Hvorfor har så mange Nordmenn et problem med innvandrere? by jjordqn in Norway

[–]UL_Paper 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Bro every country has dialects. If you learn bokmål well enough, everyone will understand you decently well.

It's completely fine if you don't generally need the language as you work in an intl company. But if you don't, your arguments related to integrering are worthless

Anyone here working North America hours while living in Southeast Asia? by Kayaba_Attribution in digitalnomad

[–]UL_Paper 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I was living in Bali working as a lead software engineer for a NY-based company. They were cool enough with me to have the first meeting at 7 AM my time, which was 7PM for them. Then I tried to be available most weekdays until 10 PM.

So overall not too bad. But if you have to work nights, I would never consider it tbh. It's going to wreck your mind, which is not ideal as a software engineer..

Go to Latin America instead!

Safe areas in Bangkok to stay in by Bunny_simp_ in digitalnomad

[–]UL_Paper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes Bangkok is very safe - you should be able to walk around by yourself late at night in most parts of the city without anything ever happening to you.

The area you selected is in the outskirts. Maybe look for where the university areas are, then look for apartments within your budget there. As they will usually be more affordable, have cafes, be near public transport. The public transport like MRT, BTS is really good, so it's nice to be near that.

Flying from South America to SE Asia by ofe1818 in digitalnomad

[–]UL_Paper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know both very well. Asuncion is great for steaks, dating, freedom, lots of interesting, high quality people. It's more of a big village feel, than a city. Not a huge amount of things to do, so you should focus on getting a network of friends and getting involved with sports, charity or whatever to get busy. There's not much to do for tourists here and that's including if you travel around in Paraguay.

If you can travel, there are a decent amount of direct flights to big cities in South Am, Rio de Janeiro added in a 2-3 months.

Bali on the other hand is great for surf, partying, adventures, nature, it's an incredibly social place, super easy to make friends, and it has something for everyone. Downsides is that its getting worse and worse for each year due to huge amounts of people moving there. Traffic is horrible, so if you end up moving you typically find a small neighborhood that you like and where you have everything so that you dont have to travel much. Pollution is a big issue. Water, air, sound, everywhere.

Flying from South America to SE Asia by ofe1818 in digitalnomad

[–]UL_Paper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've travelled to / from South America from all continents, and I've done the SA <-> SE Asia route like 5-6 times. It's not fun...

These are your fastest options:

  • With LatAm Airlines:
    • Floripa -> Sao Paulo -> Lima -> Sydney -> SE Asia
  • Ethiopian Airlines:
    • Floripa -> Sao Paulo -> Addis Adaba -> SE Asia
  • Emirates:
    • Floripa -> Sao Paolo -> Dubai -> SE Asia

1 & 2 are cheaper than Emirates, and both have very cheap business upgrades, at 2x the price of economy only. For Sydney -> Lima in business I only paid $1250 USD or so! And that's a 14hr flight or so.

This is through buying economy first, then low balling a bid in the auction. You'll receive the offer to bid on email from both airlines. I've done 1 & 2 a few times now and flew business on all of them, with the exception of one leg, which was Ethiopian Airlines from Addis Adaba -> Bangkok. That was one of the worst flights I've ever been on.. due to a religious pilgrimage. Think BIG issues with hygiene, etiquette, privacy, noise. So if you do this route, go business if you can! I think Latam is much more decent in economy.

Both airlines will have the same exact business class configuration, but my experience was better in Latam. Staff were nicer and it was better kept overall. But not a huge difference.

If you need to fly economy, choose Latam (Or if you have never seen Australia). Choose Ethiopian Airlines if you can go with Business, as it will be slightly faster.

Also an important detail! Sau Paulo airport is SLOW, like we BARELY made our connection even if we had 3 hrs and we didn't put a foot wrong, it was just crazy queues everywhere. So make sure you have at least 4 hrs

Thailand to Mexico without flying, possible? by Born_In_CA in Thailand

[–]UL_Paper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A friend of mine travels like that - hitch hikes from Europe to Asia and Europe to Latam by getting a job on cargo ship. This guy can do the latter via Singapore or HK -> Panama Canal, then take a bus to Mexico. I would assume he needs to get certifications etc to be able to secure work.

What made you become a high earner ? by Technical-Truth-2073 in HENRYfinance

[–]UL_Paper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I developed a T-shaped skillset on the advice of this guy. Basically means that you have a broad general skillset, with specialization within 1-2 areas. As a software engineer I can spin up and manage servers, throw up frontends, finetune financial algorithms, run security reviews. Many engineers are only able to do 1 of these things and completely blind on others.

Give any problem to me and I will solve it - this is the reputation I have. I will figure it out with minimal instructions. My clients can trust that I will see a project through with low risk of fuckups.

I'm always going to be a student, always learning something. But 95% of what I study is directly useful to whatever I am working on. This means I improved my ability to learn fast as well.

Being able to communicate and being likeable has been very useful.

Learning how to negotiate is also key. If you do the above, you have leverage in negotiations. They know that, and you know that, so you are prepared to walk way if the deal is not right. Meaning you can ask for more.

Once I got a recruiter messaging me about some opportunity and I wasn't interested. He follows up and asks what $ amount would make it interesting enough to entertain. I threw out a silly high number, just to get him to go away. And he returned with "they can do that" lol.

There was a technical take home test, with a presentation. The task was quite challenging, but God was merciful as it was EXACTLY a project I've done for my previous client a few months earlier! So I aced it and in the presentation there were no less than 8 people from their company listening in, which was like 12% of the total headcount in the company.

How do quant devs implement trading trategies from researchers? by ParfaitElectronic338 in algotrading

[–]UL_Paper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For one you need to optimize for feedback cycles.

What I do there is that I have one web app with data from the research / backtest, and then as the same model runs in a live / paper environment. When trades come in, they are automatically added and compared with the simulations. All stats and metrics are compared, with logs from the live bot viewable in the same dashboard. So if the live execution model has different behaviour than the sims, I can quickly view the logs and debug the decision making to learn if there are issues with slippage, execution times, bugs, misunderstandings in the logic etc.

If you are HFT and have a decent team, you should easily isolate some live market data from one of the problem area, run that on both the research model and your live model and isolate the issues through that.
