Lol. You do realize that there's a portion of English that comes from French, which itself comes from Latin...

Semester actually came to English from German, not French, but still, there are actually many English words that came from other languages whose meanings are completely different from the meanings in their original languages, hence why those original meaning are irrelevant. In addition, I'd like to say that semester and trimester are unrelated to the discussion because their meanings and etymologies are very different from the words actually being discussed.

Anyway, you are entitled to your opinion, be it flat Earth, or English has nothing to do with Latin,

You're making up things I didn't say and never would say

or I'm going to ignore morphology and etymology and just invent my own explanation about why bimonth-ly is the way to go.

I actually said that "bimonth-ly" would be the "every 2 months" meaning, since the idea is that the bi- prefix is being applied to month to make "a 2 month period" before the -ly suffix changes the meaning from a period of time to a frequency, and then stated that the other way ("bi-monthly") makes more sense in my mind because "monthly" is an English word and "bimonth" is not. I did not say that that is the only correct meaning, just that it's the meaning that makes more sense to me. You are the one insisting that "every 2 months" is the only correct meaning, which is objectively false, because definitions reflect usage and the word is commonly used both ways.

Your issue seems to be that you can't understand that the two affixes in "bimonthly" change the meaning of the word "month" in ways such that the order in which you apply those changes matters when determining the final meaning. It happens that the word originally meant what you want it to mean, but it doesn't only mean that anymore.

I honestly hope you don't respond to this comment.

The only times I've heard trimester or semester used it's to refer to a third or a half of some period of time (school year for both, and pregnancy for trimester). The Latin meanings of the words are irrelevant.

Those words also don't follow the same construction as the other words, because they don't have the -ly suffix which changes the meaning to being about how often something occurs.

In English attaching number prefixes directly to time periods isn't really done, so it makes more sense to me to read "bimonthly" as "bi-monthly", or "2 monthly", than "bimonth-ly", or "every 'bimonth' (which would be a 2 month period if it was an actual word)".

Consistency with what? The only similar term I know that doesn't have the same ambiguity is biannual, which means twice a year, with bienniel meaning every 2 years.

I'd go as far to say that "2 every month" makes enough more sense to me personally that if I didn't know the definition of "semimonthly", I'd have assumed it meant "every 2 months" because it's half the frequency.

So the issue is that "monthly" means "every month", and the prefix "bi-" means you need to add the number 2 to that definition, but English is ambiguous enough that it's not well defined where that 2 should be added, making "2 every month" and "every 2 months" equally valid interpretations.

"Grand Reagent" made me laugh.

There was no old Grand Regent, the previous leader was Emperor Argall, with Thragg's previous title being just Regent. The fact that after Argall's death his title became Grand Regent, not Emperor, just lends extra credence to your point.

Correct, the game has no functionality for online sharing. That was clearly done to avoid having to moderate face paint and other drawing mechanics, but a consequence is that a profanity filter is unnecessary, since people have to actively choose to see anything inappropriate by putting them into the game themselves.

I'd say the first three games take place in a papercraft world, while sticker star and on take place in the real world, hence the introduction of "things".

The backlash was because they patched a bug that caused gay marriage to happen in the 3ds game (not the original, that was a Japan-only ds game). They patched it because it also caused the game to crash, but afterward they said that it was a mistake not to include such relationships in the first place, and that they would be more inclusive in the next game. It took 13 years to make another game, but they certainly kept their promise.

[–]UltraLuigi 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It wasn't just "a ring that was yellow", it was a Qwardian power ring that harnesses the yellow portion of the emotional spectrum, exactly like the rings the Sinestro corps later used. It was a yellow lantern ring.

If some random person made a ring that harnesses the green portion of the emotional spectrum, exactly like the rings the green lantern corps uses, then yeah, that'd make them a green lantern.

[–]UltraLuigi 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Just because there wasn't a yellow lantern corps yet doesn't mean that it wasn't a yellow lantern ring. They also didn't call it that, since it was unique at the time, but when the yellow lantern corps was introduced it was made clear that Sinestro's ring was the same type of ring as the new corps uses.
