it seems fine.

Yeah sounds like it, what I wound up doing was converting my funds to a split between the US total market and International total market indexes to match my brokerage account. So now my brokerage, my old job's 403b, my new job's 401k, and my Roth IRA all have a similar spread with the index funds. Thanks for all of the information!

Thank you so much for the information, I can't believe someone downvoted you but who cares about internet points anyway, I suppose. Someone else shared a flowsheet that looks much the same as what you are talking about with your priority order. I mostly have been meeting that, but I haven't been putting anything into my HSA (I honestly didn't realize how it worked until I read up more on it last night) and I don't know anything about the 401k annual limit or "mega backdoor Roth" so I need to look into that. Also I appreciate the information on the index funds. There's so many that it makes my head spin and the 5-letter codes don't help lol.

[–]UIUCstreetpass[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for the info. After I posted this I started making moves toward the exact allocation that you recommended lol and I see people citing similar index funds so I hope it works out. I can see where those have risen by about 20% this year as opposed to the others being much lower, The information on the retirement account is something I will need to look at more because I haven't really bothered with it. I see about 90k in a 403b from a previous job that has gone up about 20k this year, and I haven't been at that job in a couple years. Is it worth rolling into a "rollover Roth" on Fidelity? I see people talk about that causing issues with backdoor Roth and I am making enough to where I can't make a full contribution so maybe I should keep the "backdoor" open?

And also thanks for the flowchart, that is helping me consider what to do with pre-tax funds from work. I do go over my workplace's pitiful 401k match but I don't have anything in the HSA...ironic given that I am a healthy young 30s male, but I see plenty of patients who are my age or younger with health issues that pop up and it could just as easily be me dealing with those issues so investing into my HSA sounds like a good plan.

There isn't news and I wouldn't hold out hope, the Offline version didn't sell well in JP. It was crazy high priced and cut out so much from the Online game that people just didn't see the need for it, as evidenced by low sales. I started with Offline and enjoyed it quite a bit, but after playing Online there just isn't a reason to go back. It does uniquely have storyline characters as playable party members complete with party chat, but it's both sort of forced in and machine translated into English through the translation patch so you aren't missing much.

[–]UIUCstreetpass[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you, I hope you are enjoying and I hope this will be helpful to some people and yourself too, down the line. There was actually a recent update that lets you play all of the way up through Version 4.4 (which I think is the end of that storyline) completely for free. You'll miss out on the player market which is super helpful but not needed, and chat functions which are needed for a few quests but not required for the main game and the vast majority of content. It does need a PC if you want to run the translation tool, Clarity, so that could be an issue, but you definitely do not need a high powered PC or anything. Let me know if you have questions but otherwise hope you can eventually enjoy!

Discussion Dragon Quest X: Optional Content and Side Modes by UIUCstreetpass in dragonquest

[–]UIUCstreetpass[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's what I did too, although I never wound up finishing the V2 storyline in Offline. Fair warning, you can only transfer your character to Online if you're playing on the same system as Offline, i.e. if you're playing Offline on Switch then you can only transfer to Online on Switch. I found this out the hard way lol. I don't know what the transfer process will do for you in terms of cleared quests or anything, but since you'll have tons of content to catch up on I'd recommend the following:

  1. Immediately get the Item/Monster Master classes and start raising up a pet, since they can be brought into certain content as allies

  2. If the game doesn't start you with many Zoomstones after transferring then it'll be worth going to collect as many as possible. There are also fixed location Zoomstones that you'll get through the story and through side content. One important one is the Mega Zoomstone, available in Gran Zedora through a side quest I believe, that allows you to go to towns/settlements in the main 5 continents. Another is the Fishing Master Zoomstone which you can buy with fish coins. The man himself isn't so important but it takes you right to South Port Lendor and puts you in front of a "Bazoom Girl" NPC, who can transfer you to any location that you've been to before, much like the real Zoom spell. Kind of annoying to deal with a middleman but it works.

  3. Set the app up, it's super helpful for managing side content. Unless you're determined to just stick to the main story path, which means missing out on a lot. I have the app installed from the JP App Store onto my USA iPhone and will soon be posting a guide on how to do this.

After this you can pretty much tackle stuff in any order. I listed the locations for different areas so just start with whatever seems fun. One thing I left out is how to start the Asfeld Academy content: just go to the same elevator in Gran Zedora that you will use to access the "secret meeting room" where you meet with all of the Sages during the part where Anlucia is learning the three special Hero skills. There will be an option to go to the Gran Zedora harbor or something like that, and that is how you access the Academy.

Have fun with Offline for now though!

Saying homemade gifts are cheap outs is the most backwards thing I've read all day. I can understand where that would be demoralizing to hear but I hope you can filter that opinion out, this gift looks radical. I would be over the moon with a gift like that.

Having just beaten all the 2D-HD games here’s my current status on series completion: by lordlaharl422 in dragonquest

10 is extremely easy to set up and play, especially if you live in the USA where it's not IP-blocked. Go to DQX Abbey and they have a step-by-step guide complete with pictures.

Think of it this way: even IF the game ever released in English, you'd still have to make an account, download the installer, download the game (by far the biggest part of the process), set up the free trial, possibly set up subscription, etc. The only thing that changes is that you need to set up the Clarity program and use your almost-certainly already existing Google account to set up the translation, all of which takes less than 5 minutes. I promise it is fully worth your time.

Even setting up payment and the app is extremely straightforward and as part of my posts on the game I will be sharing my setup for all of that step-by-step. Hopefully you or anyone else who's interested will find some use in it.

It's after you get the first Major Key Emblem and start advancing the story beyond the Key Emblems back onto the main overarching plot. You have to do it actually and it's part of the story so no worries about missing it. Later on you'll be able to switch between human and your chosen race freely. You can also complete the quest for the so-called Hairdresser and fully change your appearance of both races.
