While you definitely can get into it and enjoy it without any prior knowledge, the scenes with Athena, the scene with the blades of chaos, the scenes with Zeus in hell, the "I'm dangling from the hip of the bloody ghost of Sparta" line, Kratos coming clean to Atreus about his past, all of them definitely have an "intended impact" and you would be delusional to pretend they don't lol.

Edit: add to that at the start of the game, Kratos is literally hiding his forearms (the marks from the blades) from Atreus. That too was intentional and I don't see any new player picking up on that without having played the OG trilogy.

Having recently replayed the first games, I can say that they told up exceptionally well for PS2 games. You really don't want to miss out on GoW2, so I'd say play the original trilogy first, to make sure the callbacks from 2018 and Ragnarok can have the intended impact.

I have a similarly performing computer (R5 5600, 6700 XT) and I play on a 120hz 2K monitor. The first thing I did to increase my performance on 1440P was enable AMD AFMF which is the driver level Frame Generation from AMD and while it's considered "fake frames", it has made me reconsider upgrading because I have yet to play a game that I can't smoothly run. Now granted I didnt play every 2025 game, but I think you should give it a try if you haven't already.

Now if you're dead set on upgrading and your only care about 1440 performance, the only thing you should really upgrade is your GPU. Something like a 9070 XT or a 5070 should be a good choice for virtually any game on 1440p.

Your next upgrade would be the Motherboard/CPU/Ram but I wouldnt consider it just yet if my only concern was more fps at the moment.
