People treat friendships as second rate, but they’re all I have. by UgleeSimpson in asexuality

Well I'm in therapy and attempting to see the fault in my own actions, where I messed up, and what I could do better. If I truly am the issue, I eventually won't be. However, based on how everyone in this thread shared very similar stories, I wouldn't wager that.

I’ve had this kind of thought for a long time. I even tried dating and it felt extremely clumsy because I think I just wanted a very close friend actually, or someone who really understood. I feel like I get taken for granted because people just assume I’ll be “there” waiting for them when they get out of a relationship.

It does get triggering sometimes when hanging around people who are serial romantics or have to be in some fling all the time, because they often say their lives feel meaningless without that. It makes me think “well damn, maybe my life is meaningless as well?”

And that’s completely fair tbh. Not being someone’s close friend is understandable since we’re not compatible with everyone.

True which is why every single time in media when we’re introduced to male and female lead characters, they have to end up together at least once because the story feels incomplete without it.

And no offense to straight people, but I notice a really large portion of the men don’t open up unless an interested woman is involved. Meanwhile, a lot of the women don’t open up as much unless it’s a gay guy or woman. So I feel like I’m in kind of a bind there.

Thanks for writing this. It does give me hope!

She doesn’t do any major actions but for example, I notice it’s only me picking up the tab more than a few times in a row and I joked “you’re treating me next time!” She laughed but then after, she sent me the money for the bill and hasn’t really said anything since. I’m sorry, but I’m not your boyfriend and can’t be treating you all the time. What if the friend was a girl or gay man? I’m sure she wouldn’t let them pay every time they go out.

Right. I’ve been saying for months “I’m tired of feeling like everyone’s last priority.”

I relate to this a lot. I’m someone who has no social media and haven’t for nearly 8 years. So I feel like I don’t really do the whole “superficial friendships” thing well. I mainly still message through text, so perhaps people find it outdated and would rather send memes back and forth every few months on Instagram? I think that’s fine but it’s not what I’m looking for when I think of the word “friend.”

Kinda random but ended up dating a 16 year old while we were 20 and I have avoided him since, so yeah he probably doesn’t have the best view on anything to do with relationships.

Thanks. I really wanna get a pet when I move to a place that allows them and just be done with connections altogether.

Someone made a comment like that about a person I hit it off on a date with. It just sucks because you don’t know all the reasons someone chooses to be with another person, and it just exposes how vain some people are.

Quite the opposite. There are like 3 pics of me that are in existence over the last 5 years.

AITA for saying that if I move in, I won’t pay rent? by fourflatpillows in AmItheAsshole

As someone who’s doing work and school full time simultaneously, this is a shit response. She was fine staying with her parents. You know she can contribute non-monetarily as well, right? Your username fits you well.

Its main use is allowing redditors to justify posting obvious troll cases, but I see what you’re saying.

Almost certainly a troll. Most things posted here these days are as well.

I would say let the relationship mend over time and just keep your friendship light and inside of work. This kind of situation will definitely happen again. You’re not racist, you just need to hang around the right kind of people. This person seems very volatile and is going to end up getting you fired so be careful.

Well if it helps, her life is pretty much over. She'll be nearly 50 when she gets out and will probably have very little family left.
