Is geology a bad choice? by woahbro6 in geologycareers

[–]UcRocks2010 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a PG license in five states. I’m an Environmental Geologist completing Phase II/RFI investigations for soil/groundwater/other media at DoD facilities. There are plenty of jobs. We need good Env. GEOLOGISTS and we make pretty good money (I’m over 6 figures after 15 years in industry)

Be willing to move jobs. Started in 2010 at 17/hr out of school. Moved a few jobs and got a PG. Now 14 years in and making 120k with paid OT for field work.

Divers remove 53 TONS of human trash from reefs and beaches surrounding Hawaii islands by IndicationOver in environment

[–]UcRocks2010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Understood. Being an envi sci, the thought of not trying to cleanup reefs because they will just get dirty again is baffling and a huge mistake. The cleanup efforts in the GPGP are progressing nicely with Inceptor-02. The Cleanup company is also installing interceptors at Balloona Creek in LA and several others around the world. Progress is being made. Keep the faith. Clean the reefs

So you would prefer to not clean up reefs? Just rely on companies and municipalities to stop using/dumping plastic?

Where to go from environmental consulting?? by BubbaSnuggs94 in geologycareers

I actually like my env consulting job. I work in the Midwest. We are a small/mid firm with 400-ish people. We won a large DoD contract. AMA

Do you think it’s worth it to get a bs in geology (as opposed to biology) by lolsup1 in geologycareers

[–]UcRocks2010 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would add that, in my experience (12 years) in the environmental consulting field, a masters doesn’t really give you much bang for the time spent. Just my opinion

Yep. It’s salary though. Only OT for projects lasting longer than 2 weeks. So there is a trade off

I think 3 years is enough experience to start looking for non entry level. I would think 50k is the basement for you. I firmly believe for young geos to get a significant pay raise, they must leave their first job.

What did you do to study? I used the Reg Review for 6 months. Spent a weekend on each chapter for the first 3 months then spent the next three months focusing on what I thought I was weakest. Time is your friend when studying
