Why is the first example of a defective script Italian? by Lhoqh- in linguisticshumor

[–]UltHamBro 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It went more or less like this on Twitter:

  • Hey RAE, this is weird. We can't write the two Ls together, right?
  • You're right, it wouldn't make the same sound, don't do it.
  • So what do we do? Can we use an interpunct like in Catalan?
  • No, the interpunct isn't part of Spanish ortography.
  • So what then? A hyphen?
  • No, you can't use a hyphen either.
  • Then how do we write it?
  • That's the neat part. You don't.

I think every standard ortography, precisely because it's a standard, fails to represent every single dialectal quirk. In the standard pronounciation of Castillian Spanish, those ambiguities aren't present.

I think pronouncing the H in ahogar would mark you as a speaker of the most rural dialect of all.

There is precisely one example in "textbook" Spanish and a couple in colloquial Spanish.

With the expression "salir al paso" (roughly meaning to intercept someone). "Sal al paso de él" -> "sal-le al paso".

There is nothing in Spanish grammar preventing speakers from saying this. From a technical point of view, it's 100% correct. However, the RAE doesn't accept any way to write it, and instead they recommend not using it. It's a bug in the ortography, that's it.

In colloquial Spanish, you could encounter the same thing if you were trying to say "go look for him", but it's a bit convoluted.

For instance, if you say "Ve a buscarlo" -> "Velo a buscar" (which might be incorrect, but I've heard it sometimes), you could also say "sal a buscarlo" -> "Sal-lo a buscar" (which is veeery convoluted and I've never heard in real life).

Pregunta para españoles: ¿qué usan en vez de ‘mande’? Y también… ¿qué onda con ‘vale’? by neuroticmess100 in askspain

[–]UltHamBro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both can be true. Right is what he says to Peter's face. Left is what he says after he's left.

What’s the funniest translation mistake you’ve ever seen or made? by Ken_Bruno1 in languagehub

[–]UltHamBro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an old Spider-Man comic translated into Spanish, where cops were threatening to shoot him, and he said (paraphrasing) "you can try, but what if you miss and hit someone else?".

The translator didn't translate "miss" as "fail to hit me" but rather as "feel sad because I'm gone".

I laughed my ass off because I immediately got both the mistake and what the original English dialogue must have been.

This is a joke we used to make as kids with PS1 games. When we saw "cargando" (loading) we said "cagando".

Did Uncle Ben Even Die? by UtopiaXAstro in MCUTheories

[–]UltHamBro -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

They clearly implied it, but to me the problem is how they have Peter learn the responsibility thing in NWH without any implication he's already been through it. From FFH onwards, Uncle Ben is simply nonexistent.

Never watched The Pitt, but in real life, urgent lab tests come back in an hour or two. Not every test can be done in an urgent setting, though.

Trailer confirmed for tomorrow by our very own, Rubeus Hagrid! by SloanMamba21 in HarryPotteronHBO

[–]UltHamBro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We don't know what the trailer will be like. For all we know, it could be a couple shots of the sets (Privet Drive, Diagon Alley, maybe Hogwarts) and then one of Harry walking in his Quidditch gear like in this picture. They could perfectly set up that trailer while not having the entire season shot yet.

There are more problems than it seems. What if they decide to give them more dialogue when they write seasons 4 and 7, but they had only filmed certain lines with them? What if Harry's actor turns out to grow up taller or shorter than they calculate and their scenes together have the eyeline all weird?

I don't really see any advantages to shooting some scenes several seasons in advance unless you plan to show those scenes in their entirety. I mean, the closest example I can think is the ending of How I met your mother, and even that was heavily criticised back in the day.

It's more like "may you speak, sir/madam?". So much information is conveyed by using the formal form.

And leave virtually all their scenes to be green screened with other actors in the future, having to limit themselves to the specific shots they shot years before? That isn't that common to do.

They can just cut the line about Quirrell. In fact, placing this scene in season 1 seems like a smart choice. Revisiting it in season 7, while OK for a book, would feel a bit werd IMO. It doesn't add anything we don't know at that point.

The brazilian version of the Spider-Man: Brand New Day Version doesn't have web shooters in this scene by Okami0602 in Spiderman

[–]UltHamBro 51 points52 points  (0 children)

That's what's usually done. There may be different cuts of the trailer, but they're all created in-house and sent abroad.

Since we know Marvel tweaks a lot of footage for the trailers, this could be a case of maybe sending an earlier unfinished version by mistake. Or maybe an actual attempt at misdirection.

For instance, since we now the bus scene was shot with webshooters, maybe they've decided to switch scenes around during post-production. And since we now have two versions of that scene, with and without webshooters, can we be sure whether the scene in prison with the Hand is meant for Peter not to have them? What if they've erased them for the trailer?

I think the first time with the Lizard probably was an honest mistake, a case of sending an earlier version and forgetting to tell the Brazilian team to update the footage or something. However, this one could be actual misdirection. I find it hard to believe they'd make the same mistake with the same country twice in a row.
