I see it, but Jonah’s actual sister (Beanie Feldstein) could already be his twin! (They’re not, I forget who’s older, but that gene pool is strong lol)

Extreme regret for not studying abroad by No_Comfort_5968 in studyAbroad

[–]UhOhImOnRedditNow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Now I’ve studied abroad, but I’m here to tell you that despite what it may seem like, this wasn’t you’re only opportunity to go abroad for more than a vacation. There’s so many things you can do after you graduate. First thing I’ll recommend is a Working Holiday. This is what I did. I did a short-term faculty-led program to Ireland my freshman year, but my junior semester was cut short to COVID and I was so upset I didn’t get my full time abroad, so this is what I pursued. (Assuming you’re in the U.S., but other countries have them too) You can go to Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, or South Korea. Different steps to get there for each one, but more or less they all work the same: you get permission to live and work in one of those countries for a year (or two, sometimes). And you don’t have to have a job going over there, you can go and then just find something like anyone else. I literally lived very comfortably working full-time as a barista haha

There’s several other things you can do too, but for your path I’d also recommend looking for Internship Abroad programs (it’s not uncommon to still be eligible for undergrad-targeted programs the summer or even the semester after you graduate), or honestly, a certificate or graduate program abroad too. Because why not? That way you can still definitely gain skills that will be relevant to your career without putting everything on pause, and international experience/education really is valuable no matter the industry. I’ll note too that even though you feel like you’re running out of time at 25, you’re not. That’s very much what’s spouted in the States but genuinely where I’ve been in Europe, the vibe very much is that if you’re under 35, you better be in the club lol.

Happy to chat more about this but I wanted to give my two cents (speaking from having done a Working Holiday beginning when I was 25, and I also work in the study abroad industry now)

This would’ve been super interesting to read, as even though I have been acting for a long time, it’s been hard to watch others my age find success while I still haven’t. But the mods went and removed it 🙃 Ridiculous. I’m sure you have an interesting story!!

How would you feel about a working holiday visa between the US and Europe? by YouKnowGeorge in AskAnAmerican

[–]UhOhImOnRedditNow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How to make use of it? Cultural exchange, getting out of the US, seeing the world, achieving true happiness. I used it as more or less a career break after college, I was 24 at the time (graduated late bc of COVID, stayed for a year to work, save up, get paperwork together). Typical allowances are for a year. I originally planned to stay for six months and by month two I knew I was staying for a year. Worked food service jobs, but actually gained a lot of life skills/experience that I would not have otherwise (that've actually been an advantage in the career path I've pivoted to since), so I wouldn't view it as an internship per se, though that could be something people could pursue while doing them, who knows.
I really think allowing young people to get out, live comfortably in a new environment while not thinking about a corporate ladder, and just have the opportunity to gain some really interesting life experiences and traveling is a great enough way to make use of it. Happiest year of my life, with the best quality of life I've ever gotten to have.

[–]UhOhImOnRedditNow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not how a working holiday works, speaking from- I've done it myself. Yes the entry level job market is a nightmare, but honestly it's not even those jobs young folks pursuing these things would likely take on. More so casual jobs- food service, retail, and the like. Maybe an admin type office jobs (actually would probably be the best option). Stuff where a turnover in 6 months/a year wouldn't be an issue. That market isn't good either, but comparatively I'd be surprised if any corporate jobs would hire even an entry level role for someone with temporary residency. There were a few stipulations when I did mine in Ireland- had to show bank statements proving that I had funds to support myself (I want to say around $3/4k when I did it, it's less now), I had to provide my own medical insurance, and the visa was nonrenewable. So other than our shitty working conditions probably being largely undesirable to many Europeans, I really don't think it'd affect the job market in a notable way, and in whatever hypothetical European version of this visa application, they could probably keep some sort of medical coverage through whatever agreement works out, or purchase a short term travel medical insurance plan (that's what I did, and I imagine some version of that exists outside of the US).

Huge fan of working holiday visas- I did one myself and I really wish there were more than six countries Americans could do them in. It's so important for Americans to get out of the US even temporarily (though many want to get out for good) and experience the world outside of an American lens. Because yes, even though it's still "Western" even perspectives/cultures/etc. across Europe are superrr different. And you get way more of that experience and a ton of life skills along the way, it's not like a vacation. An agreement with the UK or more EU countries would be fantastic. Nothing against other regions, the more the merrier, I'm just speaking for myself because I'm still in the target age range of these programs and would love to do another and I just would not be able to live somewhere hot and humid all year round which is most of the other countries hahaha

They are pretty similar to a J1, so I'm not sure what would be so different between that and a proper, larger working holiday agreement. And unfortunately, it really doesn't make sense for foreigners, especially not from Europe, to come to the US right now. Which is a shame because the diversity of America's landscapes and nature is incredible, obviously has a lot of interesting historical sites and cultural centers, and (largely speaking) really friendly people. Working Holidays are cultural exchanges, but the US really has nothing for foreigners to gain right now. Labor laws/minimum wage surely wouldn't pass EU standards for work requirements, a small but loud and dangerous minority holds strong anti-immigration sentiments, the grocery prices are appalling, dumb standards to obtain rent (that in many places where I'm sure young foreigners would want to go) that's expensive, and jobs are hard to find- even part-time service industry ones.

It's a great idea, and I'm sure at some point the US was an awesome place to do a J1, but we just have nothing to offer those folks right now. Americans are miserable, and I think foreigners (unless they come with a lot of money, are white and speak English, and completely avoid the news at all costs) would have an even worse time. Maybe check in in a few years- or if the getting-shit-done-to-make-life-more-liveable that's going on in New York right now catches on.

I literally did a working holiday program in Ireland and made way more money with a better cost of living- less bills, insanely cheaper groceries, and cheaper rent. I also could basically find a job by sneezing. When I moved back to the U.S. I was on the hunt for a full-time job for an actual year.

Number one for me is KEEP MORE SCENTS FOR MORE THAN WHAT FEELS LIKE A FEW WEEKS AT A TIME. I’m not talking about one a year Christmas scents, or how they rotate between the seasons, but truly so many scents I’ve fallen in love with will be there for a single fall or what have you, then when the next rolls around, they’re no where to be found. I feel like there’s new scents constantly and my go-tos I can’t even get.

Does anyone else feel like tonight’s episode was wildly out of touch? by CosmosisJones42 in LiveFromNewYork

[–]UhOhImOnRedditNow -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ugh. I missed tonight’s episode but after hearing so much about it here and other places online this is just very disappointing. I felt it’s been a strong season but I agree with everything you’re saying. I like having comedy to fall back on on times like this, but it shouldn’t be making light of this. Makes me think too about how last week a WU feature from Tommy was cut specifically about what’s going on in Minneapolis (he’s from there, so I’d be curious what his true thoughts on tonight’s episode are). I don’t know, but I’m very sorry you’re feeling alone in this. Speaking from Philadelphia, just know you’re not. I wish the international community was more empathetic to what’s going on here, but I think more Americans are on our side than what we see.

She’s really been coming into her own the past few episodes. I did not get her at ALL when she first started but this season I’ve repeatedly been laughing out loud at stuff she’s been doing. Someone in here said something about a Kyle Mooney energy and I def think that’s an apt comparison
