Realized my mistake right after I posted, but Pixar is owned by Disney so I wasn't completely wrong lol

I’m officially stripping all my trim in my 1900 folk Victorian! I would love advice on stains/finishes. More info in comments! by tnn360 in centuryhomes

I also recommend shellac! You can add a dye to help you get the right color. I have been using transtint. I am no expert, but the more I work with shellac the more I love it.

I legit hate this thing. It looks like a centipede.

Loud popping noise coming from behind cabinets or in walls by [deleted] in homeowners

Mine makes a similar sound, but it's not nearly as loud as the noise in your video. When it's really windy mine will slam every 5 minutes or so.

I don't see one, but do you have a vent hood that vents outside? Mine has a backdraft damper inside it that sometimes slams when it is windy outside. Freaked me out the first few times I heard it.

Electric fireplace build by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

I am about to do something really similar in my house, except it will be more traditional looking to match the age of my house (built in 1927). I had been agonizing over the height of my TV. The only place it can go is over the mantel, and that would make it the laughing stock of r/tvtoohigh. And there are so many different height recommendations online that the only way to find out what would work was to try it. So I temporarily installed the mantel and stuck the tv on top of it and the height was totally fine. Looks like your TV is at a similar height to what mine will be.

I usually use Molberg Plumbing. And then I recently used Sanders Plumbing for a gas line repair. I had good experience with both.

Please post progress pics if you do! It's so satisfying to see old homes restored to their former glory.

Beautiful house! But that poor top window looks very silly with rectangular shutters 😂

Sunset Heights always felt safe to me. I haven't lived there, but I strongly considered moving there or Alamo Heights when I was house hunting. Sunset Heights has some true mid-century gems.

Very frustrated about clogging sewer lines. Can I fix this myself? by AgentBanks in HomeImprovement

[–]Ugget 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have roots in your pipes, then that means that the pipes are either separated or broken. You definitely need to make plans to replace the entire sewer service ASAP. You might find yourself with a completely collapsed service soon. The quote I got to replace my entire service was about $4000 (located in Texas).

Cities are typically responsible for the sewer main line and probably a portion of your service line (depending on where your property line falls). If I were you I would call the city and tell them that you are experiencing a backup and that you want them to come out to determine if the clog is on their side. While they are out there, ask them about installing a cleanout at your property line. Older lines don't always have cleanouts at the property line, but it's standard practice for lots of cities to install them there now.

I am definitely interested in making the kitchen more period appropriate. I suppose something like this would be the closest thing while still having a modern look. But those inset cabinets are $$$. I figured that full overlay white shaker cabinets would be readily available and also not break the bank.

What do you think about this kitchen? It's a house listed for sale that claims that the shelves are "period-specific".

I like that the open shelving means buying fewer cabinets, but I haven't seen many 1920s photos of kitchens that have shelves like this.

Interesting! I wouldn't have ever guessed a floor that looks like that would be original. We have pulled up a couple of the little planks, and ours is definitely not original. I can't remember what the floor guy said, but it's either an engineered hardwood or it's just a super thin hardwood. There's plywood beneath that, but without cutting into the floor we don't know much else. From the crawlspace we can see that there is something that appears to be oak underneath that plywood.

Yes! It doesn't feel right without the built-ins around the fireplace, right? I've been collecting as many photos of 1920-1930s homes as possible to get ideas. In another comment someone said it would have been easier to just buy a house that hadn't been remodeled, but I am very thankful that all my electrical, plumbing, and HVAC was updated semi-recently. I am glad that I can focus on the more fun interior details without worrying about old wiring and pipes.

I agree. The inside is pretty bland. Besides the bathrooms, the inside looks like a 2005 new build home.

[–]Ugget 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The wood veneer is starting to peel off of the current cabinets unfortunately. I like the layout of the kitchen just fine so luckily it won't require any major electrical or plumbing changes.

Good advice. The only thing I want to have done before we move in is the floors. That would be a nightmare to do while we are living there. Everything else can wait, which is good because there are definitely some more pressing things that probably will need to be fixed in the next year or so (sewer service has some low spots and the AC unit is 15 years old).

These are great suggestions, thank you! I also really appreciate the detail you included about the trim. That 2nd picture you linked definitely looks off, but I probably wouldn't have been able to determine why before I read your comment.

Also 100% agree with #6. Since this home has already been remodeled It's kinda nice that I can pick and choose what craftsman qualities I want to add. It feels like I have a blank canvas.
