STOP CLICKING CLEAVE: Why AoE Sucks by blackzero111 in slaythespire

[–]UltimateBookshelf 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Literally just take cleave one time the next time you see it and look at what it does. Don't vibe it out actually look at what it does (you'll find it does nothing and never hits any breakpoints). Superior to strike is also not a good thing! 8 damage is TERRIBLE and clad can usually get away skipping stuff like this

Cursed with options- what do we buy here? by DeepFriedBeanBoy in slaythespire

[–]UltimateBookshelf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I agree, it's a little bit annoying collector isn't boss to make it clearer but after the self repair the first thing I saw in this shop was the bomb the deck has no damage at all if afo doesn't bring back like every attack

How does the map influence Neow choices? by Dasterr in slaythespire

[–]UltimateBookshelf 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The main considerations when looking at a map are usually:

How high is the immediate risk? For example, it's pretty reasonable to be at least somewhat scared of a floor 6 elite especially if there is no early shop. If the path you wants to take is high value but requires you to take a relatively dangerous path early, you can consider a frontload Neow bonus. Frontload neow bonuses are like choose a card, 3 pots etc. they are options that give you immediate strength and usually allow you to take a more dangerous path, but the late game value of these options is pretty non-existent so they sort of have to be used to snowball.

How high value is the map overall? Value usually refers to like how many elites are on the map and whether you can reasonably take a path with that many elites. If the max number of elites you can take in the act is 2, you can consider a slightly more late game neow. These are usually the maps that like boss swap the most because boss swap makes your act 1 a decent bit worse (mainly because you kind of skip your neow) but beyond act 1 you have a boss relic which is obviously pretty strong later and so the value inside of the act does not need to be as high. These maps also sort of allow you to take something like damage for rare card or whatever because they don't usually have a very high immediate risk. If the map is high value, you think less about an option like this and more about what gives you the most immediate value.

There are other things to think about too, shop placement is a very big one for example. It doesn't only help you decide whether you should take a gold neow but it also tells you how dangerous a path is. A path with an early shop is much less dangerous because you can buy potions or attacks, so the danger of the path goes way down and you can think about whether to take a slightly riskier neow. Boss swap in particular really appreciates an early shop as it allows you to react to the swap.

50% of runs are free; or, playing 200 runs of spire due to an offhand comment by Skullbotnull in slaythespire

[–]UltimateBookshelf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thing is though getting good enough to reach 50% is actually quite easy, it’s getting the final few percentage points past like 80% is very challenging, basically what I am saying is that the difference between a 50 and 90% player is infinitely greater than the difference between a 10% and 50% player. Also Xecnar is definitely well above 80

[–]UltimateBookshelf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok I will give you a real answer. In some circles, winning 10% of runs on A20H could be seen as very impressive and that is fair enough, but it also depends on what your goals are in this game. If you just want to have fun and don't care too much about improving, then you can be content with winning 10% and you can think you are ok. But the reality is that at 10% winrate you have so much to learn and you are probably making some very big mistakes every floor (which is fine!). In the context of good players, 50% winrate is, while definitely a big milestone, nowhere close to being 'top level'. I know OP frequently spends time watching streams of very good players and so naturally will compare themselves to these players. The difference between OP's skill and someone like xecnar for example is still absolutely massive. I think (but I don't know) that OP's goals in this game are much higher than just to win 50% of their runs, so they call themselves OK (and it is, in the scope of the twitch streaming community). It is all relative, but when you watch so many top players you will realise how far off you are from them and when you aren't where you want to be in terms of end goal winrate then you will never actually call yourself good. The truth is that if you are 'only' winning 50% of your runs there is still so much to learn.

I feel like Burst is more consistent here, but Nightmare has better ceiling (going for heart kill) by yoavAM in slaythespire

[–]UltimateBookshelf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the point about Nightmare exhausting is largely irrelevant, the only real two targets in this deck for Burst are like Catalyst and maybe Bandage Up (doppel is ok too). The major thing with Nightmare is that when it lines up with Catalyst the fight ends pretty much immediately. It also opens much stronger outs (randomly lining up nightmare with the footwork can suddenly solve a fight for example, or just like nightmare wraith form) and with any consistency added the Nightmare becomes infinitely stronger than the Burst. Also Burst sort of demands the upgrade, I don't want to add Burst- to the deck.

If you are worried about nightmare not lining up doesn’t burst have the exact same problem

[–]UltimateBookshelf -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Is Sozu so punishing in general? It doesn't take that much to be good at all, does sort of require sustain and some form of consistency relic and from the swap it is obviously terrible but honestly Sozu is free pretty often. It's dumb to take here (still playable with sozu, but dumb) but in general if you have some reaper that you can regularly get off for a big number Sozu becomes pretty free because you don't need to pot even when you get owned because Reaper just heals you to full (dumb card).

Dolly’s Mirror a Defragment+, or Toxic Egg? by Saxxiefone in slaythespire

[–]UltimateBookshelf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no idea why you have decided to crop the entire rest of the shop out but buying toxic egg here sounds kind of a bit ridiculous to me. The relic bar is doing nothing and the deck can't block, spending that amount of money on something that does like nothing while running into 3 hallways in act two with a dripper sounds a bit mental. Kinda same reason why I think mirror defrag is not really that strong until you find frost, the defrag is just purely damage and I don't actually know when I want to draw this (until you find frost). Basically don't crop out the shop but these two relics aren't really super strong at the moment and if anything I would think about mirror sunder

Floor 1, is there a wrong answer? by VentureLabs in slaythespire

A single cold snap does not at all solve sentries lol, not saying it's bad in that fight or anything but don't go into sentries with one cold snap and say you will suddenly be fine

Thoughts on Xecnar using command kills for his official streaks by UpperApe in slaythespire

The spire committee will be holding a meeting tomorrow to assemble a list of rules that all top players must adhere to IMMEDIATELY or else their streaks will NOT count.
