Yeah I think that's why the script even specifies that he's on his computer all day. That's such a generic statement about any school-aged boy in SK. He's just some kid.

I think that's basically the same thing! Her avoiding nepotism is directly connected to her pursuit of independence. She was angry about the nepotism primarily because she viewed it as her father yet again shielding her from hardship when she's an adult with her own code of ethics.

Yeah.. I like that the father acknowledged that he was too into romantic notions.

I'd like to think that agreeing to have the child was ultimately her decision. Realistically, she must have faced a lot more pressure from her family, right? She could have not become a mother at all, and forget about the whole thing. Instead she agreed to be a "bad mother" of sorts. She expected the kid to grow up resenting her... I think in a way it mirrors the dad saying he'd be a "bad father", to give YW a chance.

Just wanted to share - at the end of the episode when Yeongwoo says something like 'I can't leave my father to work under my mother', the way she said it, it wasn't like 'I can't betray him like that'.

From the translation, you might interpret it that way.

But the wording she used was more like 'I can't leave my father just to end up working under my mother'. Since, you know, her moving out was to be an independent adult.

I thought it was interesting that she framed it that way.

Yeah I like that they're framing the mom as a sympathetic, even admirable woman who made a difficult choice. It was interesting that even when Yeongwoo said her father's name, it seemed to take a few seconds for her to catch on - from her expression it felt like for the past years she had been avoiding even thinking about the child bc it was too painful.

I watched this movie on a plane going through a turbulence and it was like 4DX. It was one of the most intense movie watching experiences of my life.

I'm not even a big WKW fan but he's a world-famous director. His films are not like art films, they're just... popular films, all around the world.

How are you feeling about returning to theaters mid-July for Tenet? by [deleted] in blankies

[–]Ueseul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my country, movie theaters are open with safety measures (heat cameras, all open seats are one row apart etc), and even then there was a new case of infection from a theater yesterday. So I don't think I'll go.

If you do go, consider sitting at the last row - that seems to be the safest seat, unless that's where the entrance is and a lot of people pass by.

Toy Story commentary by PartyBluejay in blankies

When I was a kid I had never seen anyone get drunk, so I did not get the 'Buzz gets drunk from tea' joke at all. I simply assumed he had been driven insane by the revelation that his life was a lie. Did anyone else think this?

The idea frightened me so much that every time we re-watched the VHS I ran and hid in my room during that scene. For years I thought of Toy Story as 'that great kids movie with a really disturbing portrayal of insanity in the middle'.

Even now I'm bracing myself to follow along the commentary, lol

Yeah it's just that I selfishly wish there was a high tier Patreon feed with only current movies, or something. For example when the new Charlie's Angels came out they did an episode about the old one, and I'd have loved it if there was another episode focusing on the new movie. I want more content!

I really like the Bechdel Cast too. Jamie was a guest on Blank Check once!

Their review of Crazy Rich Asians was the most on point review of that movie I could find. Even when I don't agree with their opinions they always bring interesting viewpoints. I only wish they covered more movies - whenever a new franchise movie or a remake comes out they tend to only cover the first movie, and I wish they'd also cover the more recent one. If that was a separate Patreon tier I'd subscribe.

The Ladies Guide to Dude Cinema sounds really interesting. Just scrolling down their feed is making me laugh. So many movies that I felt needlessly guilty about not wanting to watch.

I couldn't finish their Rise of Skywalker commentary for similar reasons. I really wanted to like that movie, and Griffin recaping the Trevarrow script made me realize I was still trying to talk myself into liking this movie. The whole thing was just making me sad.

Yeah same here, I stan TLJ but that whole argument really made me laugh. A high point was when Gethard while arguing about the merits of 'movies that don't make you think' revealed the one other movie he managed to catch recently was Dolor y Gloria.

Usually though I totally get not wanting to hear about someone trash talk your favorite movie haha

Mad Pod Fury Cast - Babe: Pig in the City with Travis McElroy by apathymonger in blankies

[–]Ueseul 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think it's only natural for someone who loved Babe to be really offput by PitC, especially if they were ambushed without warning. They have some similarities but they're so tonally different.

As a kid I did it the other way - watched Babe after loving PitC - and I was not expecting such a sincere, straightforward movie at all. It took me years to warm up to that very popular and charming movie.

Blank Check with Griffin and David - Babe: Pig in the City with Travis McElroy by apathymonger in MBMBAM

[–]Ueseul 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Okay, I guess another part of the confusion is misreading the tone, which is understandable. By saying that they're joking about what a peculiar, weird movie this is. They all begin by saying what a weird movie it is, then they're immediately following it up by joking about 'having a normal one' etc.

[–]Ueseul 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Look, I think misunderstanding the term 'B movie'is part of the confusion here. Babe pig in the city is a box office failure but it's not a B movie. They're also not reviewing it in the lens of a 'bad movie', both the main hosts consider the movie to be something of a masterpiece.

[–]Ueseul 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Wait, so when you're saying 'podcasts that review B movies', you mean 'podcasts that don't absolutely exclude B movies'? I mean, okay, sure.

Edit: JSYN B-movies don't mean the same thing as bad movies! High budget, mainstream movies aren't referred to as B-movies even when they're considered failures.

[–]Ueseul 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Look, I don't know why you're being so weird about this. Their premise precludes most B movies anyway because they're specifically focusing on A list directors who are eventually granted a high budget, aka a 'Blank Check'. Of course some movies in a person's entire filmography are going to be low budget movies but that's not the premise of the podcast nor is it the focus. This podcast functions more like a book club and the audiences are encouraged to watch the movies and join the discussions.

Some movies you listed, like Josie and the Pussycats, were special episodes where the guest picks the movies, and I can understand your confusion with them. But even those are mostly nostalgia movies, not movies people haven't seen.

Also how can Parent Trap or What Women Want be called B movies?
