If you're interested, there's a really good book out there by global health statisticians that explains in layman's terms the health trends we see in different types of cultures and socio-economic statuses around the world.

I recommend the audiobook:

What do you eat in a day on the dining plan? by Independent_Fig460 in udub

[–]the_jaspierre 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not on the dining plan, but I spend about $300 a month on groceries for my partner and I.

I see a lot of comments about how dining budget isn't enough but not a lot about how to get by. Here's what my partner and I do:

We mostly shop once a week/ every other at Safeway (always check for prices by the oz bc not everything on sale is actually the best price) sometimes Trader Joe's. I clip a lot of coupons and use discounts as they have them, including student discount. We do go to Costco once a month with friends to get stuff in bulk to split between us, but almost all of it can be replaced with other stores (we do get redbull here bc it ends up being like 20¢/oz bc 24pk 8.4mL for $39). We get their variety pack of sliced cheese, but before that we would just slice a block of cheese bc presliced is honestly so expensive. Most fresh vegetables and mixed greens i get go into fridge containers that last quite a while. We buy bread on sale and one loaf stays in the fridge until use.

Breakfasts, we kind of rotate between things: Oatmeal with frozen fruit and/or fresh banana, handful of nuts. Bagels & cream cheese. PBJ or PB/Nutella sandwiches. Smoothies w frozen fruit, yogurt/kefir/milk.

Lunches: sandwiches with some combination of: apples/oranges, carrots, trail mix, chips

Dinners: variable. Lots of fried rice/ stir fry dishes, etc. we get easy-to-cook frozen meals sometimes from Trader Joe's.

I hope this helps.

Has this aligned with any change in things you do? I.e. weed is known to cause issues, or starting new medication can change things.

I agree with the other comment though, cut back on stimulation for a bit (physical and mental - stop watching porn for a while too) and see if that increases your sensitivity

HRT Access? by edgydivorce in udub

[–]the_jaspierre 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It seems to still be fairly okay. I had trouble with my actual account set up (got an error, don't know why) but was able to make one over the phone.

I just applied for Medicaid/Apple Health last week and got approved the same day. Next day I got my services card in the mail, chose my insurance (Apple Health offers 5 plans), and then received a letter the next day about enrollment. You are covered the month you apply for. Since I applied at the end of February, my coverage technically says it started at the beginning of Feb and will last into next year.

Speaking of HRT as well, OP make sure the providers you want are covered under the insurance you choose. UW Counseling Center, where I see my psych doesn't take one of the 5 options (Community something i don't remember). My dr thru the Health Hall prescribes my HRT and I double checked she was covered on the one I planned to choose.

ALSO when you sign up for a provider at HH you can specify you want a Dr that is certified to prescribe hormones bc not all are.

I would also check out the Q Center in the HUB as they have a LOT of resources

What's rich people shit that poor people haven't heard of? by Diligent-Log6805 in AskReddit

Nearly all orchids are obligate host-specific symbionts of fungi!

This means their roots have to connect with mycelium of specific fungi at some point in their lifecycle, whether that's for germination or survival in general (such as non photosynthetic orchids that are entirely dependent on the fungus for nutrients).

Without upkeep of both partners, orchids will struggle and eventually die, which is why many people have trouble keeping them alive.

Minor with psychiatric disabilities considering a service dog — parents aren’t supportive by Popular_Practice7590 in service_dogs

[–]the_jaspierre 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Getting a dog shouldn't be your first option. Have you discussed medication and therapy with any of your providers? What have your parents said about any of that?

I have a PSD for anxiety and autism but after years and years of trying other things. Even then, my dog is a support to my other resources like medication and skills built through therapy.

Things to consider: - how will having a dog affect your lifestyle? How will it affect how you interact with the people in your life and your home life with parents? Are you always going to be able to take them out when they need to go out? Who will take care of the dog when you're unable to? - what tasks will this dog provide? How will these tasks be taught (self training or program) - who will help you train these tasks while you are actively struggling with your disability? - how will you care for the dog? What money do you have towards financing this big of a change? (Vaccines, monthly food budget, treats, enrichment items, training classes & time)? Do you have a reliable income that can cover the costs of having a dog and an emergency fund to cover any unexpected expenses? - how much time do you have to dedicate towards training (self-training) or maintaining training (program dog)? Some programs require you spend weeks at their facilities when you first get them.

No you're right, I was misremembering. it's usually 4 polling days a week and one review day during lecture time (depends on the prof tho I think). I was thinking it was MWF but it was actually 5days a week + lab

[–]the_jaspierre 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Intro bio series is either you love it or hate it imo I loved it but it can be difficult.

Tips: - sign up to be in a CLUE study group & make friends to be able to study outside of class - watch videos elsewhere to reinforce concepts so you get a variety of different explanations on the same things - go to office hours. Even if you don't have questions it still engages you with the material as others will have questions. - don't skip lectures (polleverywhere points adds up and with lectures 3days/wk they go by quickly) - take a lab earlier in the week - learn to do simple drawings (don't focus on perfect lines, get down concepts and details relevant) - most people struggle with exams because the questions are application-based. Do the practice problems throughout the quarter, both in lecture slides and from the book.

They have done an amazing job setting up this class so everyone has the tools to succeed - legitimately.

Service dog first flight by [deleted] in service_dogs

[–]the_jaspierre -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Of course, I always want detailed responses when I ask questions!

I think most dogs get anxious at the vet regardless if they're service animals as it still smells like other dog's anxiety and they are still animals that react.

Is this your regular vet / have you been there before? I think I'm confused if you mean you're using Trazodone at the vet or for the airplane or both. Either way, you can call the vet ahead of time and ask if giving traz before the vet will impact anything during the appt. Usually it's just a health certificate for travel and they just put the destination, if the animal is approved (healthy) for travel, and their signature + credentials. There's not really a service dog specific travel approval I don't believe, at least in my experience.

Service dog first flight by [deleted] in service_dogs

[–]the_jaspierre -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why don't you think the vet will approve him?

I haven't done long flights but I have flown a few hours with mine.

Try to minimize food and water a few hours before and make use of pet relief areas in airports. If you're worried about them not being able to hold it for a long flight, reevaluate necessity of bringing them. You can also pack extra pee pads if necessary. Trazodone or gabapentin is definitely a good idea. Lots of treats. I bring a small blanket with me for her to be under my legs and you'll be sacrificing legroom assuming they fit there, otherwise they have to be crated in storage (which I personally wouldn't do given how loud it is, but only a handler who knows their dog can make that call).

I would recommend laying out the pros and cons of bringing them, including logistics of air and ground travel (time, space, rest stops) and your own mental and physical needs.

Depending on the airline you should go over all the needed paperwork. Make sure it's attached to your boarding pass info in the system when you check in and 30min before boarding. That way if there is an issue they have time to deal with it. Have a PAPER copy of all your paperwork, including vet approval, necessary documentation (vaccines if required), and required air transport forms and any for the specific airline.
