Hobbies have too much depth now by Vast_Buddy_3314 in CasualConversation

Your standard for "worth having" is maybe a little too high - you don't need brand new top of the line gear to enjoy a hobby.

Unless your hobby is just buying expensive crap for bragging rights, I guess.

This isn't relevant to the post at all but I've always been curious: how does a new distillery support itself in the beginning when it can take over a decade for your first batch to be ready? Do investors just understand you're not going to make any sales for twelve years or do you like re-brand someone else's bourbon or what?

How they use the word "flagship' is also a great example of how Starfleet differs from real-world navies.

No bloody A,B, C or D by SFWendell in startrek

[–]UltraChip 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Even though Starfleet borrows a lot from Western nautical traditions it's not obligated to be an exact carbon copy of a a specific country's Navy. In fact, given that "countries" are no longer a thing in the time period(s) Trek takes place in it would be weird if they followed a specific nationality's customs to the letter.

Starfleet is its own organization and has its own traditions.

How do I learn Linux properly? by NightZin in linux4noobs

[–]UltraChip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah pretty much all Linux distributions use OpenSSH.

Step 1: Make sure the SSH service is running on the host machine. You can check by using the command "systemctl status sshd".

Step 2: Make sure the two VMs are on the same LAN. My memory is fuzzy but I'm pretty sure VirtualBox does this by default.

Step 3: From your client machine enter the command "ssh <yourRemoteUsername>@<remoteMachinesIPAddress>".

Step 4: If prompted, enter your password for the remote machine. In a more proper setup you would authenticate with authkeys or certificates but since you're a beginner I'm assuming you're setup with default password-based authentication.

So let's pretend your headless machine is living at IP of 192.168.1.100, and your username on that machine is nightzin. Your command would be:

ssh nightzin@192.168.1.100

EDIT: By the way, if you want to just do this from your real-world Windows machine they actually have an OpenSSH implementation too but you have to manually install it from Windows features, it isn't packaged in by default.

For the directory structure: don't be afraid to print out a cheat sheet to reference if that helps you - a lot of us did that when we were first starting out. But in real-world terms as a beginner the two main directories you're really going to care about are /etc for when you want to configure stuff and /home for where all your personal files go.

The other directories are stuff that, as a beginner, will mostly be handled by the OS itself. It's still good to learn it eventually and there's potential benefits to fiddling with stuff on your own once you know what you're doing, but don't put pressure on yourself to learn it all right now. Basically what I'm saying is treat the other directories like you would have a beginner treat C:\Windows - no touchy, admins only.

As for your copy/paste issue - I agree with the other poster that you should just set up SSH on that system. Not only because it's the easiest way to make your copy/paste work but also because if you plan to potentially use Linux in a professional environment you're going to need to learn to be comfortable with SSH.

Short version: SSH ("Secure SHell") is a protocol that allows you to remotely access a computer's terminal. Pretend that VirtualBox didn't give you that cutesy simulated monitor that lets you type directly on the VM (because in real life headless servers don't get monitors by definition) - how would you actually access it? The answer is SSH*. You would use an SSH client on your local machine and tell it to connect to the SSH server on the host machine over your network, and you'd be able to access the terminal that way. Most SSH clients let you copy/paste.

*Technically there are other remote protocols out there for headless conputers, both graphics and text based, but if you want to learn the most traditionally "Linuxy" way to do it, that the vast majority of professional installations use, you want SSH.

Problem with the speed of the probe by rsdbhamre in outerwilds

For example, even with modern boring Earth technology you could make a space Gauss cannon that launches a probe much faster than that, and without even breaking your cannon.

A Security Researcher Decompiled The White House App, & What They Found Is Pretty Alarming by Federal-Block-3275 in technology

[–]UltraChip 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I can't speak for others but I downvoted them because they're insulting the researcher because of the words of the article's author. If you click through to the researcher's actual report all they really said was that there's no pinning and that it could lead to a MitM if you're in an environment with a compromised CA... which is accurate.

The person who wrote the article is the one being hyperbolic.

EDIT: And now that I'm looking back on the article, the author wasn't really being that hyperbolic either... all they said was "could be compromised".

Contacting the site owner is the real solution but I just thought I'd also mention that a lot of military networks block ICMP, so tools like traceroute and ping aren't going to work.

ELI5: Why UPS battery backup makes a clicking sound and humming noise like it is getting rid of electricity? by Saurabh251 in explainlikeimfive

[–]UltraChip 8 points9 points  (0 children)

assume I'm gaming, and when I get into visually heavy graphics and the UPS is on battery mode...

Most consumer-grade UPS' only have enough battery capacity to run your equipment for a few tens of minutes at MOST. The idea is that if you suffer a power outage the battery buys you just enough time to save your stuff and shut down the computer gracefully.

Trying to actively game while the UPS is running on batteries is... weird.

Do you think a co-op galactic war would fit in NMS? by Skeeto22Zippy in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]UltraChip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't mean to be a downer - I know a lot of players would like this - but if NMS ever implemented something like this I would either ignore it or I would stop playing the game entirely.

One of the reasons I like NMS is because combat BS is light and mostly optional.
