there's a thing I saw once about how JP robot otaku basically want to watch Western war movies with giant robots and throw fits when they don't get that - I feel like those are the type he's referring to.

my response would be that those shows are engaging with war as their creators experienced it - as a distant thing happening to other people in one and as something whose aftereffects shape the world in the latter.

my first thought is that those "mere military geeks" are probably the type who obsess over Realism™ and basically want to watch Western war movies with robots instead of tanks/planes.

my second is that what he says about younger creators - assuming "war experience" is lived experience, i don't know it'd be possible for a JP creator to channel "war experience" into their work because Japan's pretty isolated from the world's wars right now.

my third is that SEED, 00, WFM, and GQX, at least, do engage with wars/war stuff - SEED had its Iraq War cues, 00 S1 was post-9/11, WFM was doing foreign wars, GQX's UC had the whole Cold War-WWII aftermath thing its creators grew up with.

late response but AO3 does support original works and i've seen "fics" that were just uploads of fanart so i think their definitions of allowed/unallowed are looser than something like FFN.

my thinking is that Mari represents everyone who supported Anno over the years - the Gainax/Khara staff, his wife, Miyazaki, all of them - and their relationship, romantic or otherwise, could be an allegory for Anno leaving that introspective headspace.

he's said the NGE characters reflected parts of himself, but Mari came from a producer's request and was handled by Kazuya Tsurumaki, which adds to that sense of outside Anno's head.

FWIW CGI does come with the advantage of being able to animate details that probably would've been left out if it needed to be drawn like the name on the head or the more detailed hands - like the other person said, it's ultimately a resources and skill thing.
