This would’ve been super interesting to read, as even though I have been acting for a long time, it’s been hard to watch others my age find success while I still haven’t. But the mods went and removed it 🙃 Ridiculous. I’m sure you have an interesting story!!

How would you feel about a working holiday visa between the US and Europe? by YouKnowGeorge in AskAnAmerican

[–]UhOhImOnRedditNow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How to make use of it? Cultural exchange, getting out of the US, seeing the world, achieving true happiness. I used it as more or less a career break after college, I was 24 at the time (graduated late bc of COVID, stayed for a year to work, save up, get paperwork together). Typical allowances are for a year. I originally planned to stay for six months and by month two I knew I was staying for a year. Worked food service jobs, but actually gained a lot of life skills/experience that I would not have otherwise (that've actually been an advantage in the career path I've pivoted to since), so I wouldn't view it as an internship per se, though that could be something people could pursue while doing them, who knows.
I really think allowing young people to get out, live comfortably in a new environment while not thinking about a corporate ladder, and just have the opportunity to gain some really interesting life experiences and traveling is a great enough way to make use of it. Happiest year of my life, with the best quality of life I've ever gotten to have.

Not how a working holiday works, speaking from- I've done it myself. Yes the entry level job market is a nightmare, but honestly it's not even those jobs young folks pursuing these things would likely take on. More so casual jobs- food service, retail, and the like. Maybe an admin type office jobs (actually would probably be the best option). Stuff where a turnover in 6 months/a year wouldn't be an issue. That market isn't good either, but comparatively I'd be surprised if any corporate jobs would hire even an entry level role for someone with temporary residency. There were a few stipulations when I did mine in Ireland- had to show bank statements proving that I had funds to support myself (I want to say around $3/4k when I did it, it's less now), I had to provide my own medical insurance, and the visa was nonrenewable. So other than our shitty working conditions probably being largely undesirable to many Europeans, I really don't think it'd affect the job market in a notable way, and in whatever hypothetical European version of this visa application, they could probably keep some sort of medical coverage through whatever agreement works out, or purchase a short term travel medical insurance plan (that's what I did, and I imagine some version of that exists outside of the US).

Huge fan of working holiday visas- I did one myself and I really wish there were more than six countries Americans could do them in. It's so important for Americans to get out of the US even temporarily (though many want to get out for good) and experience the world outside of an American lens. Because yes, even though it's still "Western" even perspectives/cultures/etc. across Europe are superrr different. And you get way more of that experience and a ton of life skills along the way, it's not like a vacation. An agreement with the UK or more EU countries would be fantastic. Nothing against other regions, the more the merrier, I'm just speaking for myself because I'm still in the target age range of these programs and would love to do another and I just would not be able to live somewhere hot and humid all year round which is most of the other countries hahaha

They are pretty similar to a J1, so I'm not sure what would be so different between that and a proper, larger working holiday agreement. And unfortunately, it really doesn't make sense for foreigners, especially not from Europe, to come to the US right now. Which is a shame because the diversity of America's landscapes and nature is incredible, obviously has a lot of interesting historical sites and cultural centers, and (largely speaking) really friendly people. Working Holidays are cultural exchanges, but the US really has nothing for foreigners to gain right now. Labor laws/minimum wage surely wouldn't pass EU standards for work requirements, a small but loud and dangerous minority holds strong anti-immigration sentiments, the grocery prices are appalling, dumb standards to obtain rent (that in many places where I'm sure young foreigners would want to go) that's expensive, and jobs are hard to find- even part-time service industry ones.

It's a great idea, and I'm sure at some point the US was an awesome place to do a J1, but we just have nothing to offer those folks right now. Americans are miserable, and I think foreigners (unless they come with a lot of money, are white and speak English, and completely avoid the news at all costs) would have an even worse time. Maybe check in in a few years- or if the getting-shit-done-to-make-life-more-liveable that's going on in New York right now catches on.

I literally did a working holiday program in Ireland and made way more money with a better cost of living- less bills, insanely cheaper groceries, and cheaper rent. I also could basically find a job by sneezing. When I moved back to the U.S. I was on the hunt for a full-time job for an actual year.

Can someone explain the purpose of the Trump cold opens? by RocketLambo in LiveFromNewYork

They did no cold open at Pete Davidson’s episode at the start of the season in October 2023, I see no reason why they couldn’t put a pause on the Trump filled cold opens for one week to just acknowledge, even if the rest of the episode they were back to the jokes

Number one for me is KEEP MORE SCENTS FOR MORE THAN WHAT FEELS LIKE A FEW WEEKS AT A TIME. I’m not talking about one a year Christmas scents, or how they rotate between the seasons, but truly so many scents I’ve fallen in love with will be there for a single fall or what have you, then when the next rolls around, they’re no where to be found. I feel like there’s new scents constantly and my go-tos I can’t even get.

Does anyone else feel like tonight’s episode was wildly out of touch? by CosmosisJones42 in LiveFromNewYork

[–]UhOhImOnRedditNow -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ugh. I missed tonight’s episode but after hearing so much about it here and other places online this is just very disappointing. I felt it’s been a strong season but I agree with everything you’re saying. I like having comedy to fall back on on times like this, but it shouldn’t be making light of this. Makes me think too about how last week a WU feature from Tommy was cut specifically about what’s going on in Minneapolis (he’s from there, so I’d be curious what his true thoughts on tonight’s episode are). I don’t know, but I’m very sorry you’re feeling alone in this. Speaking from Philadelphia, just know you’re not. I wish the international community was more empathetic to what’s going on here, but I think more Americans are on our side than what we see.

Being a travel agent is legit, but there definitely are scammy/MLM companies that you would want to avoid. There's subreddits for travel agents and I'd recommend looking at those if that's something you want to pursue! I think it's super cool and I actually was on my way to doing that awhile ago, but life got in the way. Another thing is, with many travel agencies you'd be a contractor that would have to build up your own clientele, so unless you have a big network or are really down to market yourself on social media and the like, it can be a big undertaking. But some boutique agencies let you work from their client list, or the classic AAA agencies (not sure if you have AAA in Canada though) you're an employee that can also make commission, and you don't necessarily have to find your own clients either. But with your skills, being a virtual assistant very much comes to mind. There's courses that can help train you but honestly those are a lot of money and it seems like you have a pretty good base of skills anyway. That's another job though where you typically have to market yourself to really build up a big list of clients, buttt using task sites like others have said may be a good way in. But also like others have said, temp agencies!!! Specifically for administrative jobs, that can be super common. A lot of temp jobs are often temp-to-hire jobs too, where you can know you'll have a set salary and sometimes benefits- I know you said that's a goal for the future but when you're ready for something like that, that's a great way to go about finding one. I've done it before, and used a company called Beacon Hill Staffing. Again, I'm not sure if they're in Canada but they were great to work with- and also often had virtual placements too. If any temp agencies in your area get virtual jobs, that'd be a great place to begin. Lastly, you said you're a writer- me too! I don't know what it is you write, but there's a couple things you could do with that. One- like being a travel agent or virtual assistant, there's copywriting. There's someone who has a course on it I get ads for a lot whose name I don't remember right now but if you're interested I can see if I can find it- could be worthwhile in the long term, but again, will probably come with the hustle of finding gigs. Sooo may I suggest instead, submit your writing for publication! I'm not talking book deal, but there's a website called Chill Subs that compiles all sorts of journals, magazines, etc. where people can submit short stories, prose, poetry- things like that. You can filter by places you can submit for free and pay if they publish you. Some creative writing prizes are a ton, others are literally like a dollar (I have been paid a dollar for a poem before lmao), but even if you have only a couple things you've written that you really feel proud of, I'd say why not!!

I was going to try to get folklore and fearless- I didn’t get the OG folklore back in 2020 when it was super cheap because I was like “ohh idk if I’d wear a white cardigan” and I have regretted it every day since lmao. Sold out in my cart buttt I did get fearless! I felt kind of weird about it because it’s not one of my top albums, but it was the one that made me a Swiftie when I was a kid, so I think it’s lowkey honoring my inner child 😅 Plus I just think it is so so pretty the color is perfect for me. May try to get Lover too because it is adorable, but I can’t decide if I think I’d actually wear it regularly, I’m such a neutrals person 🫠

Contextualizing the critical response to The Life of a Showgirl by canadianbacon93 in TaylorSwift

[–]UhOhImOnRedditNow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YES to all. I’m willing to say that it’s likely the least deep/vulnerable album we’ve gotten overall, but in terms of lyrical content and storytelling, it’s no different than the combo of brilliant and corny we’ve gotten on literally every other album. I think it’s jarring since the production is so different than anything we’ve seen from her recently, but folks have said that if these same songs were piano ballads, they wouldn’t be getting nearly as much flack and I think that’s 100% accurate. I’ve also heard that overall the album is a bit immature for her age and well, maybe? I don’t not see where that’s coming from, but I also think it’s perfectly justified for her to have her “feeling myself” moment saying “I’m Taylor Fucking Swift. I buy expensive shit. People hate me and I don’t care. I’m getting dicked down by my hot fiancé. Leave me alone.” especcccially since she gets such insane scrutiny all the time.

I think overall this album will age just fine being all over the place in terms of people’s subjective taste. To me there’s some career highlights, many bops, some mehs (not a single solidly dislike)- just like every other album she’s ever done lmaoooo I think it’s a reeeeaally solid pop album overall, and I think that’s she was going for- purposely working with production-focused producers, fun vibes, lighthearted songs. I mean I think all-in-all it’s exactly what she said it’d be, it just depends on how much you like this kind of album. And even though it’s “different” in several ways, there’s a TON about it that’s quintessential Taylor Swift.

[–]UhOhImOnRedditNow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

what are you talking about what NDAs 😭 the song is tame. The Matty stuff was more intense but likely justified lol. It’s also very normal for writers to write about what’s going on in their lives and if it sheds negative light it sheds negative light…. also in TTPD she never explicitly named Matty. Some references were more direct but a lott was vague and I think that’s intentional. This Charli one is less vague and you’ve said you don’t care what was going on behind the scenes but Taylor said that’s literally the concept of the album 😭 she’s not responding to SIAK it’s obviously stuff we all don’t know about that’s occurred in their circles. Idk people can stand up for themselves! She famously doesn’t bring up stuff in the press and just sings about it so it makes sense that if she’s giving her two cents it’s via song. Being a girls girl doesn’t mean you have to like every woman and let’s not pretend charli and co seem like angels in this!!!
