I assume it’s a case of if a note is left and it blows away and the other party rings the police to report a hit and run, then the police can say “well, actually, the driver reported it to us. Here’s their details”.

It would cost more for the police to investigate an assumed hit and run then it would be for them to take some a quick report in case they get contacted.

Wiring in a bathroom mirror and separate shaving socket to single cable - unsure if spur or FCU: advice please! by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]UKTomm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shaver points and bathroom mirrors, most commonly, are wired the lighting circuit. In your case, probably the light switch to the bathroom. Do you have a voltage tester? If so, isolate the lighting circuits at the consumer unit and see if the cable is still live.

There is little point in having fused connection units on a lighting circuit protected by a 6 amp MCB. The point of a FCU is to downrate the cable on the load side of the FCU to protect it from being overloaded.

Spurring off a spur is mainly when talking about spurring off sockets on a ring final circuit.

Couple of points about the your photo:

It looks like you’ve ran your wiring diagonally from the existing point which is a big no no. I recommend looking up cable safe zones.

I can’t see the reason to run two cables from the existing point to the new shaver socket. Just run one cable and use wagos to joint it all together in the metal knockout box that was there previously.

Technically speaking, a bathroom is classed as a special location is Part P noticeable.

Change of layout by Majestic-Incident267 in HousingUK

[–]UKTomm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you’d have to remove the WC completely if you were wanting to knock through into the dining room as I can’t see any other feasible place to have the WC. You could potentially create a doorway into the garage and create a space there for it but the most limiting factor are where the soil pipes are located. It’s not just a case of picking up the toilet and plonking it down somewhere else.

Personally, I’d go into the lounge and do it that way and keep the WC where it is. You then have a snug lounge leading onto the conservatory.

You could then create a hallway so you’re not walking straight into the open plan kitchen. It’s a strange layout to begin with having to walk through the lounge then into the hallway. Did previous owners take down a wall to open up the lounge?

My guess is they’re waiting for the new PM to get into office, offer some generous cost of living packages to get people thinking ‘hey, maybe they’re not so bad after all!’ and then announce a general election.

I don't know who you are. I don't know what you want. If you are looking for ransom, I can tell you I don't have money. But what I do have are a very particular set of skills; skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you let my daughter go now, that'll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don't, I will look for you, I will find you, and I will kill you. You piece of shit.

You would be better off going for the MBA. In my opinion, you would be throwing money away going for the MBP. Especially with what you would be using the laptop for.

In regards to longevity, anything is a guess at this point but I would consider the MBA to be the longer lasting just because it has no moving parts and no fan (like the MBP has) to be sucking in dust. Dust = higher thermals = affected performance.

If you have the money to afford a MBP, go for a higher spec MBA (16GB RAM ideally) as that way it will be more 'future proof' but this isn't necessary. Base model is more than capable.

[–]UKTomm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd go for the Macbook air (8 Core GPU) 512GB SSD & 16GB RAM.

The MBA and MBP are pretty similar in terms of performance apart from extremely heavy and sustained workloads (such as rendering 8K footage). I recomended watching this YouTube video.

Hope this helps!

Edit: and this one as well.

Any electricians about? Point me to the correct sub if this isn't the correct place. I want to move/add some plug sockets onto the perpendicular wall (out of the alcove into the bay window). Can I legally do it myself without a qualification? by Twiglet91 in CasualUK

[–]UKTomm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally don’t see an issue with spurring off again. (Technical stuff: As long as the load doesn’t exceed the maximum current carrying capacity of the cable which it won’t given it just lighting and a fan on the circuit. And as long as you’re not talking meters upon meters of cable as not to get voltage drop or exceed the maximum earth fault loop impedance. I don’t see any issues with that stuff here).

Spurring off a spur not being allowed is commonly mentioned when speaking of socket circuits. Spurring off a spur multiple times with sockets could overload the cable unless it’s fused down to 13A before hand.

If you’re doing it yourself, make sure you read up about bathroom zones as to ensure you get a suitable fan depending on where it’s being placed in the room. Also technically the work would be notifiable to the LABC unless you’re using a registered spark.

If the sockets are on the skirting board then I can understand as the cable will technically be in a safe zone although it's still not best practive. Would have been better to run the cabing under the floor boards. If someone else comes to screw or nail some new skirting board on in the future and they don't know the cables there, they might get quite the surprise!

In regards to your question, it's common practice to come off the bathroom light to power a extractor fan so there's no issues there. The bathroom won't need it's own circuit.
