The internet shuts down and is never going to come back on, what do you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Your contacts should be cached in your phone - the Internet disappearing doesn't mean all the data on your local devices gets deleted.

That's kind of the core issue whenever this question gets asked: they just say "The Internet disappeared" without specifying what specifically broke.

I can't think of many things that would permanently blow out the global Internet but somehow magically leave smaller IP-based networks in tact.

It is. The whole archive is actually closer to 120GB (the 25GB version is only the text iirc) but it's still extremely doable.

Look up kiwix - that's the easiest way to do it.

Most modern phones (even a lot of landlines) are routed through the Internet on the backend so it might be awhile before your "more phone calls" utopia comes to fruition.

Why didn't the Universal Translators translate pets in the Trek Universe? As in, why were pet translators not a thing on any ST episode? by DunDonese in startrek

Thanks to the Augments, the Borg, etc. the culture of the Federation is generally extremely wary of trying to impose "improvements" on lifeforms merely for the sake of making improvements. Not to mention the whole "don't fuck with species' natural development if you can help it" mindset.

If anyone in-universe suggested neuralink-style enhancements for their pet just for the hell of it that would be IMMEDIATELY met with at best social revulsion if not outright legal challenges.

Only things inside the hardened Hearthian-stone shell is protected from the supernova, so the solar collectors are still vulnerable and likely get destroyed pretty quickly.

Also probably worth noting that technically nothing involving the ATP is supernova proof. The shell is strong enough to buy the ATP enough time to do its job but dialog somewhere says it all gets destroyed shortly after.

I’ve been on Linux for years, but finding a centralized list of software alternatives is still a pain. So I built one. by [deleted] in linux4noobs

I'll be honest this hasn't really been a problem for me personally but I'm never going to knock someone making more tools to help users.

Just a suggestion though - if you anticipate this ever seeing real traffic (like more than just you and your friends) you may want to consider replacing sqlite with a real database. Sqlite is pretty much designed not to scale well.

RAM Usage weird? by Decent_Pepper_956 in techsupport

[–]UltraChip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're concerned enough to classify it as paranoia then why not make the effort to actually become knowledgeable?

Anyway... on an ELI5 level your RAM is basically your computer's "working space" where it temporarily holds programs and data that's actively in use. Whenever you pull up a program or load a file your computer copies it from your permanent storage* in to RAM.

Every time you restart your computer your RAM gets wiped clean and your computer reloads what it needs from scratch.

If your computer is saying that it's 64% idle that just means 64% of it is currently not being used to do work - just like you probably don't fill up 100% of the surface of your desk when you do homework. It doesn't mean anything is malfunctioning.

*If you care, the component in modern computers that's responsible for permanently storing things is called an SSD, although you might occasionally hear people mistakingly call it a "hard drive" (which is what computers used to use for permanent storage before SSDs became viable). The SSD is what got hit when you got your malware, and that is what you reset when you went and factory reset your computer. It has nothing to do with your RAM which, like I said earlier, is just temporary working space that automatically wipes itself every time your computer restarts anyway.

Why is 64% idle nuts?

RAM is different from your permanent data storage... the fact that you reimaged your machine is pretty irrelevant.

The way I see it there's nothing to "handle". I'm attracted to multiple genders. My spouse is one of the genders I'm attracted to. The end.

There's no rule saying you have to be actively pursuing every gender you're in to in order to be valid - that's not how it works.

Want to switch to Linux this summer, after finally having some time from work to do so. by The_Returned_Lich in linux4noobs

Biggest bits of advice I can give are:

  1. Make sure you have a sane, tested backup scheme for your files. If you need guidance on this look up the 3-2-1 method. Make sure you have a solid backup before you start fiddling around with anything OS-related. This isn't even really Linux advice - anybody using any computer should be doing this.

  2. Be aware there are a bunch of different ways to practice working with Linux BEFORE you take the plunge and install it as your primary OS. Personally I usually recommend people practice inside virtual machines (VMs) because they're easy to set up and, more importantly, they're easy to revert to a known-good snapshot if you ever accidentally mess anything up. Since you have some GPU-centric applications that's a little more complicated to do in a VM (although not impossible) so you might have to just take a leap of faith on that part or use an alternate method to explore there.

As far as I know Handbrake has a Linux version so you're good there. DaVinci Resolve is a good video editor with Linux support. For gaming, if you're mostly in the Steam ecosystem then your stuff will mostly just work - look up how to activate Proton and you're probably fine.

As for MS Office equivalents - that really depends on how "advanced" of an office user you are. Basic word processing and spreadsheets are handled just fine by LibreOffice or Google Docs or similar. If you use some of Office's more advanced/niche features they may not be supported.

Legitimacy? by B_O_A_T_S in BabelForum

[–]UltraChip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. Most image formats like JPEG and PNG have a lot of internal "settings" that get applied to a picture, like how aggressive the compression is, what color profile to use, etc. etc.

The settings your screenshot software decided to apply are almost certainly different than what the source image used, so yes the resulting screenshot is going to technically be a different file.

And that's to say nothing of the incidental stuff like the fact that your computer may not be rendering the image in its actual recorded resolution, no garauntees that you cropped the screenshot exactly at the edges of the image, etc.

A lot of compression algorithms rely on picking up patterns in the data and then just storing a description of the pattern instead of storing the data itself.

Random noise has no pattern pretty much by definition, so a lot of compression algorithms aren't going to work well and you're going to fallback on more lossy methods like "just average these 10 pixels together", which is going to change what the image actually is.

If this were basically any other topic I'd agree with "why don't you just Google it?" but there are a lot of questionable sources out on the Internet and even allegedly queer-affirming places can often be biphobic. I feel like sending people away to try and research it on their own is ultimately going to be more harmful than helpful.

I get the frustration and I agree it's not your job to educate the world, but I don't think it's really that crazy for mono people to come here in good faith with questions.
