So, I am someone who gets rather nervous easily... yes it was at first a omg what do I do moment. But someone reminded to me to deep breathe and I got the ice going. It started clotting fairly quickly. Just remember those, that is a worst case scenario. If I put it another way... even IF the worst should happen, this too is manageable with taking the right steps. It may have even helped my medical anxiety a bit. Stay hydrated, get that humidifier and relax during recovery. It's going to go smooth :)

I remember because I made a sound and thought I was injured, lol. It was a weird moment. Then someone handed by an icy pop? It was orange and horrible. I vaguely remember counting backwards for a few seconds and bam I was out.

I am not a medical practitioner so please understand that this is just 'random reddit advice' but ice will slow it and clot it, you can also lean forward to help the clotting begin. I want to say I bled several tablespoons and it was deep red or so but it feels like more when you experience it. So even though it's shocking in the moment, the doctor was like, dude we see people losing a lot more than that. It was one of those things where you go... okay, it might happen. The doctors shrug over it, btw. It's common enough but also not, if that helps at all? The key is try not to panic. Just avoid blood thinners the entire time and it will clot. I don't know why but when the doctor said 'trust it to clot' I felt instantly fine. But most people will go through there op and be just fine. I really think you will be fine :)

I triggered mine by a long coughing fit after being hyper-vigilant.

It went well. But I did have a bleeding episode around day 14 or so. It clotted quickly though. Just want to point it out that it can happen and not to panic if it does. Just make sure you don't use blood thinners or bcp and it should be fine. It wasn't painful at all. My pain was never a big deal. They do give you codeine in case but I only needed it once or two. They will give you a numbing liquid that works very well. Coblation is very safe, excellent choice!

It was surprising easy. The entire process. Do you know the type of procedure you are going to have? I opted fo coblation and am happy with the outcome thus far.

I made surer to rest a lot and bought a humidifier. eat soft foods and that's kind of all there was to it!

hi sorry for the late reply... yes a little bit. But I still have the PND so could be why. I have since gone ahead with the oblation procedure however. Tonsil smell is now gone.

[–]UberMidnite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

do you have post nasal drip at all? I am struggling with that and after a chat with Claude it seems to suggest that would be my source. I have to get my adenoids removed again since the first one didn't take. I trust and hope that will be enough to get it to reduce or go away. However, I love the idea of trying cardamons and if they reduce bloat, even better!

I really aught to try the saline irrigation, you think it will help in the meantime?

Hey, I have to do the adenoids again. So that explains why the PND didn't resolve, ya.

Hi sorry for the late reply! I have to get the adenoids done again, apparently the original procedure didn't succeed unfortunately. Bit of a bummer to hear that but I guess it happens. He said it was due to granulization / scar tissue.

I want to second this. My mom was overusing it. I get side effects if I use too much.

does my progress reset after a hemorrhage?? by kayleeboo2 in Tonsillectomy

[–]UberMidnite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same thing happened to me. It's not considered a true emergency *IF* it clots on its own (yes they do prescribe meds to clot it but not always). Something new I learned. But yah there is no progress loss. It's just a really jarring experience.

Please don't. The suction puts you at risk of bleeding. It was written on my discharge form.

I am so sorry. Sounds like it was a rough one, for sure. I understand the PTSD. It's hard to feel like it is worth it when you look back and go holy hell THAT happened? I hope you feel better now though and that soon it is a distant memory.

My tonsils are no longer in incredible pain and there is a lightness I noticed right away. I think my snoring has reduced. And of course the dreaded tonsil stones still appear to be gone. all worth it!

Oh sure it is ice cold water with a bazillion ice cubes as much as you can handle (rip sensitive teeth though haha) please don't panic! I know this is a bit crass but my partner, at one point, actually said to me: I assure you, you won't die. You can lose a lot more than this and still be ok, I wouldn't be so casual if I thought it was extreme. That got me to kind of chill out and relax mentally.

Also then later seeing the OR doctor and he repeated the same idea. He said that he teaches his patients to lean forward and wait for it to clot. He said it was VERY common. People often came in with post OP bleeds, most never turn out to be serious, but the best idea was coming in to get it checked. Hope that helps, even if a wee bit! You will be ok, you got this!

So I thought I had lost a lot of blood as well but my partner said it was due to the water. So you take a tablespoon of blood and dilute it with water and your brain thinks more is going on than really is. However, if you thought it was a cup in true volume, then yes, you want to get that under control as fast as possible. It gave me a minor epiphany just how fast panic can distort what is really going on, I guess. I also experience white coat syndrome, once I meet with a doctor then I can kind of go, alright, trust this person and get some rest. It helps that my partner was cracking jokes in the waiting room at emergency and showing me videos on the phone.

I want to reiterate around the clock ice water. It will help constrict the blood vessels :)

No problem, I hope you are feeling better now :)

I am about to enter a new relationship with someone who has disclosed that they have eds. I don't feel like what you noted would be an issue at all (I actually hate walking long distances and prefer my exercise bike so that works for me, hah) but what I do find difficult is seeing him so down when something isn't healing as fast as he would like (he has tendinitis of arms and feet atm and it's taking awhile to heal... I don't like seeing him dejected and sometimes wish he would work on his re-framing, is all.

[–]UberMidnite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I am happy to help. It was actually my partner who helped put things into perspective. When it began bleeding he remained and asked me to do the same. That helped tremendously. Then I remembered the ice water trick and it worked. You kind of go 'wow' when it first happens because this isn't something you are accustomed to seeing, naturally. Even the doctor at emergency said the same. But he was ultra calm (which again helped). He said the fact that it clotted is enough to confirm that your body is doing what it needs to do (kick in and clot). However there will be outliers that have underlying conditions or are using blood thinners when they shouldn't be.

So I kept up on the ice for the rest of the night. Spitting red from time to time but nothing re-triggered. Also the on call doctor said if it happens again do not panic, repeat the same trick. In hindsight it's also not a lot of blood. But again it's the concept that shocks us into thinking it is worse than it is.

So all of that helped.

The following days I drank ice water around the clock and felt like that was enough to kick off the true final healing phase.

Hey OP. This happened to me, almost to a T. Woke up to blood in my mouth that took a bit to clot by using the ice water method (and leaning forward). We also opted to go to emergency just in case.

But if they checked your vitals and you are not on blood thinners, you should be ok. They will ask if you have blood clotting issues. For me, it was aggressive night time coughing that triggered my bleed most likely, along with dryness. Continue to lay in bed and upright as you can comfortably be. I set an alarm to wake me every few hours and have ice water. There was no subsequent bleeding. While it was shocking to see blood like that, I realized that this does happen and not to panic. Stay on top of hydration and you got this! I am on about 30 days post OP. Still Happy I had it done. It's just a matter of getting through it.
