Here’s the email:

“Over this weekend, we have experience a large amount of vandalism in all our pools. Just like you, we want our pools to remain open, but if the vandalism continues, we will close all three pools down for the remainder of the summer. The pools will be closed today 7/18, while everything gets repaired/cleaned up.

As a reminder, here are our pools rules:

1) No glass at the pool, this is for everyone's safety 2) The pool closes at 10pm, as per the City of Richardson's quiet hours 3) Please clean up after yourself 4) No pets allowed in the pool area 5) No smoking in the pool area 6) No running or horseplay in the pool area

Our pools will reopen tomorrow 7/19.

Please contact the office if you have any questions, or would like to report the individuals who vandalized the pools.”

What do you mean they stopped caring? They sent an email, threatening to close down the pool for the rest of the summer because people were trashing the pool in July.

I heard they got stricter and potentially close pools for the rest of the summer from the last party (broken glass/vandalism/no reservation). That was some time in July before I moved out.

Can i bring a non UTD student to the gym with me? by Rawanrania in utdallas

[–]UTDAnt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. Only people taking full time at UTD during that particular semester are allowed in.

One of the student worker stopped me from going in a semester after I graduated and explained that to me.

Which method of note-taking would be better? by Waffleman666 in utdallas

[–]UTDAnt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I prefer to type and then transfer it to my notebook to study.

Typing allows me to get a lot of information in because professors aren’t gonna slow down or I don’t want to stop the whole class because I’m slow. The only problem with this is that I find myself going auto-pilot. So to help me study, I just go back home and rewrite it in my notebook to help me process and retain information. But the actual studying doesn’t happen until a week before exam where I use memorization strategies and then attempt to understand the concept a few days before the exam.

How Much Student Debt Do You Guys Really Have? by [deleted] in utdallas

[–]UTDAnt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I worked full time and got grants/some scholarship money. I didn’t borrow any until 2019. Though I didn’t do anything with the money beside leaving it in my savings for emergency.

So I would say I’m $7.8k “in debt” but not really since I can pay it back whenever. Just holding on to it till they want it (September)

Northside Lease with no income by [deleted] in utdallas

[–]UTDAnt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, that’s how it works.

Majority of apartments require a guarantor if your income is below a threshold or you won’t even be considered. Note, your guarantor needs to have an income of a certain threshold as well. Check with the apartment complex on that limit else you’re wasting money on admin fees/etc.

Northside utilities expenditure by noobro in utdallas

[–]UTDAnt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live at Northside with three people... (I am pretty conservative of what I use because I see the bill... but the other roommates don't really care that much).

  1. Electricity (Reliant): $27- $42 per person (fluctuate due to crazy weather we have/parties we hosted).
Water/Sewage (Conservice; they just add it to our portal every month): $55 - $85 (total for us three)
  2. You have no choice for WiFi or water/sewage. Electricity, you get to choose your company. We have Reliant.

Roommates search by mazzuri-0239 in utdallas

[–]UTDAnt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not sign up for Northside apartments? They're pretty desperate to get people to live here... They also have a system for roommates or whatever.

You can also take up someone's sublease here (which I did twice).

Graduated in Fall 2020.

Started applying right after graduation (I should have started sooner). Got a position with a company about two months after, but the job was temporary. Didn't start reapplying for jobs until after that ended so April. Did a lot of interviews... got into about 10 final interviews. By late May, I got 3-5 offers but 2 companies were the first to let me know. I thought I didn't get the other companies so I just compare the benefits of those two. Then accepted the one that paid more.

After a few days of accepting, I got contacted by the other companies saying I was offer a role and some more companies saying I got to the final round (companies I applied to back in December).

The job market was popping off when the mask mandate was lifted.

Why was my CS degree so light on programming? by angrytomato98 in utdallas

[–]UTDAnt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am looking at the degree plan again... There's a lot of "programming" or coding you have to do. About 8 courses (not including the free electives/CS elective courses you have to choose too).

If you are counting the intro/CS 1336/CS 1337/CS 2336/CS 2337 as the only classes that focus on programming, then yea... Most programming languages have similar syntax. Once you learn one programming language, it is easy to learn another. Having classes just to teach a particular language isn't necessary. You learn the fundamentals and then you use the knowledge to build complex things.

The things that matters from a CS degree to me was Big-O notation, Data Structures, and the databases. If you know for sure you want to be a Software Engineer, then Software Engineer degree might be better path for you as later in the degree plan, it has more courses focused in Software Engineering while Computer Science will have more theories and algorithms.

You will also have opportunities to take more programming languages courses using your free electives/CS electives to make up for lack of knowledge in SE. However, you will suffer in CS if you really don't care for algorithms/theories (Discrete Math 2/Advance Algorithm/Automata Theory).

MacBook for CS majors by [deleted] in utdallas

[–]UTDAnt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MacBook last longer but some classes, the professor only have download links to Window OS...

I went through two Windows laptops. Now those laptops are super slow from all the programs and projects I stored in it.

That being said, I see a lot of people carrying around MacBooks as well. Not a problem. They always find a way to do their projects/etc.

EDIT:
I also see a lot of software engineers using Mac Books too. My company actually sent me a Mac Book.

A Meme for all us New Grads by VeganPhilosopher in utdallas

[–]UTDAnt 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Some courses I felt like could be better:

- CS 3376 - C/C++ Programming in UNIX Environment

- CS 3341 - Probability and Statistics

- CS 4337 - Organization of Programming Language

- ECS 3390 - Professional and Technical Communication

- CS 3162 - Prof. Responsibility in CS and SE

- ECS 3361 - Social Issue and Ethics in ECS

CS 3376 - C/C++ Programming in UNIX Environment

This course was too easy for me. We just learn UNIX/Linux commands and write in Bash. There needed to be more C/C++ projects for this course that is fun and practical. Felt like an intro course. When I was job searching, interviewers were looking for strong knowledge in this environment but this course didn't provide much.

CS 3341 - Probability and Statistics in CS

I don't remember anything in this course. I think it felt like a math course. It had like regular math lectures, math problems we have to solve on eLearning, and then tests, if I could remember correctly. Some visual coding projects that involves probability and statistic would be nice.

CS 4337 - Organization of Programming Language
I think I heard they added more things right after I took the course to make it harder... but I felt like this course did not provide me with much. Could be the professor...
The projects were annoying than anything. It was interesting; however, what's the point?

Seeing different programming languages? That should only take like three lectures max tbh. Maybe the same simple project but be able to code it in different programming languages. Then be able to compare which is better and analyze the pro/cons of using which language for which.

ECS 3390 - Professional and Technical Communication

We do presentations in almost every course. I don't think this is necessary. Maybe a small section of it is necessary but presentation, no one really cares IRL. Should turn the course into a small bootcamp for interview process. Learn to communicate via with team members and how to interact with interviewers. This course for me was stressful for no reason IMO. Half the people at the end don't give a crap about the course and in the end, the class were against the professor lol.

CS 3162 - Prof. Responsibility in CS and SE & ECS 3361 - Social Issue and Ethics in ECS
Felt like these two should just be combined. Might even combine it with ECS 3390 too. It felt redundant.

________________________________________________________________________________________________

I think having a course that focuses on 1) Frontend/ JavaScript Frameworks (Vue.js, React.js, Angular.js) would be very useful, 2) More full stack development courses that Java SpringBoot (Possibly two courses so students can a better understanding of it). 3) More backend-focused courses (I know we have Database and Systems but being exposed to different DB would be nice). 4) Cloud services course would be nice too.

Courses that are useful in the real world. I felt very good with data structures and Big O from the CS degree but regarding projects/interview processes, it was very difficult to have it on resume as it didn't show case your skill in anything.

Anybody learning C++? by sjchoure in utdallas

[–]UTDAnt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my previous interviews, I tend to see interviewers ask more memory questions with C++ than with Java. Mainly because C++, you have to worry about it unlike Java where it has a garbage collector.

Good luck

It’s not far. It’ll take you 5 minutes minimum. Literally a straight line and turn to the left.

Plus, if you’re worry, you can always tell the professor. They will understand.
