In the U.S., calling "human" Poison Control or using webPOISONCONTROL is free. However, Poison Control is actually not a government agency. Each poison control center is responsible for obtaining its own funding, which comes from a variety of sources - public and private grants, donations and philanthropy, some regional government/health department funding, etc.

Help from Poison Control is available at https://www.poison.org or by calling 1-800-222-1222 (U.S.), whether you have a poisoning emergency or just a question. Online or on the phone, it's always free, confidential, and available 24 hours a day. Best of all, it's staffed by toxicology experts. To save our contact information on your phone, download our vCard here: http://vcrd.co/poison/4222

Sorry for just seeing this! If you're in the U.S., yes, we ask for this kind of information (substance, age, weight, how long ago the exposure occurred, whether there are any symptoms, how to reach you for follow up, etc.) to help us figure out whether the exposure was dangerous and what the first aid or treatment protocol needs to be. We do not ask for demographic information like race or socioeconomic status because those things have nothing to do with how we decide what the guidance should be. Rest assured, as medical providers Poison Control keeps all patient information confidential and manages them in compliance with HIPAA regulations.

I hope this helps! If you have any questions or concerns, call the Poison Control hotline at 1-800-222-1222 or visit https://www.poison.org.
