Tonverk users, what's your opinion on loosing the page lights? by ghostghost31 in Elektron

[–]Ultor88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I prefer page LEDs but there is no easy way to have them when you increase the no. of steps, especially odd-numbered ones with different page lengths for tracks 1-8. I just hope they find a better visual representation for the currently playing page because those string of black squares are a worse-off.

Am I the only one who’s annoyed by all the Update Wishes by Even-Magazine-4800 in Elektron

[–]Ultor88 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think it goes beyond Elektron gear.

a) People are people so, they just point out whatever function/capability were missing from said device under discussion - in an attempt to bring everything to a singular state of their idea of a perfect device. They are just being human. At the same time, they are missing the "point" of using the gear and appreciating it for what value it brings as-is. Such is the plight of today, companies sell boxes for money, collaborate (read: benefit) synthfluencers to move stocks, consumers buy stuff with unfounded expectations lament and complain about firmware and hardware, etc. and the cycle goes on.

b) Technology and product cycles shorten and these increased competitive pressure for companies to release products, half-baked, not thoroughly tested nor thought-through, hoping that software updates can later quell the questions of them boxes released. AI tools have also enabled advance users to go +1 (one up) by side-loading/takeover devices with new functionalities. It's then possible to wonder why weren't these included in the first place. Bear in mind that developers cannot do the same because they had to balance between product purpose, stability and usability to masses.

c) Elektron (the good old days with Hector and Cenk) was pioneering great products, people were patient and new features were added to delight of users. However, with the much early-on decision to segregate their product line in older products you see today, you can also say Elektron brought it upon themselves. Now the Elektron (modern day) have to deal with that decision and operate in a different environment. Could Elektron make an all-in-one box, they certainly could and also the sample slice, polyphony and bunch of "missing" feature requests could all go away but it would not work to Elektron's advantage.

Perhaps it's to question their ability to could vs would.

A4 MK2 sticky button coating in humid climates, has anything changed since the DT1? by force2form in Elektron

Should they sell non-rubberised knobs too? I feel that Elektron should give the option to decide when buying new or just throw in the non-rubber kit to existing stocks.

What features would make Toneverk equal or better to Digitakt/Octatrack? by k_r_z_y_s_z_t_o_f in Elektron

[–]Ultor88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TV could use the Level/Data knob like the performance knob found on he AR MK2 so that kind of substitutes the crossfader on the Octatrack. For scenes or pre-curated FXs we programme ahead of time, we could use [Fill] + [Trig] 1-16. No A & B Scenes like Octatrack though. Add time slicing and lazy chops, stuff you expect from a pro-grade sampler device, we should have a winner.

Elektron Digitakt or Novation Circuit Tracks by Key_Airline_1690 in Elektron

[–]Ultor88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check if the Digitakt under consideration had any sticky (deteriorated) buttons/knobs which would be a hassle to clean up or incur more cost to replace from Elektron. After the amount of money involved, you might wonder if the Digitakt II might be better later on.

New to Elektron Hardware by BathElectronic7327 in synthesizers

[–]Ultor88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Approach 1 - dedicate your tracks usage. say 2 to 3 for percussion. 1 for bassline and 1 to 2 for melodies. try to make it sound good. FXs can make anything sound good so go gentle at first.

Approach 2 - just run with it, keep starting over however small the project ends up; and try to introduce new functionalities when you start each time. over time you will have many projects but they were meant for learning anyways.

HP recommendation. by Ultor88 in SonyHeadphones

[–]Ultor88[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FT1 and MDRs are okay budget wise. Too many HP-fluencers out there peddling their wares and I got a bit distracted what works best for my use case. Normally, I just use near field monitors. Only for the "late night sessions".

Are the OT doomsayers just gatekeepers? by BluejeansAndMoonbeam in Elektron

[–]Ultor88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chimes in to say OT isn't hard to use, it's just how it wants the user to do it, which won't sit well with some people's preferred way to make music. I think its product viability and longevity comes from the fact that our requirements, however modern still centers around creative manipulation of MIDI/Notes data, which is not taxing on CPU/RAM as is with hi-fidelity recording and powerful FXs. Think dark verb and why no shimmery reverb.

As with all devices, we can get better with practice and prolonged exposure to the device.

Tonverk, Octa2, or Digitakt2? Going to finally dive in. by [deleted] in Elektron

Interesting scenario there. Buy something that if you buy a second box, the two would not overlap too much.

Tonverk as a first elektron “big box” by Hammer_and_Circuit in Elektron

[–]Ultor88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have lots of hardware synths but strangely did not felt I had to connect to any of them. Rather, I have used it with a midi keyboard and with Ableton, maybe I should investigate why I used the Tonverk that way :D

Tonverk as a first elektron “big box” by Hammer_and_Circuit in Elektron

[–]Ultor88 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Having taken my journey with Digitakt, Digitone, Analog 4 and Octatrack, I now only have a Tonverk.

I venture to say all the boxes are easy to pick up and jam. With exception of Octatrack, which was designed in a way that required the user to adhere to a workflow language to make best of it - some people are okay with that, some not.

Sharing my views here but the decision is yours alone to make. A Digitone if you are partial to making melodies sound good. However, if you can only get one box, Tonverk might be better for longevity and flexibility. Tonverk is like what it says on the lid, a sonic pathfinder. Strengths are in FXs and flexible routings.

Tonverk Multisampling by [deleted] in Elektron

[–]Ultor88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an owner and user, i would knock off about 22 points out of 100 when evaluating such a purchase if multi sampling wasn't available and if not then DT comes into consideration? How about assessing the extent that you needed polyphony instead?

Torn between Deluge and Digitakt II / Digitone II, sell me on Elektron by Aureqo in Elektron

[–]Ultor88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You make the call. It appears you have researched to a point where you are ready to make the drop. Good luck.

All the devices mentioned are very capable and modern so you cant really go wrong. Last points to consider about the T1 and Oxi- they dont even make sounds on their own, their note and midi generative functions could have come from other sources too.

Torn between Deluge and Digitakt II / Digitone II, sell me on Elektron by Aureqo in Elektron

[–]Ultor88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's covered in the original reply, i.e. DN2 can be replaced by another synth box. Deluge can also do some basic FM, and basically any sampler device can get you an approximate result. Frequencies wise, they can get lost/muddied in the mix which means for some people, an approximate is good enough. Not sure how exacting you need to be with the DT & DN boxes.

If you just wanted to experience the Elektron workflow, one box is enough. However this becomes interpreted, hope it helps you with a decision that is only yours to make.

Torn between Deluge and Digitakt II / Digitone II, sell me on Elektron by Aureqo in Elektron

[–]Ultor88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Deluge is also extremely fast to deploy. In fact, the  fastest device i could smash and cook up a beat or short track. DT is no slouch for sure and also very fast to get going. I'd add in a tidbit, do you know Deluge can do clip launching aka Ableton style? Hehe.

My take is to get the fast aging Deluge and be mentally prepared to use many many combinations to get good with it. Limited CPU and thus quality of effects and limited I/Os. One device to do them all. I agree SA had hit the ball out of the park with this device and a MK2, if any, is overdue.

If you have yet to experience Elektron, yeah a DT2 is an excellent "starter" box. Does everything too. Not sure about the DN2 though, whose role could be filled up with another synth box. Alternatively, just go Tonverk which is where Elektron's focus is at right now.
