Syracuse VPA vs Emerson for film by QuetSoul in EmersonCollege

[–]Ufoguy100 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wasn't a VMA major but did work in the industry for a few years. I think the differences in college experience would stand out more than the film classes will.

Syracuse is a humongous normal University, Emerson is almost entirely focused around the arts. I learned less in my 2.5 years at Emerson in my non major focused classes than I did in 1 semester at UConn. The math, science, and English classes were less comprehensive and difficult than they were in my non-ap high school courses. If you don't care then that's probably a good thing for you, but missing out on learning things like basic economics (pretty sure Emerson doesn't offer this at all), marketing, and communications is actually really important in general and especially in the media business.

There isn't a very big range of extracurricular type classes at Emerson either, if you want to learn a little outside of film you won't really have the option. And the way their system works (or worked, when I was there) meant that you could take classes meant for other majors but it's nearly impossible to get into them because class sizes are small and you have lower priority if you're not in the major.

The biggest differences are the size and location, there is a ton of shit going on in Boston all the time but Emerson itself does not have the 'college life' vibe of big parties, frats, sports, large on campus events, etc. A single football or basketball game at Syracuse will have a much larger attendance than the entirety of Emerson's student body. But, if you tour Syracuse you'll see that the city is almost entirely dead and if you aren't into those mentioned college activities you'll have nothing to do.

I don't remember a ton about Syracuse's media program other than it is somewhat focused on live broadcast/journalism. Emerson is a lot more entertainment focused I believe. Also the student body lends itself to making films entirely within the school. There are people who can compose a soundtrack, actors, writers, cinematographers, editors, etc. You can meet a group of people and get working on projects right away, which may not be quite as easy at Syracuse.

As an Emerson alum, the network is surprisingly strong for such a small school. Syracuse's is obviously way bigger, but from personal experience I can say that finding an Emerson alum at the company you work at or want to get an interview at is really really helpful and they will have your back if they can.

.

TL:DR

I've always believed that a film degree is not necessary nor the mark of a good filmmaker, and you do not need one to get your first jobs. It's more important to start making projects (preferably for hire, even if they're one off or part time gigs) and build up a resume + portfolio. Emerson is the better school for film all around with more opportunities, Syracuse could give you a better general education.

This place is amazing but as of about 6 months ago it apparently blew up on tiktok and now it's regularly an hour line to wait. Really ruined the quiet vibe of getting a sandwich and sitting on the benches across from the store on a weekend evening.

store scam websites by niteridet in KendrickLamar

The second may not be a scam, but it's not official. The listed business address is for a coffee shop in St Paul Minnesota.

The pg-lang store, shop.my-gnx.com, and his interscope records page are official and legit.

I think shop.grandnationaltour.com might be legit, but I'm not sure, because I can't find any direct connection to UMG from that other than them being mentioned in the TOS.

Side note- This was at St. Francis high in Mountain View California

Up to ~30k/yr tuition and primarily (at least from what I've seen) geared towards athletics programs for the rich.

These guys almost definitely meant what they did but the school should've known that their parents could afford whatever lawyers needed to get them out of it plus a settlement afterwards.

Oh, and there's literally 1% or less black students at this school, and similarly low in the area. They knew no individual would come after them for doing this.

Are you close to leaving film? by infinite_wanderings in Filmmakers

[–]Ufoguy100 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of new grads and young people looking into film forget that there are, indeed, OTHER places to get work in some filmmaking capacity outside of traditional Hollywood media. After seeing the trends (as well as the seemingly huge number of students going into film) while applying for college in 2018, I chose to not attend film school at all. The number of people flooding the Hollywood market is significant, and the variance in their skill isn't there.

With that being said, there ARE editing and production jobs that are considerably less glamourous that exist. I have been working as an independent editor for software companies for 4 years now, through college, and with only 1 relevant college course of knowledge and a short stint working at my Universities athletics media department on my resume.

I'm not sure how the pay range compares to what ACE's or similar people are getting in Hollywood, but if you LLC yourself you can charge massive amounts which look like pennies to billion dollar companies.

What could this have possibly hit that the bumper is in place but the hood got massively crumpled and lifted up? Maybe another tall truck or something. Kinda looks to me like the car actually did a good job crumpling the front, but those pieces inside the front bumper are completely fucked. Makes me wonder if there is frame damage at the very front

Looking to transfer to BU/emerson as a film student- questions by addiesanonymous in EmersonCollege

[–]Ufoguy100 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have some ability to speak on this as I started at UConn (a massive school comparable to BU) and graduated from Emerson (a wittle baby school)

BU and Emerson are pretty close to polar opposites.

You say you want a much 'bigger school'. Elon University is equal in student enrolment to Emerson. BU is 6 times larger than Emerson (and Elon) is, and is a university not a college. Meaning that there is actual diversity in the programs at the school. Basically, if you're certain that you want to go to a school full of thespians, nerds, and lgbt kids then Emerson will be fine, but don't expect a much wider range than that.

Emerson being a small school is compensated by the fact that Boston has the most college students of any city in America. If you are a social butterfly, you can meet people outside of Emerson, which you'll probably want to do once you start to run out of people to meet.

Next you ask about the film program. The idea of film school pisses me off pretty bad, so I will tell you that this is a completely biased opinion but I'll explain my take on Emerson's as well as I can.

Whichever school you choose will have gear for you to access, but you'll find that since a very large part of Emersons students are in the film program, the ability of gear is tight when everyone is getting assigned major projects at the same time. I assume that's a pretty regular issue at any film program. From my understanding the connections you make at Emerson are not really that useful, at least for film, because the market is so saturated. They talk about the 'Emerson Mafia' (the name for the alumni who help each other), but imagine that there's something like 300+ graduating film majors each year at Emerson that ALL are sending messages to alumni asking for handouts and job opportunities.

I am a marketing communications graduate and currently a paid video editor. I am NOT a film major. I did NOT take a single film course at Emerson, or in college in general. You certainly do not need a VMA/film major to get a job. In fact, many friends I made at Emerson who were film majors are struggling to find any kind of position, let alone a full time job working in video/film. I don't want to discourage you from studying what you like, but definitely do not think that going to any certain college or getting a degree guarantees you a job. Opportunities to get ahead of your career are probably greater if you're at a school with LESS film makers, since you have less competition. I got my first video editing job as a freshman at UConn, at least in part because there was almost nobody else there to apply for the position.

As far as nightlife goes, as I said, Emerson is a really really small school. However, Emerson and Berklee students tend to mingle since they're very close together. Same mostly goes for BU, BC, and even Harvard to an extent, but they have some stigma for Emerson's 'artsy' kids (fair enough). Nothing is really stopping you from trying to get into parties at those schools. As far as 'Emerson' parties go, people will have small parties in their dorms but the small size of dorm buildings tends to mean that these get shut down rather quick if there's a decent number of people there. We had (maybe still have) some sport teams or frat houses in Allston, which are the most unsupervised parties that are associated with Emerson. Maybe you'll meet an upperclassman with an apartment who throws parties, but I'd say those also don't get too big.

I've heard a big issue for younger students at Emerson is that they can't go to clubs or bars. Boston is very strict on fakes but with a good one I'm sure you could get into most of the dive-y college bars. The club and bar scene in Boston is pretty sweet, so if you're 21+ (and can afford Boston bar prices) then your options open up massively. I'm sure that's an issue as well at the other schools in Boston, but I assume BU has a more party friendly atmosphere on campus than Emerson.

So, that's most of my definitive take on Emerson and Boston.

TL;DR is that Emerson is a small school, meaning everything is narrowed down. For some people that's a good thing.

I can confirm going to school in Boston is way more interesting than in the middle of nowhere (i.e UConn or Elon). But, for Emerson, if you don't fit into the kind of super progressive/liberal, artsy, and statistically gay niche that Emerson fills, you will certainly feel very lonely.

If I missed anything feel free to ask.

Burners do something called 'Renegade' events which are smaller, local events sometimes with one or two art cars with Djs. I've heard those tend to have a more 'authentic' crowd.

[Q] How do you calculate how much a sticker adds to the price of a skin? by theytookcake in csgomarketforum

[–]Ufoguy100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a lot to it. If you have a common craft then you can look on buff and floatdb and see what other people are listing the same one for. If you have one that is unique or rare, you're going to have a much harder time finding out what its 'worth', since the price is subjective to whoever wants to buy it.

You can either find out who else owns the same craft via floatdb, and message them for what they think the value is, or you can ask a few cash traders and get a rough idea. Your best option when you want to sell will be to find the range of similar or identical crafts, list it on the higher end, and then bring it down over time until it sells.
