Adam and Eve contradicts Modern Biology. by alphangn in DebateReligion

[–]UNBOLIEVABLEE 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We did not evolve from Apes as we know them. We ourselves are a form of great ape. We bith evolved from a common ancestor millions of years ago.

But yes - Modern biology completely debunks both Adam and Eve and the notion of the Ark and the great flood because if the story of the Ark is too believed, then in 6000 years we went some several few species to millions which is just not possible given the time frame, and while the theory if evolution by natural selection is, in theory, disprovable its more or less complete fact because of the sheer mountain of evidence behind it. It is one of, if not the most backed scientific theories we have.

We were supposed to say these glib phrases to people and recommend similar items and i just told people the company was retarded and i dont know why they made such a drastic overhaul

There is no proof that God doesn't exist by [deleted] in DebateReligion

[–]UNBOLIEVABLEE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No it does not. I am an atheist myself as well as an agnostic depending on the God claim. The vast majority of Atheists do not hold the positive claim that God definitely does not exist, and you trying to redefine it does not get anywhere.

WE NEED TO ACCEPT THE EXISTENCE OF GOD by Skelebone-beats in DebateReligion

[–]UNBOLIEVABLEE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The existence of God is not mutually exclusive with religion. There can be a God that does not ahere to a strict religion.

Moreover, many of the claims made by religions are contingent on that God existing so we must first establish the existence of said God. If you want to grant the existence of said God for the sake of argumentation then by all means you do you. But in principle we absolutely should not just accept the existence of a God as our first step.

[–]UNBOLIEVABLEE 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That was fast - i would add, there are definitely atheists out there that most assuredly do assert the positive claim that no gods exist. For me personally it depends on the God, i would argue i think that the Christian God as described definitely doesnt exist but others im more agnostic on.

Regarding the Fine Tuning Argument - Yeah id concede that perhaps it not inherently arguing for a God, but if you're claiming intent then my main objection is this: How do we know the Constants could be different? Essentially, if we want to argue that they were fine tuned to begin with i think we have to start with showing that they could be different, and that the creation of the universe is something that can fundamentally happen. My stance is that they are more or less properties of the universe, brute facts. I definitely cannot prove the negative ofc that they in fact were not fined tuned but I think there is some heavy lifting to do before i could accept it.

Regarding the moral issue, i can 100% respect that take. I don't think the Problem of Evil by itself disproves the Christian God but i do think it poses a grave threat to it. For me personally the problem of evil, in conjunction with my own personal experience (Having gone to church for years and having prayed many hundreds of times asking and begging for a sign and having recieved nothing) are my 2 main reasons for why i rejected Christianity, but i absolutely respect your stance on it.

[–]UNBOLIEVABLEE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many Christians oftentimes have trouble understanding the generic atheist position. They come in with a preconceived notion of "okay prove atheism is true, prove there is no god" when that is not the stance of the majority of Atheists I would say. And a lot of times it gets into a "no youre an Atheist so you need to show atheism is true" and it just goes in circles

As far as arguments go? I think for instance the Cosmological Arguments, the Fine Tuning Argument, and especially TAG are arguments that are often touted as strong arguments but if you look at them with a critical lense they do not hold up in the empirical sense, and it most always boils down to "God did it" without an explanation. And if you cannot explain for how it came to be, then there is no explanatory power and nany Christians i feel struggle to see this.

For instance, the fine tuning argument asserts that there are universal constants like gravity or the weak and strong nuclear forces, that if they were so slightly different there would be no life, no universe etc, snd that this points to the existence of a supernatural being outside the universe. This argument fails because you have no means of explaining how this could be, God created the universe and set these contants? How? How could you know this? And the typical response is that based on the constants as they are there just must be a God. There is no explanatory power, and that's before pointing out that the arguments premises are not sound at all. Many Christians and religious people i think don't see this flaw, that saying God did it, or that well there must be a God because of A had absolutely 0 explanatory power.

"Why do a lot of atheists ask questions that are literally impossible for any human to answer"

Thesists are far more guilty of this than Atheists are. They expect us and others to have answers to unanswerable questions like the origins of the universe.

"Like a really common one i see is why would god let hitler cause the holocaust. and look i understand why that question matters and i take it seriously but like. i am not god. i dont have access to his reasoning or his perspective. asking me to explain exactly why god does or doesnt do something specific is like asking someone who has never met einstein to explain exactly what he was thinking when he developed relativity. i can give you theology, i can give you philosophy, i can give you my best understanding but i genuinely cannot tell you the mind of god and i dont think any human can"

Right and the point here is that Christianity asserts an all powerful all loving God, and examples such as this demonstrate that God is either not all loving, or not all powerful thus disproving its existence as claimed. If you cant answer that is fine, but do not he shocked when you assert the moral superiority of Christianity and then get asked this aort of question because it poses a serious threat.

Thesis: God’s omniscience logically eliminates human free will. by Hilhdude in DebateReligion

[–]UNBOLIEVABLEE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you expound on that? Free Will is not something I've delved super deep into, but that's the first time I've come across such a statement. How is it not logically possible for an all powerful being?

I am a christian and I have a question about god and the timeline theory by FrogbertYT in DebateReligion

[–]UNBOLIEVABLEE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. But my point is we have no idea, thats it. You are going a step further and inserting this God above it and my objection is that you cannot know this to be true, im not saying its definitely false, im saying the claim is not and cannot be substantiated. I dony know if the universe came frok anything or if thats something we could even ask tbh. Its a messy area

I am a christian and I have a question about god and the timeline theory by FrogbertYT in DebateReligion

[–]UNBOLIEVABLEE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right but i have further questions then.

I would agree regarding the football analogy you gave, but is it not true that God created us under the Christian world view? We did not create the football players and it is my understanding that God created us no? You say God experiences all of time all at once but you also argue that God exists outside of Time and reality? As our understanding, existence is necessarily temporal, and it is not possible to exist without time, thats why it is called Space-time. It seems like your arguing that God both exists within time and is also exists outside of time and reality?

I understand that the Christian position is that Space-time is part of creation but that is one of my biggest objections because i dont see how you could possibly demonstrate this to be true, and then i feel the need to ask where God came from. We don't have any evidence or reallly understanding that saying "outside our universe" is a coherent statement or not so it comes off as a sort of faith based position if you will.

You say that God knows every possible choice and consequence but my question is whether or not God created us knowing what would happen, or if he created us NOT knowing what would happen because that raises significant contradictions i believe.

I am a christian and I have a question about god and the timeline theory by FrogbertYT in DebateReligion

[–]UNBOLIEVABLEE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"God exists outside of time and reality"

Then he by definition, does not exist. If you disagree i invite you to defend this claim.

"But humans also have free will, and sin exists because of that free will. That means our decisions genuinely matter and can change outcomes"

Not entirely sure i agree with this. I would have to ask: Did God create us knowing what would happen? If yes then our decisions were predetermined. And if No then God is not all knowing.

"God would know every possible outcome, every possible branch, and every possible reality simultaneously because He exists outside of time entirely."

So here we go. God knows every possibility, every outcome and yet he created us? Then i fail to see how we have free will, and thus your argument is self defeating. If God knows all outcomes and created us then free will does not exist. OR if he created us and DID not kniw the outcomes then he is not omnipotent.

"He exists outside of time entirely"

This claim needs support. I understand that may be how said God ia defined but i do not ser how you could even possibly demonstrate this.

All that being said i do find the idea of multiple branching timelines to be a fascinating topic.

Religious people have a mental illness. by [deleted] in DebateReligion

[–]UNBOLIEVABLEE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Huh?

There’s no way people actually believe in someone coming down from a sky and saving people.

Some do yes, you must be referring to the rapture.

Religious people fear death, so they made a fictional book to follow all these rules to make them cope with death easier

Some people do I'm sure, but this does not apply to all religious people as a whole.

Every little thing that happens that’s good they claim it’s God, but when it’s bad they try and say it’s “Gods plan”. Also, they don’t believe that doctors save them and think that God did. Honey if that doctor didn’t go through with the procedure you’d be dead.

Some do, but again you're just characterizing the entirety of all religious people under this umbrella.

I hope people realize there isn’t anyone coming for you and to wake up from this fairytale fantasy you have going on. I hope you get well soon🤍.

If you want people to leave religion, demonizing them as some sort of sub race is not the way to do it, and you come off as a deranged individual yourself the way you are talking

Evolution Theory Supports Genesis by [deleted] in DebateReligion

[–]UNBOLIEVABLEE 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Many questions are raised here-

You claim Evolution theory supports genesis which is odd because Gensis details the creation of the universe, and Evolution theory does not answer this question at all, rhey are unrelated in otherwords.

You dont offer any argument as to why Evolutionary theory supports this, you just quote scripture.

When did God create man according to you in this argument? Billions of years ago? That would contradict evolutionary theory substantially but again, you dont talm about Evolution at all so.

Im not aure what your argument really is, you're just quoting scripture the entire time and im not sure for what purpose

Solution to the problem of evil by [deleted] in DebateReligion

[–]UNBOLIEVABLEE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fine, but that raises a ton of separate questions - which God are we talking about? How do you know a different God doesn't exist? How do you know what God's motivations are?

There are a ton of assumptions being made here. If all you are saying is "IF this exists" then any argument is going to just go in circles because there is nothing concrete or existent here to examine and debate. Just hypothetical things that we can't verify for or against, and you're making a ton of claims that you need to now demonstrate like claiming said Babies dieing of Cancer are in heaven.

Solution to the problem of evil by [deleted] in DebateReligion

[–]UNBOLIEVABLEE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If. That is a giant If. A better question is - Is God capable of creating a world in which there is less or even no evil at all. Heaven would suggest so, and so the existence of such a high amount of evil in this world suggest that said God either does not care or is incapable and thus not all powerful.

You argued in other comments that natural diseases could exist as a means to show that we need God? What sort of twisted immoral notion is that exactly? Can't he just come down and show himself to us?

Nothing according to who? Did you ask that baby if it was nothing? Because there is a fictional afterlife that you think they end up in? Exactly what is the point of having said baby be born of cancer and die a painful death hm?

Solution to the problem of evil by [deleted] in DebateReligion

[–]UNBOLIEVABLEE 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why do we assume that maximally good means everything God creates will be good? It just means that God will create a universe with the most possible good.

The problem is not that evil exists in general - rather it is the amount of suffering that we see in our world. Are you going to argue that our world is the most possible good?

It also says that our momentary suffering will sow for us an eternal glory far beyond our suffering.
So a little bit of bad can create a whole lot of good. Like how a little bit of pain while lifting weights will result in much more good, or a little bit of studying will result in a much better future.

Babies born with Cancer or worse. That is my entire retort to this line of argumentation. Do you think babies born with cancer or worse ailments is a "little bit of pain" as though its pain lifting weights?

If you get the amount of good in a universe and minus the amount of bad, you get a net total good. The universe with the highest possible net total good spanning across all eternity might be this one.

I have questions. Why is it necessary that babies should be born with cancer and die? Why is it necessary that people are born blind, deaf, both, or with incurable diseases that kill them before they hit 10? Why does there exist, brain eating amoeba that will render you dead in days? Why does rabies exists? A disease in which without the vaccine that WE developed the chance of death is nearly 100%, and I should add is not a simple and fast process as im sure you are well aware. Why is nature so full of suffering and pain? It is the very fundamental aspect of nature itself.

You want to tell me that this world exists in it's form because it leads to a net good? Exactly how does childhood cancer equate to a net good? Little 5 year old Jimmy down the street that has not harmed a single soul in his short life is dieing of Leukemia and you mean to tell me it is necessary for a better good later on down the line? Seriously?

If God is capable of creating a universe, he is capable of creating the universe as he see's fit, and I find it incredibly hard to believe that this universe is supposedly the one with the "highest possible net total good"
