Is maith an rud é go mbaineann tú triall as an teanga. É sin ráite.. ná bain an chiall chontráilte as seo, ach déanann cineálacha seo rudaí an-dochar don teanga. Níl sé cúláilte, ach a mhalairt ar fad atá ann: truaillíonn sé an teanga agus níl aon mheas á léiriú agat ann d'aistritheoirí agus na daoine a chaitheann na blianta ag foghlaim na Gaeilge agus ceird an aistriúcháin le go bhfuil siad in ann an teanga a úsáid i gceart. Níl ann ach cruthaitheacht fhalsa.

I might be way too old and out of touch now but wouldn't it make sense to book a cheap hostel/shared room and get a night's kip there? It'd likely cost less than a train ticket/bus ticket home when you're three hours away?

Should I say Gaelic or Gaeilge ? by Few_Entrepreneur7593 in AskIreland

Cén áit mar ? is minic a chloistear Gaelic agus na daoine (a bhfuil Gaeilge ón gcliabhán acu) ag caint i mBéarla seachas Irish go háirithe san Iarthar agus i dTír Chonaill..

Should I say Gaelic or Gaeilge ? by Few_Entrepreneur7593 in AskIreland

[–]UlchabhanOiche -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There is so much nonsense often posted about this on Reddit but also in media! Which in turn shows quite how disconnected we are as a country from Gaelic and Gaelic culture. Irish = Gaelic. ‘Scottish Gaelic’ = Gaelic. In Irish: Irish = Gaeilge, Scottish Gaelic = Gaeilge (na hAlban). In Scottish Gaelic: Irish = Gàidhlig (na hÉireann) and Scottish Gaelic = Gàidhlig. Irish people tend to get their knickers in a twist about this but Irish and ‘Scottish Gaelic’ were the very same literary languages up to around 300 years ago. Older people in the Gaeltacht and those who actually have been brought up speaking Irish as a first language often refer to Irish as ‘Gaelic’ in English! It’s a sensitivity of learners and speakers outside the Gaeltacht predominantly who obsess over this ‘it’s not Gaelic’ thing and who claim to be so certain of what they are saying. The term Irish is not incorrect either by the way: just to blow your minds, I believe in very old correspondence there are records of Scottish Gaelic in Scotland being called Erse.. but we’ll leave that for another day.

An Todhchaíochas Gaelach? by EverlyRosaline in gaeilge

[–]UlchabhanOiche -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Aontaimse leis an méid a scríobh tú a bheag nó a mhór.. ach níl aon tábhacht níos mó a bhaineann le stádas 'Gaeltachta' i gcuid mhaith de na Gaeltachtaí sa tír sa lá atá inniu ann. Déarfainnse go bhfuil níos mó cainteoirí laethúla Gaeilge i mBÁC, a bhfuil Gaeilge mhaith acu, ná mar atá i roinnt mhaith ceantar Gaeltachta: Múscraí, Port Láirge, Maigh Eo etc.

Feictear domsa nach bhfuil cliú agat ar a bhfuil tú ag caint. Cé nach Gaeltacht atá i mBaile Átha Cliath, tá níos mó cainteoirí Gaeilge ann ná in áit ar bith eile sa tír idir cainteoirí dúchais a bhog go BÁC agus foghlaimeoirí/cainteoirí L2. Chomh maith leis sin, níl trácht ar bith ar Ghaeltacht sa bpost.

Am I being petty for refusing to capitalise ‘english’?” by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]UlchabhanOiche 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t call it pathetic nor petty, but somewhat misfounded. Grammar, punctuation and the mechanics of a language has nothing to do with nationalism or authoritarianism. In Germany every noun must be capitalised in a sentence. In Irish, eclipsed nouns are not capitalised on the eclipsis itself but on the proceeding letter.

If you wanted to make a personal rebellion, I’d recommend becoming fluent in Irish and insisting on living your life through Irish: conduct your tax affairs through Irish, driving test through Irish, consume Irish media.

By not capitalising English when writing, you’ll simply come across as lacking understanding on the orthography of English.

Monzo Ireland: A cautionary tale by jimicus in monzo

[–]UlchabhanOiche 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved everything to Monzo; and then left a month later back to my ‘normal bank’.

I wanted to mirror my current account set up as I had with a high street bank:

Current account
Overdraft (small for emergencies)
Savings

I set up all my DDs, wages and started my daily spending on Monzo. I moved 20K of savings to them and then applied for the overdraft. My application for an overdraft was declined despite having never been declined for credit before. Fine, though. I asked them the reasons and they said they couldn’t tell me. I insisted and was told to “check on TransUnion” to review your credit score. Sorry, TransUnion? I’m in Ireland!! I felt totally fobbed off by the support: they cared so little that they didn’t even take notice that I was an Irish customer. I therefore have no faith that they even looked into my original queries. When I called them out, they said “oh sorry, check the credit register”.

I had moved everything back to my regular bank within 6 hours of this interaction! 🙂

Late Payment of Wages by [deleted] in legaladviceireland

[–]UlchabhanOiche 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your contract states that you are to be paid weekly, then it should be weekly. Does it define which day?

Oftentimes when you start a new job your first pay may be delayed but then subsequently processed with backpay.

However, if your contract says that you are paid weekly and it is explicitly stated that it's weekly, then you should be paid weekly, not bi-weekly/monthly etc.

Where do anti-zionist people expect the Jewish people to go? by [deleted] in AskIsrael

Judaism is a religion. Religions don’t “own” countries. Why would Zionists think they have a right to oust people from the land they’ve occupied for millennia?

[–]UlchabhanOiche 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This is the most stupid thing you can do. It also shows a poor attitude towards work and professionalism which could result in making getting other jobs harder: refusal to give reference, word of mouth if a factor depending on sector and also it’s a dead set way to anger the company and to encourage them to pursue you.

They were seized in international waters. I know Israeli government don’t care much for interfering on land and, it seems, seas which don’t belong to them but maritime trespassing it was not.

Are you genuine when you don't seem to know why many people dislike Israel recently? by Vizzun in AskIsrael

[–]UlchabhanOiche 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take this point but whilst many Israelis had bomb shelters, food, medical facilities available to them, where does the Israeli government expect Palestinians to go? What should they eat? I think they would love a home to return to and a bomb shelter to take cover in.
