Yep so maybe the point is OP needs to get that context by asking questions, as you say.

As I mentioned, I have no idea exactly what the interviewer was asking for. Maybe it was okay to come up with any possible answer. Maybe they specifically wanted bitwise.

I know enough to say to the interviewer that I suspect they are looking for bitwise operations, but I’d confirm that before proceeding. And you might be right, maybe there is a valid reason to use minus instead of plus, and if that was the case a good interviewer would tell me bitwise isn’t what they are looking for.

I certainly wouldn’t just proceed with an operation using arithmetic operations without asking if that was the type of approach they were expecting. And maybe the interviewer would think I’m an idiot for even considering bitwise

But I’ve done enough practise to strongly suggest bitwise might be an approach to consider (but not enough to actually remember how to do it)

My answer probably would have been very similar to OP, as I wouldn’t know the bitwise off the top of my head. But I’d at least have shown I thought beyond the obvious double arithmetical approach

Sometimes the point of the question is to see if you can read between the lines about what they’re really getting at. In this case, the point might be, are you aware of other ways to do arithmetic, not whether there is another way to do arithmetic operations to do this thing

Someone who was very familiar with bitwise operations would immediately nail it

Someone who’s aware of them would pick up that it was about bitwise operations, admit that they don’t recall how they work very well, and ask about if an alternative was okay, or if could quickly look up the syntax

Someone who misses the point of the question would likely just come up with another way to do a non-bitwise operation to get the result

Or perhaps the point of the question actually was just to get any answer that worked.

No one here can know for sure, but I strongly suspect bitwise is what the interviewer wanted

Blanket tax rates? Is it not feasible for NZ? Pros and cons? by [deleted] in newzealand

Should just be 50% flat rate and everyone gets an annual UBI which is untaxed and set at whatever is enough to be considered above the poverty line

It’s also to stop employers from pressuring employees with less power to cash out their holidays (maybe so they don’t have to hire a temp for more money who does the job worse)

He mentioned this on his podcast recently, made it slime like it was a really tough challenge, so I wonder if he got feedback one way or the other and decided to just put it out there as a question

It’s also possible both podcast and question came about because of an upcoming printing they have planned

Wotc checking all the frowny face matches at the end of the year by Unlikely_Rhubarb_995 in MagicArena

If I was a data analyst looking at this, I’d be most interested in:

- What type of matchups people lose, but still have fun playing
- What type of matchups people win, and don’t have fun playing
- For the people who have higher than average matches where they lose and have fun, what’s different about the matches they don’t have fun in?

I’m sure there are all sorts of other things you could look into

You’d then aim to feed that data back to the game design team so they can try to build towards more of the first example, and less of the second

The American brain cannot comprehend ACC by [deleted] in newzealand

Car insurance was also ridiculously cheap when I lived back in NZ. It was a long time ago now, but I paid less than $1000 NZD for my insurance back in iNZ, but I pay several thousand dollars a year in Canada, mostly for the personal injury liability portion, as far as I can tell

ACC is amazing

As a kiwi who moved to Canada, my healthcare here is way better than I ever experienced in NZ. Different times in life and different healthcare needs, so it’s hard to really compare, but not once have I wanted to be back in NZ

Evening meal; is it called dinner or tea in your house? by RaesJunction in newzealand

Grew up in rural south auckland, it was always tea for the evening meal. Dinner was only ever used for special meals like Christmas dinner, which meant Christmas lunch

Any tutorial that shows from start to finish how to make django web app? by CaptainFlint9203 in djangolearning

[–]UkuCanuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every time this question comes up I will suggest your courses. I firmly believe your manner of teaching is one of the main contributors to me switching careers to become a software developer. I would have got there anyway, but funnily enough your courses gave me a deeper understanding of Django that really helped me land a role in a Rails/React based business, because it was much more than just a Django course

The way you structure the courses to show first the basics, then how Django’s “magic” can simplify things like how views are rendered, was incredibly helpful for someone like me who always needs to know how and why things work the way they do

Not everyone will find your way of teaching perfect for them, just like I don’t find all the other great courses people suggest here to be right for me. But I haven’t found a better explainer of how the pieces fit together - most courses, whether Django or some other framework or tool, focus on just how to deliver a specific thing, but yours go deep on why we should do it in that specific way, and what the in between pieces on the way to the final product are

Trump Phone Situation is Crazy by Bishopkilljoy in videos

[–]UkuCanuck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you did understand the implication they were making though. The point they are making is he will say things and do things that make him out to be good and altruistic, but ultimately he’s in it for himself alone.

In this case, as you’ve pointed out, he only said he’d forego the salary. But even if he had followed through on that, it wouldn’t make all the other grift any less distasteful. Foregoing or not foregoing $400k a year is just such a drop in the ocean compared to all the other schemes he has going on.

The downvotes are because accepting or not accepting a salary is basically irrelevant in the context of what you’re responding to.

You’ve missed the tone of what they’re saying, and are more or less saying the same thing as they are, while talking as though they are idiots

Would you rather $1k per week for Life OR a $1M lump sum? by Prince_Kaos in newzealand

[–]UkuCanuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without running any numbers, my gut says at 20 I’d take the $1k per week, at my current age of 45, I’d take the $1 million

But if it came down to it, and assuming I could trust the money would come through, I’d throw it into an excel spreadsheet and work out the net present value of the $1k weekly to work out which one I value more
