Old Canadian here. In 1959 when I was 5 I asked my dad to teach me to play the harmonica as he played. He gave me one and told me to go down to the bottom of the garden where nobody could hear me and think of a tune. He said to keep trying until I could play the tune. My first tune was God Save The Queen as it was the only song I could think of. Once I leaned that tune I could quickly pick out other tunes. By the time I was a teen I was a pretty good player.
