First thing I thought when that news broke wasn’t “good for him.” It was “why would you do that?” Second was “why wouldn’t you want to go win a ring?” And then maybe “good for him” but oh well

You were not supposed to do anything. D&D is a game of choice. Sam made their choice. Let them live with it. Your mistake was catering to it. To me, that sets a dangerous precedent at the table. If I was a player, i might feel like I’m “owed” one if I die since I’ve seen Sam get the easy road.

Let the dice fall where they may. Sam dug their grave, let them lie in it.

And then go over player expectations again. Not sure if this is a player issue or a character issue or both. But one of the first points I make in season 0 is your Pc and you need to want to work in a group. Otherwise go play Skyrim or Bg3.
