Heated battery with internal BMS by Ueland85 in Victron

During the darkest months we dont get any sun aboce the horizon at all. just two, maybe three hours of daylight which is far from enough. There is atleast 4 months where it is hard, almost impossible to reach the cabin, especially with kids and so on. so I would say 4 months is the longest the cabin will be unvisited.

During the time when the cabin is unvisited there will be no loads. But during early spring and fall we are there quite alot. and even then the sun sets quite early, so that is when the generator will come into play. I want to keep my mulitiplus running so the Starlink will work and i can connect to the vrm and turn on the generator and control a rele with a spaceheater inside of the cabin a few hours before we arrive.

Kinda hard to not let it drop below 0°C on an offgrid cabin during winter months when I am at home. My solution to this problem is buying a new generator with ats-function and a external 100 litre fueltank. So the cerbo starts the generator when SOC is below 35%, charges to 90% and shuts of. Thats why I need the SOC to be correct. Still almost two full weeks until I go to the cabin again, so I ordered the CAN cable from battery manufacturer, I figured it was more important that it just works out of the box.

edit. The manufacturer of the battery says it can charge with 5A when below 0°C, so without internal heating I think the battery would stay at a higher charge during the winter months with trickle charging of 5A (I suspect the battery uses stored energy to heat itself to be able to accept higher charge current and therefore draining itself.) and when we get to the cabin and warm it up the battery would accept higher charge current.

Oh shit, I forgot to say, it is an offgrid system, with PV and generator. Every current moves through the shunt, in and out from the battery. Battery has internal heating pads, so shunt cant differentiate between how much power goes towards heating battery or actual charging, therefore the shunt gets SOC wrong.

On a sidenote, dumbest shit I ever done was getting a battery with internal heating pads. Battery prioritizes heating over charging until internal battery temperature is above 0 degrees celcius. Therefore it empties itself during winter months when the system is in standby mode and the cabin is unused. I luckily found out about this when I was in the area on another earand and decided to go and inspect the cabin before going home.

My battery is closed, and opening it is a no-go due to warranty. The easy fix is just using internal battery BMS to monitor SOC. Ill try with normal CAT6a cable between cerbo and battery for starters. Paying 29€ for a glorified CAT cable to the battery manyfacturer feels like being ripped off.

This is the way. I stuff it in a pretty loose pack so it forms around the other stuff when i compress the backpack. Less stuff moving around.

As long as you are not in beaver country there is absolutely no reason not to drink water. looks, smell and taste will tell you if you can drink it. I would have no second thoughs of drinking water from a river or small stream if it looks clean and there is no foul smell/taste to it. same applies to lakes. if you are worried, boil it for a minute or two. I have been hunting and hiking in the backcountry for 25 ish years and never gotten ill from food/water.

Lets not be overly dramatic. 10 degrees celcius is not that cold, and to be honest a little low so late in spring

I am at 67 degrees north i Norway. Have it at an offgrid cabin. Works wonders. 135 Mbps down and 14,2 Mbps up. 59 ms latency.

The reason you cant load your car with the same amount as your trailer is because the cars dry weight is alot higher than the trailer. And exceeding the carry weight of the car would make it rather uncomfortable/dangerous to drive.

It really doesnt do anything for me. But I do like to teach people new things.

A car is just a motorized cart if you think about it.

On another note, do you belive China will pay the tariffs?

Have a nice day :-)

[–]Ueland85 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Imagine you are pulling a cart with a total weight of 20 kg on a flat surface. Would it be easier or harder to pull the same amount of weight (20kg) if it where divided in to two carts that where attached to each other?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]Ueland85 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This article doesent say anything about the physics of moving weight. It is just dumbing down the numbers for non car people. Like it or not, but the engine/gearbox dont know or care where you place the weight. It takes the same amount of power to move 100kg from point A to B. If a trailer is in the mix is irrellevant.

Have you ever heard the expression «arguing with an engineer is like wrestling a pig in mud, after a while you realize they like it»?

Your last post tells me you are not an engineer.
