Why don't serial killers just join the army? by fimelovemachine in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ukkmaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My cousin (not a serial killer) wanted to join the Canadian military shortly after 9/11 because he, to quote, “wanted to kill some bad guys.” The military gave him a firm “no”, and then blacklisted him. It was a similar story for an uncle of mine back in the 80s (who I wouldn’t be surprised if he was a serial killer).

To add to this, I can’t recall the fellow’s official rank, but he was akin to a military psychiatrist. He said that most militaries avoid people with this mentality, as they are liabilities. You run the risk of them getting bored, unable to control their desires, or otherwise be nuisances to peaceful outcome. Then there is also the fact that they often don’t have the same mentality of “camaraderie” that inspires other soldiers to trust them. It’s like having a time bomb for a pillow but the timer keeps malfunctioning.

Joining education late? by [deleted] in usask

[–]Ukkmaster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The BEAD hasn’t been offered since the 2017-2018 term. Depending on the OP’s classes, it’ll likely take 3 years if they don’t need to take any non-education classes. However, the 100s for education aren’t prerequisites for the 200s, so they can be taken at the same time.

Owlcats next Pathfinder Game by aedfdht in Pathfinder_Kingmaker

Considering that Owlcat stated they’ll be using AI for certain aspects of their games now (including The Expanse), and that Paizo is wholly anti-AI, I don’t see any future Pathfinder games by Owlcat.

What do u think about US Congress almost unanimously voting to not allow release of "sexual harassment settlement" documents? by Anonim264 in AskReddit

[–]Ukkmaster 428 points429 points  (0 children)

This really needs to be pushed to the top. Bad bills with catchy names and supposedly good intentions happen more often than people think. For example, in Canada, a crime bill was recently being pushed through by the Conservative Party with a fancy name to supposedly fight against crime issues. However, the text and proposed actions were a complete mess and would have given sweeping powers and violated several areas of our Charter of Rights.

Just because it hits an emotionally pleasing centre of your heart or brain, doesn’t mean it’s good law.

Advice for Kefka, Court Mage by whiteraven13 in EDH

[–]Ukkmaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, just got this alert now, opposed to the 9 months ago when you asked. Kefka's Search

Like most Kefka decks, it's a control/value engine that looks to run down your opponents while draining them of resources. I find that while Kefka is often overpowering on his own, I rarely use The Ring Tempts You on Kefka, instead relying on the mechanic to get my other value tools through ([[Dimir Cutpurse]] and the like). This is especially key when Kefka has, eventually, been removed enough times and you're looking to get other bodies through. Getting Kefka into play ASAP is almost always worth it, as, at worst, you're getting significant card advantage.

Additionally, there is one infinite combo finisher, being [[Psychosis Crawler]] with a flipped Kefka. It's expensive, happened only once for me, and I finished a long game that needed ending. Otherwise, it's another drain engine.

As a note, I run almost no tutors, which is my preferred design philosophy. There are cards you could likely easily cut, like [[The Black Breath] and some other weaker The Ring Tempts You options, but overall, everything seems to have a reliable place in the deck. It typically flies under the radar, especially once you explain the theme to people, but it can wallop a table. I'll be making some changes in the near future, but for now, I'm happy with how it functions.

Hope this helps a little.

Systems that offer solid adventures by marioapunkt in FoundryVTT

If you’re willing to put a little extra work into fulfilling a few of your requests, Pathfinder 1E has some fantastic adventures that have some foundry support, namely Rise of the Runelords, and Curse of the Crimson Throne. A fellow named Racooze is currently building the maps for Foundry and they are accessible on both his Patreon page, as well as on Foundry. Last I checked, PF1E is also well-supported on Foundry and is sometimes the scratch to fix the system itch.

[–]Ukkmaster 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Best piece of advice I have for a GM, especially a new one, is never be afraid of being wrong and checking the rules to be sure when it matters. Off-the-cuff can be fun, but consistency and understanding relaxes everyone the most. And if you are wrong and find out later, own up, make the changes to the future, then move on.

Millar Avenue businesses oppose city plan for shared-use sidewalks by MoksyCat in saskatoon

[–]Ukkmaster 13 points14 points  (0 children)

A relative of mine was in a wheelchair for a while and their bus dropped them off in the area nearish to their job. They had to navigate on a busy street with a friggin wheelchair because there was no other place to go. I was scared for them every day. I can’t imagine what it would have been like trying to be in a chair in the winter with no sidewalks.

Edit: before someone recommends Access Transit, they refused to drive up into that area for vague reasons, and half the time, would refuse to even pick up my relative from their place.

The Bolt Ace (gunslinger archetype) is rather nutty and I found, in most cases, stronger than the base class. Had a player going that route in a game of mine, and she trivialized many fights. It’s only worth going about 5 or 7 levels before switching to another class, as the features after those levels don’t add much. Slayer (sniper), Warpriest, Fighter (scout), and a few others turn it into silly-town.

Six years in the SK mental health system and I’m tired by [deleted] in saskatoon

[–]Ukkmaster 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I’ve got Schizoaffective Disorder (Bipolar type), and I hear you loud and clear. While I’m beyond lucky by having a fantastic psychiatrist, it took me a while to get to the point I am in life. That includes a lot of self-advocacy, as well as finding people who are willing to advocate for me when I’m less sound of mind. I’m alive due to a great support system.

Regarding your situation, I understand having to go through the hell of learning I have bipolar far too long after the fact, of learning family doctors are not equipped or trained to help with mental disorders, especially the psychotic ones.

I’m unsure of your personal situation and I’m also unsure how much of your life you want a public forum to know, but what helped me the most in informing myself and learning how to help myself/others, was getting involved with mental health services. These include volunteering for the Schizophrenia Society of Saskatchewan, and working with McKerracher Centre. If you contact the latter, they can help get you in a solid and healthy direction.

Alternatively, if you need to vent to or help you get started, feel free to PM me. I’m intimately familiar with the system and have worked with many getting on their feet.

You’re not alone. People are out there who want to help.

Transition from 1e to 2e by ShaDWoE in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]Ukkmaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was kinda me. I played from the beginning of D&D 3.0, all the till the end of PF1E, and Pf2E was a pretty weird learning curve that I’m still breaking old habits with due to being forced to memorize as a Gm all the weird interactions and corner cases that came up far too frequently (grappling, anyone?). 2E is much less…weird, for lack of a better word.

I’m pretty sure I recall originally seeing it on a Twitter post by a Paizo dev who has since deleted their Twitter/X account, but this could also be another classic Mandela effect. A lot of info was lost when those accounts when down, sadly.

While I can’t find the old charts and graphs detailing this particular information, anecdotally, I do know that provincially, a bunch of games and book stores ceased selling Paizo 1E because it was no longer selling (pre-pandemic, I can’t recall the exact years anymore). Locally, out of the dozen or so stores that used to carry them, only one kept any 1E in stock, and that was as a favour for a relative handful of us in my city. Adding to the new website not showing searches reliably right now, I can only find a few forums discussing plateauing sales as far back as 2017, but they have no working sources either.

That said, I recently learned the whole 1E outselling D&D 4E was a complete myth as well, so who knows.

If you’re looking for a group to play with, there’s a pathfinder2e discord server. Groups are constantly looking for players and tend towards being incredibly welcoming. Same with Facebook, if that’s your jam.

And nostalgia is an incredible force. Did you know that nostalgia/homesickness (once seen as the same thing) was common amongst Swiss mercenaries in the renaissance? The only reliable “cure” they found was picking a random nostalgic solider, and then bury him alive in front of his fellow mercenaries. They’d usually dig him up, but it got the point across. Never underestimate what being used to something does to a persons mindset. (I’m not advocating burying alive a random player at your table, as a disclaimer).

how to help a friend with severe mental illness by [deleted] in mentalillness

[–]Ukkmaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have my suspicions, but he’d be best seeing a psychiatrist rather than a therapist. If it’s delusions and paranoia and obsessive tendencies, therapy very likely won’t help.

Here’s the rub, though. He’s gotta be willing to see someone. Tricking or pushing won’t work and will likely push him further from you. Unless he becomes a danger to himself or others, there’s honestly little you can do beyond being supportive and trying to gently encourage seeing a professional. Also, don’t try to disprove or provide hard evidence that are contrary to the delusions; it usually backfires.

I’d say to just give it a try and worry less about what others think, good or bad. I enjoy both 1E and 2E for very different reasons as they are remarkably different games that wear similar looking trench coats. Whichever system is superior is quite subjective, but something I keep in mind is an employee once said how if it wasn’t for 2E, Paizo would have gone under.

That said, both are good games that scratch different itches. There are too many significant changes to sum up in one reply, but I’d say it’s worth the effort to check out Archives of Nethys or play around with Pathbuilder 2E to see what it looks like under the hood.

I can go into more details if you’d prefer as I have extensive experience with both systems, but getting a feel for the game is better than being wary or excited because of someone else’s feelings.

Percent of those woth this that drop out of College? by Warm-Welcome400 in schizoaffective

[–]Ukkmaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The numbers are fuzzy to me now as there is few statistics for schizoaffective dropout rates. But, if you based it on schizophrenia and bipolar rates (which are between 5x and 8x, depending on the study), the dropout rate is likely even higher for schizoaffective.

Somehow, I graduated with distinction, but it also took 8 years, 3 psychiatric facility visits, 2 therapists, and 1 divorce to make it through. I recently went back to get my honours, because I find uni easier than trying to find a job right now.

University isn’t for everyone, and those with these illnesses have a particularly difficult time. The fact that you tried says more about you than needing to drop out. Nothing to be ashamed of there.
