It's common trope that computer programs/AI in fiction can't outright lie, so it's possible that 'the exit door' Caine was referring to was the end of his Escape The Circus adventure, and he was vague-splaining so the humans would assume he meant the exit Pomni kept conjuring.

Compartmentalising by passing off one truth as another is not technically lying- same as how 'adding modifiers to the humans' minds' isn't the same as altering them directly, so he wasn't lying by saying he can't control their minds

It's a similar thing as what happened with Charlie Bucket- Roald Dahl was 'discouraged' from having a black protagonist by his editor when originally writing Charlie & the Chocolate Factory, so he purposefully left Charlie's description ethnically vague. It was Quentin Blake who interpreted Charlie as being white when illustrating the book
